Keith was so important to the 70s sound...the best era....
Hell yeah. I prefer Keith over Brent.
I also agree with all of the 70s was the best era
Brent > Keith the vocals and harmonies alone… If anything Mickey ruined it for me
One of , if not the best archive I have ever seen/heard. Jerry is so clear and crisp and still beautiful and healthy looking. I've been to a few of these personally and backstage many times but this one is the cake with the frosting.
Gotta watch that frosting
Jerry's voice was so beautiful this night
Thank You VOO, Is there an award we can nominate this fella for? Kindest Head of the the Decade?? Come on guys.....!
This is when jerry was playing a TRAVIS BEAN guitar. I love the 73-77 era of the Dead. 73 was so jazzy then just 4 years later they were more funky.love it all
Noticed the diff guitar Travis Bean huh Nice
Yeah man cool guitars. Aluminum necks
Bean fan here. I've always loved how clean it sounded.
What always amazes me is that whatever guitar he's playing he always has that unmistakable Jerry tone.
He had two TB guitars and I totally agree with Travis here- no pun intended or whatever that would be. It's astonishing his tone. A lot of musicians today after his sound build their guitars like his but man it's a feel. Sometimes they hit it and it don't matter what guitar they are on. When am there ai always tell them "that's it" and they either are disciplined enough to go on with it or like a new meditator, grasp really hard and get a little too excited and lose it. Garcia's sound can never be duplicated because it's his feel. I am a retired show jumper and we say that about great horsemen and women- it's not the technique so much as the feel. Garcia had great feel.
Super cool watching them rehearse and work out the vocal harmony for Stella 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹😎
You can see how much the music moved them when there was no audience. They were legit musicians. It is interesting to see how much work went into Stella Blue.
Oh, and of course a big THANK YOU to Voodoonola for this and all the other videos we're so grateful for!! You're doing the Lord's work, my friend.
I don't care if it is a soundcheck or not, it is great, and from my favorite period.
Something about this Eyes opening...they go into passages (seems led by Phil) that would normally come later...Extraordinary footage, whenever and wherever and it was filmed. Jerry plays effortlessly, is happy.
I love the way they shifted gears similar to the post-3rd verse Eyes jams of 73-74 and stretched out before the vocal in Eyes in 1976. 6/9 in particular is tremendous. Wnile some versions to come in 77 had longer solos before the vocal they never really went with the same approach again like they did in 76. It was a year of both trying something new on purpose and things organically evolving as Mickey was worked back in.
They were in the studio rehearsing and recording more than they had in a while and you can tell they put a lot of effort into all these complicated arrangements, like that themed jam after Dancin. I always wondered who came up with that. Much like the often challenging Slipknot transitions they often miscued that jam after Dancin. But goddamn when they did pull it off, that's the stuff that makes you love the Grateful Dead.
Oh and isn't there evidence suggesting this was actually from May 1976? Blogger and GD encyclopedia Light Into Ashes might have discussed it, or maybe blogger JGMF.
I had this on VHS for the longest time. Damn if the quality was hard to view. That being said, I sat through it a few dozen times.
OMGrateful - this is so !?!
Look jerry's snoopy cool & Donna so groovy & all together so awesome so grateful you shared1
Interesting note on this one...The Dead organization did not know this video existed when I brought it up to them, having obtained a copy in 1995. In fact, they initially were annoyed it existed...Venue was not supposed to video and that might explain why the actual shows were not taped (as far as I know). I gave them a copy for their records thereafter. That said, I suspect all are happy it exists now!
Exactly, bands didn't realize then that fans eat this kind of stuff up like catnip. I was absolutely entranced by the time they got into Stella Blue, it's great seeing and hearing them practice these tunes as they would have before a performance, and everyone is such beautifully cemented in the memories of us all thanks to videos like this. Absolutely happy it exists now!
This is truly a piece of history...a beautiful piece to add to the annals of the Grateful Dead allegory.
How could the band not know they were being recorded? This is professional video from all angles
@@Rockandrollgeerage They likely simply quickly forgot soon after the rehearsal. We have to assume this was not a band filming project. More likely just the venue or maybe Bill Graham's people.
I know the is 4 years late for a question, but did they ever discover what this actually was? It is clearly planned and not a sound check. There's a decent amount of speculation about the origin and that it was paid for by Arista (or whoever their company was in 76) as a test to see what the follow up to the Dead Movie would be. It's supposed to be after a JGB gig or right before one and the story goes that Jerry did the Orpheum gigs to pay for this rehearsal space so the GD could test out a smaller space after having jettisoned the wall. I'm super curious about it. Thanks
46:45 Incredible solo. Like listening to heaven.
+Polar Chimes Agree. The outro on Stella Blue is quite something here.
It's not a solo. It's a jam.
This is freakin gold! Thanks so much for sharing.
This is quite an amazing POST..... great jamming Dancing in the Streets... i m liking the video overlays... and the MAD COOL SHADES...
Mickey looks like he's gakked to the nines. Also Stella Blue made me cry. Everyone looks beautiful and it sounds amazing. Thank you for uploading!
This is awesome - thanks for posting this!!!
GREAT JOB in synch footages & soundboard....Know this for years, but I've never seen the images, & even didn't know they were exist...Many Many Many Thanks from France...for sharing that GEM
I have so many shows to watch. Thanks voodoonola
really cool to see the behind the scenes rehearsal. interesting to see them work out details on stella blue. thanks for post!
Wonderful Eyes of the World....complete with dancing, smiling Jerry
Believe it or not, research & a little logical deduction have concluded that this footage is actually not a soundcheck before the July 12 '76 show.. but is in fact from a series of rehearsals during the last week of May 1976 @ the Orpheum-- in preparation for the very first post-hiatus GD tour that was to commence a week or so later. Great stuff nonetheless!
A Grateful Dead fan doing research? Unheard of! Just kidding, I love how documented this band is and that at a click of a button I go from a 71> 74> 77> 81 show and every I will learn something new from the comments.
The harmony practice on Stella is fun to watch!
18:30 you'll never as cool as Garcia finishing off a roach right before joining in on the lead line of MNS
Filterless cigarette.
bob733333 those fuckin things killed em
"you'll never as cool as Garcia" is sufficient. No one will ever as cool as Garcia.
Cigarette dude
We had this one on boot leg cassette back in 78!!
this is a jewel, thanks NOLA!
What an absolute treat!! Thank God for the tapers and video recorders so we can roll in this video's beauty. Thanks Voodoonola!!! Forever Grateful 💖🤍💙
Love me some Donna..
Still don’t get the Donna Haters..if she was good enough for Jerry and the boys nuff said
I agree with Darrylizer regarding Donna's voice getting out of hand on Playin', though I can't say I loved every minute of it. She also went completely off the rails on Greatest Story, during Jerry's 1973-74-era leads -- the first time I heard that scream I very nearly went off the road it freaked me out so much. Still, aside from moments like those, I actually liked Donna's voice. As a backup singer, she really did complement Bob and Jerry, most of the time at least.
Never saw that much after 1980 maybe three times but this is how I remember them
Thanks
jazziest EYES I've ever heard.... sweet jesus I love the jam
Will do so. Thanks for the advice!
Jerry playing the Travis Bean!
Great interplay between Bob, Phil, and Keith on first part of the "Stella Blue (1)" bridge-- just before Jerry stops it to work out the backing vocal parts!
I was at the show there in 76, i was 10 years old.
So totally agree on your Kreutzman comment. Right on, brother.
Thnx, AGAIN!
Seen 100+ shows but never knew anything like this existed. Even just gettin loose checking they are creating moments that transcend. As I say outloud to myself sometimes when listening to shows "what a band"!
I'm very baked...atm...and trying to process your reply.
@@iwanttobelieve6995 LOL. Enjoy. Here are cliff notes: even when just doing a sound check and practicing they killed it. When i listen to shows on satellite radio in car they still amaze me. Now pass the pipe! ✌😊
@@gregorythomas2674 Ok i see that it makes sense now that the haze has lifted. I must have been enjoying the "show" and didn't realize they were doing a soundcheck. Better load another bowl. Actually Donna sounds ok, she's obviously not high.
@@iwanttobelieve6995 Far out! Believe! 😊✌
Great stuff here. The good old days. When nobody really gave a fuck about who was high or what they were high on. Or what they were wearing.
+Richard M Bullshit
Vivian Stanshall
It may be bullshit for you. It wasn't for me.
***** no im saying bullshit that no cared what drugs you were on and what you were wearing
That's crap! Of course they cared hence the fact it was illegal
Plus this was 76 the glam Rock disco punk days where everyone cared what they were wearing
Maybe at a Dead concert it was true but to say the good ol days like everyday it was like that is bullshit
I think you're looking back at your youth with hazy romantic eyes
***** im sorry for being an ass! I was in a bad mood
I shouldn't bring that crap to this music's videos sorry
you know this isn't what they wore to perform right?
That's "Beat Club"-level camera work.
OMG! Heroic!
Jerry looks like he's having a blast laying down licks.
it's pretty cool to see Jerry on the TB, playing with the Dead. I've only ever seen that guitar with JGB stuff.
czcams.com/video/puMifZvxa5s/video.html Christopher Hazard did a really nice job remastering this one!
This soundcheck is still better than any show in 95'...even Seattle.
That doesn't mean '95 wasn't fun as fuck.
@@bob733333 No offense but 95 was by far the worst year ever for GD shows
Jerry death threats, cancelled shows, Highgate VT & Deer Creek pretty much killed the scene forever (which only lasted another two months till Aug 9)
If you were have that much fun in 95 you were oblivious to what came before and certainly part of the problem that was there for the "party", but brought absolutely nothing to the scene that had cultivated itself beautifully prior.
@@jimkelley6444 My tour in '95 was fun though.
what a cool video
Damn! Donna's lookin' GOOOOOD, folks!
Love jer's wawa jams.
They just loved playing music.
Ya'll are crazy!! God Bless the Dead!!
yea I mean this should be at least 1080p I mean gosh filmed 35 yrs ago wtf was this videographer thinking. For 76 SC this sounds and looks great and shows what dedication this great group had to perfection
Woah, I thought Bobzilla was coming out'a my phone to get me for a minute there.
This is great. I can't hear what they're saying while working on the Stella Blue harmonies, but I'm not so sure it's about Donna being off. I think Jerry just wanted it a certain way, and they had Bobby's vocals to work out, too. It sounds to me as though they started out doing it as they had on Wake of the Flood, then Jerry changed it.
6-15-76 is a stellar show imho.
Top stuff my dead friends, cant complain dear old chaps.
relax and enjoy
voodoonola! wow bro
Wow.
The idea of "good" and "evil" has occupied many. Since I began enjoying music, even playing along with this band here, it occurs to me we really should not use the word "good" or "bad" for music, if only because of how evil our society is, people are horrible to each other without a second thought.
"... don't hang your head let the two time roll ..."
I hope you are well. See, there I said "well" on purpose. May your well run deep, clean and pure. After all, they are just words. Take care.
Deadheads are kind to each other and others without a second thought. Just sayin
One way or another this darkness has got to give
Well life is literally always a fight between good and evil.
A resounding yes
Where the hell is the actual show? It must have been filmed if they have this sound check filmed? MUST SEE THIS.
Great post. Find the rest!!!!
LORD!
I can't imagine working as a roadie while this music was playing.
I need this shit
What the heck is Bobby wearing on his head haha. The Boys Sound Great!!!
Jerry at his funkiest.... owww.
waiter, soundcheck please! this really is very cool! thanks.
That's about as long as I've ever seen Bill's hair
too bad we don't have the actual shows, the 17th was a magic night, as were the others.
I'll say this too: I've got a pretty high natural voice and it can be wicked difficult to hit higher notes and project them outward with volume. It's rare to find a man that works his higher vocal range, that's obviously gold, but women need to work their voices as well. This is a rock concert, not opera, so there will generally be a bit of a more relaxed attitude even with full stadiums. My humble two cents, take 'em for what they're worth!!
Yeah they certainly needed to check the sound but of course what we hear on this recording isn't necessarily the same as what they where check for on their house monitors etc.. Yet if it was close, then notice how very clearly Mickey's cymbal comes through near the beginning but not everything else like Phil's bass at least on on my crappy laptop non-external speakers!
Even through I hated disco l love the disco version of 'Dancin' in the Streets'! Perhaps then I should instead refer to it as the "funk" version in any case I guess I should be happy I got to see it 3 times with K&D at my 1st and 3rd shows at Oakland w/ The Who (Sun) '76 (photos of those 2 appeared inside of the "What a long strange Trip it's been" collection album released by Warner Bros. to fulfill their old record contract when then left for Arista fro "Blues for Allah" which was worth getting even though I didn't, because it it has the ~11/2 min. Studio version of 'Dark Star' otherwise released only on the extremely rare 45 r.p.m. single) & in San Bernardino (1st show of '77) (same show as the debut of 'Terrapin Station' & 'Estimated Prophet') and the last time they did it at Winterland (probably the trippiest version ever); as well as once at Brent's 1st show at San Jose State, before they of course resurrected the original arrangement again for short while in '84 & 5!
Augy,
San Diego
HOT!
Phil is getting down😎
you know you got such dark eyes
Wow way cool Learn something new everyday in Dead land. Consider me subscribed!
Freaky tone; the beginning of the "insect fear sound".
I can assure you 7-13-76 and 7-14-76 were! Remember em well.
I like this concept: If you're gonna criticize, please go ahead and post your vid of doing the exact thing so much better. Go on, get started now!!
i stood outside the show
Where is Attics? I thought they soundchecked Attics, though they didn't play it at a show...I've seen it before on CZcams.
Anyone know what chord voices Bobby's using on dancing in the streets?
A7s in a couple different inversions
To get this straight, we have video of the sound checks, but no video of the shows themselves?? I hope it's in the vault and we'll see some of these as Meet Up at the Movies in coming years. Would've been a great follow-up to Dave's Picks 18, same run!!
Current thinking among Dead scholars is that this is not actually July 12, but the tour rehearsals in late May or early June. We know for a fact that they rehearsed at the Orpheum then, and we have photographs of professional lighting and multiple cameras set up during those rehearsals. Why go to all of that trouble again in July for a soundcheck? Not only that, but by July 12 the Dead had played something like 19 shows (in June), so why would they be working on arrangements in July? Someone somewhere indicated once that the May 28 rehearsals were filmed (ostensibly for a promo video funded by United Artists Records), so that's the best, current thinking: Not July 12, but May 28 (which means, of course, that nothing from July 12 was filmed).
Just curious how one gets to be a dead "Scholar" Are we all no simply, Dead Heads???????. I know people that have been to a thousand Dead Shows, Own Thousands of bootlegs, and have been around since the Acid Tests??? Do they get grandfathered in, does their life experience qualify them to be a Scholar? Just spoofing with you. The term scholar does seem a tad pretentious.
It does seem overbearing, but there are certainly people who qualify as "Dead Scholars". These are folks who often have Ph.D.s or advanced degrees and spend 1,000s of hours researching the Dead, giving lectures, writing books and otherwise chronicling and preserving this remarkable cultural phenomenon. We should be very grateful to these people and their scholarship.
Therefore, I'd say sraileus' comment is entirely appropriate.
Then again, like you point out, that's different from being a long-term Deadhead.
...a menudo parece que lo que ocupa la cabezota de algunos no es gd, la música, o lo que aprendemos de otros que saben más, sino dejar claro quién la tiene más grande...
One gets to be a scholar by devoting time and effort to research, and by sharing the insights gained by this research with a community engaging in similar study. In other words, no, some people are not "simply deadheads" - they are deadheads who know more than you or I do about the details of the band's history.
Did Jerry have more than one Travis Bean? Beautiful guitars
As a matter of fact he did. He had this TB1000 (dual humbuckers) that he used until his TB500 (3 single coils the following year in 1977). He also had another TB that he wrecked attempting to put a middle pickup in.
the Travis
👋
Hi Harry Popick at 58:30
He was the fuckin' coolest cat wasn't he?
There seems to be a big chunk missing?
obviously low energy, we do for any rehearsal / soundcheck
48:51 what did bobby say??!😂😂
practice set
As far as nuggets go, um ahh... I'll be right back. I'm gonna go get a forklift, maybe a crane.
if jerry were fucking up, we'd be bashing him too. It's nothin' but tough love.
I think Brent was the most Soulful of the Keyboardist but I love them all, even Tin Ear Donna.
Did Jerry have 2 Travis Bean guitars?
I just asked the same question and apparently he owned 3. Two TB500s and a TB1000 Artist (which he's playing here). Cheers
The one he's playing here was auctioned off for 300 grand.
One more thing (I swear). Did Keith go out of his way to antagonize camera people so they would intentionally leave him out of most Dead videos? I know keyboardists rarely do anything exciting, but I mean damn! Just some ghostly hand-shots during solos is not sufficient.
Keith had this way of just becoming part of the scenery at shows. He drew almost zero attention to himself, so it was super easy to just never notice him. I dunno, it was just odd.
Is it just me? Or is the Grateful Dead the only band that would do anything close to an hour-long soundcheck? I think they were just looking for an excuse to play. :)
Wow, squeeky clean! Maybe they shoulda stuck to soundchecks (kidding!). Other than the superfluous, redundant Hart (Kruetzman was all the drummer I ever needed with this band) they sound great here. Keith plays so "in" the band, as opposed to his successor, who seemed to play "with": the band, like some dude at home, jamming along with recordings. Fun to hear them working out the bridge to Stella. A great "fly on the wall" look into their soundcheck Cool to see that tube Macintosh amp onstage!
Where do you see it? Didn't they use solid state hifi McIntosh amps?
