- This is a short mini-film that takes a deeper look into the biggest day of my short ultrarunning career to date - the WESTERN STATES 100 mile ENDURANCE RACE. It is the original! It's the most prestigious and most renowned 100 mile race in the world. The field is stacked with the world's best ultrarunners. I had only just left the Army a few weeks prior to the race. So it was always going to be either an unbelievable success or an epic fail.
I knew I always wanted to challenge myself over 100 miles...I just never expected it to be in this incredible race. I was privileged to have qualified to race so to have a Race Crew and Filming Crew follow my journey over the race to an unexpected end was amazing.
This one definitely hurts you. At 90 miles, I was seriously pushing through some pain to get the result I felt I could get as the race unfolded.
It was incredible. The preparation. The event. The course. The journey. The process. The outcome.
I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for all the support so far... I've got so much still to achieve. Watch this space...
Tom - Sport
I think there are some copyright issues with the music, there's no sound for half of the video.
I'm experiencing the same issue...every now and then the sound is cutting out :/
Same. Painful
Glad it is not just me
As an ultra runner and content creator I enjoyed this very much, great story and very well done. Congrats on that 3rd place and even more on that sub 15, amazing. Even though you served another country, we here in the states thank you for your service in protecting freedom..
Well done for flying the flag for the UK at the elite level, Tom. Personally, I'm a fat (218lb) 49 year old man training for my first 100 mile (flat) race in 2021. All the best.
I hope you are doing well on your journey David.
and now watching this as Tom Evans wins the 2023 WSER 🤩
Fast forward to 2023 and Tom becomes one of the fastest ever at Western States. Incredible to see at the same time we have Tom, Jim W and Zach all peaking. It's hard not to believe every meaningful record will be broken in the next few years
Tom Evans, ex British Army Captain and current British Trail Savage. That was a fantastic video insight, and what an ending to come in under 15 hours. Mind is fully blown.
Brilliant video, great editing, music and production and of course great athlete! Really makes me dream of running a ultra.
A true inspiration, makes me want to go outside and not come back for days!! #stayhome
Thanks for this incredible inside look on the process, Tom...
Gave me chills! Massive kudos!
From CANADA!
The shadows of those strides on the track at the very end are amazing
Tom I remember you seeing that determined racing during the WTC. I def. knew a new rising star was there...I wasn't wrong. Wish you all the best in the Terrex team
Amazing, Tom. You have a massive future ahead of you. Go get it.
This is an excellent insight into a true warrior on the trails!

Great video Tom!! A real inspiration
scott kelly thanks Scott!!
Brilliant.....👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻....x
From a novice to an elite endurance athlete. what an amazing story.
Epic!! Would be cool if you gave a breakdown of the gear you used for new or aspiring ultra runners.
I don't know if I will ever run 100miles (max is 100km 😅 doing Oxfam trailwalker) but your journey in just a short time, is admirable. You run the perfect race.
Excellent race. What were those handheld bottle holders you were using, and what belt?
Really inspirational
Total inspiration Tom as always dude
EML Recordings thanks very much!! Lots more to come in the coming months 👍
Very well done video
Fair play Tom , from the time you joined the battalion it was obvious you were going places
RESPECT!!!! 😘
Fantastic achievement
...INCREDIBLE! I now have a dream to do what you've done. How did you get to where your at so quickly?
Probably years of running as a 'hobby' and two years running as a pro which is plenty enough given one has the proper genetics. He clearly has some :)
Amazing! Congrats man
Miguel Leça thanks very much 🙏
Need to sort the edit out guys - entire chunks of sound and music missing.
Amazing effort. Massive massive congrats. So inspiring.
( Not bad for an ex pongo!!! ) Haha.
Loved watching this, such an inspiration! *Salute*
Which water bottles and belt do you use to carry your gels??
Del Dunworth I used a whole range of bottles for this race. I love the naked band - it’s the most stable!
@@tomevansultra What were they applying to your legs at the aid stations? I MUST get some of that...
This is amazing! What watches do you recommend?
Times command LT, it not only gives you the time but the date as well! Great when you fall asleep aside of the trail in multi day races and haven’t a clue if it’s Tuesday of Thursday. 😆🏃♂️🏃♂️
Anyone know where to get the white terrex tank with the into it that he has on at the beginning of the race?
Amazing video and run! what was the cream being rubbed on your legs ?
It's AMP - a sodium bicarb lotion - its awesome!!
@@tomevansultra Do you find it helps with the longer races? I have been using it for shorter higher intensity training sessions when lactate build up will be more. Not on long runs or racing as not at a high intensity.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Never a zero you arrived like a shockwave and western states was epic - unbelievable and your attitude and work ethic deserves all the success you have. Thanks for uploading some much needed inspiration and guts 🤘True competitive force now in the world of trail running, up there with Jim 🤜🤛So cool to have a Brit in the elite events, you could even be a Barkley finisher (when it's back)...that's would be amazing. 🙏
Does anyone know the name of the flask holder Tom is using during this race?
4:29 Man, I miss Mocko.
Scott S me too. What happened to the guy?
Last year he had some decent races: ultrasignup.com/results_participant.aspx?fname=Chris&lname=Mocko He went full professional running a while ago. Is he injured or anything?
That would make a great video: “ In Search of Mocko” 😁🏃♂️🏃♂️
MANTEP!
Who was your pacer Tom ? & how far did he run with you ?
Sound keeps cutting out. Such a bummer.
Normally I think Adiddas looks wonky and always trying too hard to look cool but those shoes and singlet were bad ass.
What a shame the music cuts out on what is a fantastic video
Is the original movie somewhere available?
Would of been much more compelling if a better mic was used during the self reflection parts.
@ 11:00 was that Cody towsend in the back?
how did you get in
13:40 5K yesterday. Incredible range.
Anyone know what they kept rubbing on his legs??
Red Bull™gel.
AMP gel..
17:24 "You look good 💋"
What’s the cream being rubbed on a Tom’s legs at every aid station ?
“Amp PR lotion” Sodium bicarbonate sport lotion
Mentions he was in the army I was like...oh cool me too infantry private then mentions he was a captain I have to giggle a bit at the first thing mentioned
Not to take anything away from your great run, but Rob Krar is the fastest non American. Rob is from Canada.
sound is of a lot
Hi there, I am getting in touch from The Running Channel as we are putting together a video of our Top 10 Running Documentaries/films. We really enjoyed this documentary and would love to feature it in the video. Would it be ok for us to use some footage from this video? We would just use short clips (up to 30 seconds) from the film and would link to the film in the description box. My email is sarah@therunningchannel.com if you need any more information or have any questions. Thank you!
Yes, of course
Audio is 80% of a video. You need a better editor
In theory a great video but lacked content I felt
Phil Orriss Hey Phil. You ever tried covering a 100 mile race over remote trail terrain when an athlete moves faster than you can transfer between CPs?? Clearly not!
red bull, come on...that stuff should be illegal in races.
Why? What’s the difference with a caffeinated sports gel? Which are seen as essential?!
