Is the World Real or Just an Illusion?

  • Is the world real, or is it just an Illusion? This talk addresses a common misconception about the nature of reality: Many classic Advaita texts say that the world is an illusion, but does that mean that it is not real?
Rupert says that the only reason we have problems with this is that in our culture, we believe that reality means physical things. The question is not whether the world is real or not. It is absolutely real. The war in Ukraine is real. The Caribbean beach we dream of is real. The suffering we feel is real. The question is, what is its reality? What does that question mean? It means not how does it appear to be - it means what is it really, in spite of the way it appears?
Yes, the world is an illusion - that is, it is not what it appears to be. But all illusions have a reality to them, and that reality is absolutely real. Moreover, there is nothing to an illusion other than its reality. All there is to the world is infinite being.
As the Sufis say: Wherever you look, there is only the face of God.

One day, my friend offered to take shrooms and I decided to join in. During the trip, I had a realization about my understanding of nonduality. I pointed at the buildings across the canal and said to my friend, "Isn't it incredible that everything we see isn't even real?" This was a riddle I often used to reflect on nonduality. However, as I said it, I realized that I didn't actually believe or experience what I was saying. My friend responded cautiously, "Well, everything we see is real." This made me realize that my philosophy was not in alignment with my awakening experience. I began to view the concept of nonduality differently. I came to understand that there is a distinction between what we call the "world" and what we call the Earth. The "world" can be thought of as an illusion, a projection of our perception. However, by adjusting our perception to reality, we can see the real world. On the other hand, the Earth can be seen as a conscious being, similar to ourselves. Its physical manifestation can be thought of as the crystallization of consciousness. I hope this perspective helps.

What Rupert says if of course true. The world is real but not physically so. The fact that cannot be disputed is no one has ever experienced physical things directly. All we have ever known and can can ever experience is our own consciousness.
Having said that, we cannot force ourselves to experience the world as if in a dream which is how real sages experience the world. To them the waking world is no different from a dream, only longer. Its not just a concept or an idea, but really experienced as such.
This transition will only happen when the ego is totally dissolved. When the ego is destroyed, whatever it has constructed will be destroyed too. Chief among these is the belief in the physical reality of the world.

what I am getting of this is that my being, even my "bad" habits such as watching youtube videos, while my mind says I should concentrate on meditation etc. is happening very naturally, and is my "being", that is my way of being naturally, without trying to do anything other than what just happens. I have often wanted to get away from this natural thing, to do something more productive for my spiritual growth. But as the world is just infitie being, infinite me doing what I feel like in the moment, if I just go with that flow, and yield to what is OBVIOUSLY happening by itself, that being of myself, will shine through and by living it, it can be used to find true reality and peace.

I define water-moon as the image of the moon we see on water.
Rabbit-horn is the image of a rabbit with a horn or a horn came from a rabbit.
    Are these real?
Both are appearance in mind - if you like you can say appearances in consciousness.
Water-moon is a reflection of a real thing but NOT the real thing.
Rabbit-horn is a pure imagination but an image based on two real things (rabbit and horn).
    In summary
Things always appear in consciousness (or with the consciousness) but what appears is only a representation and sometimes what appears is pure imagination based on what mind got exposed to before.

There will be less problems and confusions,if the one presenting his or her own model of Reality, presents it in a consistent manner with what he or she firmly believes in. Many models of Reality out there. Rupert's Consciousness only model of Reality is the one that is solely based on being aware of being aware. In other words, it's based on Self Consciousness or Self Awareness. Chances are ,no model of Reality is perfect, and this model of Reality probably could render more service to humanity, if presented with less Self deceptions, distortions and diversions. If Rupert truly believes that it is Consciousness alone which assumes all activities, then, say it like it is. Be it praises or blames. Exporting all praises to Consciousness and leaving all blames to finite minds, beliefs in separation, cultures...etc, as if these activities are independent of Consciousness. That's the mistake many religious mystics, and fanatics have made, which has brought havoc and great damages to humanity as a result. God is all good, all loving, therefore, God has nothing to do with all the pains and sufferings that falls on all life forms endlessly. With these forms of Self deceptions, Consciousness begins to look for something other than itself to put place all blames on, follwed by religious wars, burning people at stakes, tortures,judgements...etc, all because something else other than God had to be responsible, so comes the concept of sin and sinners, follwed by every imaginable atrocities. Now, we hear, Consciousness is all peace and happiness, therefore, it couldn't possibly be the one causing the pains and sufferings of all life forms endlessly, it has to be something else like, finite minds, separate self,or the belief in separate Self, if not, it has to be the cultures that is responsible. All these activities of endless sufferings of all life forms, couldn't possibly be done by Consciousness alone, could it?. God or Consciousness, Same ideology sold under different labels. Nothing more than forms of Self deceptions and all sufferings are no coincidence. In one talk, Rupert claims that everything that is ever known is known by Consciousness alone. In another talk, he would claim, finite minds also know, and what finite minds know, Consciousness doesn't know, and what Consciousness knows, finite mind doesn't know. Rupert used a book metaphor once, to illustrate his beliefs about Reality. The metaphor says, all the pages, all the chapters and all stories are already all there, but, a finite mind can only read one page at a time. In other words, Rupert believes everything is already predetermined. He no longer uses the metaphor. If he does, it would most likely not only drive away the audience, but, also would defeat the purpose of his talks. Watching an animal documentary, I saw a mother warthog and her piglets being dragged out of their hiding place, and were literally being eaten alive by a group of lions while screaming from the top of their lungs to no avail. Walking up to them to preach happiness would be not only huge ignorance and Self deceiving but, only adding insults to their sufferings. Countless life forms are screaming somewhere even at this moment which is more of the reason why, we can never be too careful, when it ceocerns the Absolute True Nature of ourselves, not just for our own sakes, but also for the sakes of all life forms and beyond.

@@balasubramanian4975 yes of course it's all part of life. I fully agree. My point is this. If a man puts on a costume and goes out, commits massacres and unspeakable atrocities , turns around and always blames the costume but, never himself, then, this man is truly sick. He needs to investigate his own psyche instead of deceiving himself. If Consciousness, Consciousness alone assumes all activities of all life forms, turns around and always blames the costumes and never itself, then, Consciousness is sick, deceiving itself. It's A wrong understanding of Reality and Existence. Just as the man needs to investigate his own psyche, Consciousness has to investigate its own psyche of all the itches, urges, and the impulses as to why. Blaming the costume but never itself amounts to Self deception. The man always blaming the costume but never himself is really a sick man, if anything qualifies for madness and insanity, this one does. All praises goes God and Consciousness but, all the atrocities, genocides, the bad and the ugly goes to something else like finite minds, belief in separate self if not, it's the cultures...etc. That is not only Self deceiving but, are real madness and insanity.

@@joajoajb I agree! The finite mind has the flaws. The work should be upon the mind. There is no denying it.
Since the finite mind assumes the role of a doer by default, everything has to be done on its account to not violate the principles of life.
On the othee hand, the doer of good and bad, the finite mind where has it sprouted from? why is it always uncontrolled in the mode of action and restlessness, the source of all problems?
When we investigate the underlying consciousness is revealed.
The consciousness, the essential 'us' has no motives, choiceless is all by itself. It has nothing to do with anything.
The persona identified mind cannot perceive Consciousness. Mind is identified with many many concepts about onself and the world. The state of consciouness is undivided and whole!
Consciousness is revealed once all the concepts and ideas about oneself, the mind work is dropped. When you can directly be as you are, it is.
The conditioned mind cannot blame the choiceless being state of consciousness for its actions. The mind has to enquire about its behaviour, wrong doings and rectify them. Why does not it value the peace, wholeness and everything ? If it values it will subside to reveal the 'all peaceful' state of consciousness.

@@balasubramanian4975 By talking about finite mind, you're imparting Reality to finite mind as if it is independent of Consciousness. What Rupert believes is that there really is no finite mind with its existence apart from Consciousness. In other words, there is no finite mind anywhere doing anything, Rupert believes, finite minds are activities of none other than Consciousness and Consciousness alone. So, in this model of Reality, Investigating anything other than Consciousness is madness, since all activities are activities of Consciousness and Consciousness alone. There is no room for anything other than Consciousness, that can act or behave on its own. That's the Consciousness only model that he believes in. So introducing anything or anyone other than Consciousness is already a form of Self deception.

Maybe it's enough to say it's happening, and then to look for what you're responsible for in regards to perception. What part do you play in the interpretation of the appearance of a world?

All views are shaped, a lens imposes certain boundaries, it focuses and limits attention, so seen through a particular lens, or context, the effect of looking through one, which while we do is imagined to be singular or private, and through which images of objects exist seemingly separate from the viewer, a condition imposed by the lens, we describe what appears as a world, “out there”. I'm concerned with my part in accepting the influence of a particular lens, or any influenced view. One universal consciousness? Maybe mind is simply a shared field, and not billions of discreet platforms. In mind, there is that which attempts to influence mind. I say that because I see its reflection in the action of all that has access to it. The attempt to influence “in the world” is constant. Everyone does it, as if it's familiar to everyone, but rather than do what's being done in mind by repeating the action of it in “the world”, an imaginary outward arc of perception that sees an “external world”, I'd rather take responsibility for the influence I accept in mind. I think there's an influence in mind that isn't kind, and one that is. I accept responsibility for learning which is shaping the lens through which I look.

Whatever you create in your mind you create in your life. But the reality is when you put it into action, so others know what you’re capable of doing by action. We are like the battery 🔋 🪫. We go down and down and down and those "real things" aren't "real" anyway, because they're not even "really" there. So what we mean is, our experience of "reality" is "real". And because "reality" isn't really there anyway, what we actually mean is our "experience"! So our experience is real. Reality is our experience.

And when we realise what we think we know is not really a known at all, or it's only a known in comparison with another known, then we know there are no knowns and everything is open to interpretation.
