People like you have to realize this is literally just countries shit talking each other......... Sure these shit talks can have huge consequences, but people have to stop treating them like they ought to be moral or principled and shouldn't have double-standards........ Don't even bother arguing against their rationale, cos whether you like it or not, under the context of the current world order, to shit talk is rational, just not ideal.........
The faster you accept this, the less time you waste on trying to find every meaningless hypocrisy in everything.......

I think John Stewart is one of those people with good founding principles and good moral character, but he's not immune to the mainstream narratives any more than any of us, and he has the added difficulty of the limited knowledge paradox one of my professors in university explained, where no matter how smart you get, even if you're an expert in your field, in the end, the generation that follows you will know more than you have ever known and yet still know the same because they had more access to knowledge and we're constantly improving the mechanisms through which we cram that knowledge into people's heads, but human knowledge on the whole is constantly expanding, so their slice of the knowledge pie won't be much different than yours. And Jon isn't a total expert, he's a general politics guy. So when we're his age, a younger person in a certain field will be waving their fist at the screen going "c'mon, what!" at somebody like us

Here's the thing though....... he talks about how his analysis always treats nations as rational actors...... but he doesn't realize that the elements of imperialism, expansionism and hegemony is the rational course of action for countries that are just stronger than other countries........
This is why his whole NATO-bad, America-bad argument is meaningless when analyzing geopolitical rivalry, because the rational end state to this whole rivalry will be that both sides will have force projection at each other's backyard, instead of both sides pulling out.......
And this is just talking about rivalry between two great powers, when you take the US out of the equation the whole scenario still stands...... China is significantly stronger than almost every other country in this world, do people seriously think, for a country that relies so heavily on global trade, that if the US didn't exist, they wouldn't be sending their navy and armed forces overseas to protect their trading routes and to respond to emergency situations when they can? Do people seriously think that the only reason that China has a base in Djibouti is solely because the US and US alone might threaten them? No. It's the rational course of action to protect their interests when those interests are offshore...... So then what happens when China sails into the backyard of India or the Philippines? Does India get to cry about “Chinese imperialism”????? They probably do, but you should also understand how meaningless it is.........
I am not saying that any of this combative geopolitical rivalry to become the one hegemony is "ideal", I am saying that singling out the West as the only "evil" party practicing what would be and is practiced by every other powerful nation is itself unfaithful to the ideology of eliminating such hegemonies........
And tragically, the same thing goes for nuclear proliferation....... You are right to believe that a more peaceful world order should be the end goal, but bitching about how it doesn't exist yet because one side is "more evil" than the other is denying the root cause of the problem......

There is a difference between sending warships to protect trade routes and invading other countries and trying to do regime change by dragging out a civil war. The US has a choice of establishing good relations with Russia and avoiding cold war 2 with Russia and China. Also, what is the purpose of antagonising North Korea and keeping the embargo against Cuba?
There is also the military industrial complex and politicians being bought out by them.

“Jon Stewart ends it with a couple of jokes to neutralize the whole thing…”
What? On a comedy show? What in the world is Jon Stewart thinking?
Also, Hasan completely missed the point when the guest talked about power vacuums. The justification is the exact same as any argument against unilateral disarmament: “if we choose to disarm, we’ll be at the whim of those who don’t.” Only in this case it’s “if there is going to be a king, wouldn’t you rather it be us? We at least talk a good game about being fair and just, we only occasionally (YMMV) do tyrannical shit. But those other guys, you know they are tyrants, we can’t let them be king!” It’s a self-serving rationalization, but it is rational. Hasan acts like the dude contradicted himself one line to the next.
