Have you seen the death note musical? What did you think?

Fun fact: The English version of this musical is actually the original!
The show was originally written in English for Broadway and was later translated into Japanese

Yeah, we noticed that after the fact. Apparently they never did the English show right?

Death Note is a musical co-produced by Japan's Horipro and Korea's CJ Culture Korea and Japan. Originally, it was only going to be performed in Japan, but there are only two versions because it was performed in Korea later. Thanks to entrusting the composition to an American composer, there are English songs, but there are no English version musicals.
It would be nice to post a reaction of the English version and the Korean version of the song later. I love your video.
I'm not good at English, so I ask for your understanding.

@@WassupWeebTaku So, Ivan Menchell (English lyricist) has said that a full English version of Death Note is in the works but he suspects that it's more likely to open in the UK before it would open on Broadway.
Personally, knowing some of the nonsensical beef Broadway has with Wildhorn (composer) in particular (as well as the usual suspects for funding these shows), I don't think a professional production in English is likely to happen.
The first song in the show calls out corruption everywhere and Wallstreet (full of corruption) is part of funding. The show was actually workshopped in English and up for funding the same year as Hamilton; but, of course, it's easier for corrupt backers to pat the US on the back rather than call out that corruption.
All of that said, Wildhorn (accepting the fact that Broadway isn't his fan, even though the rest of the world loves his shows) has been known to let regional theatres/programs perform the English premieres (Dracula 2.0 (the Graz version), Cyrano de Bergerac, and Count of Monte Cristo come to mind). So, while a Broadway/West End (British Broadway) production isn't likely, we could still get actual English-language productions in smaller theatres.

Musicals typically run 2.5-3 hrs. You have one evening to tell the whole story. The fact that they got as much of such a beast of a story told in that time frame as well as they did is pretty astounding.
We all know people who stopped watching once L died, so it was a smart choice to make -- cutting everyone's least favorite characters and maintaining the integrity of who really ends it and why.

Too bad you didn't give the English version a chance, maybe in the future you'll do a reaction to it?

No, it doesn't make sense to like Disney movies and not like musicals.
However, liking Disney movies and liking musicals that border on opera (mostly or all sung through (Les Misérables, Jekyll & Hyde, Phantom of the Opera, Tanz der Vampire, Elisabeth) -- that's a different story. Emotions get really intense and some people just aren't here for it and that's okay.
Liking High School Musical is just sad. (I kid, but I never liked it. I had bootlegs of real musicals to watch by the time it came out.)

Bruh not even two seconds into the listening and you hang up on Broadway legend JEREMY JORDAN because protentious anime sub>dub logic? He's part of the Original Death Note Cast and he has PIPES. I'm sorry, I do my damnedest to not leave negative comments but I feel like I should communicate just how difficult it is to try and keep watching this after that initial smack in the face.

😂 it's okay! Get it out. We actually are dub>sub usually. Only switched because it's a japanese musical. We wanted to hear it in japanese. We hear English all the time. But also thanks for watching...as much as you did or didn't 😆

so one thing about anime musicals in general(there are a lot!)
they tend to make their own plots while following either the manga or the anime or both, so if there are differences with the original work is pretty much normal.
death note in particular was a Japanese production but the composer of the songs is famous broadway composer frank wildhorn, he has worked with many Japanese production in the past, and many of his broadway works have been translated and adapted by Japanese theatre companies.
I recognize some of the actors, being huge names in musical theatre, so the production value seems to be way higher than usual.
Musicals from anime/manga are a common thing Japanese audience enjoys so they know their craft. they've been doing musicals for anime/manga for decades :)

Fun fact: All the apples in this show are fake. If you pay close attention, you can actually see that the actor who played Ryuk is only pretending to bite into and chew on them I think they were made of some kind of foam, to make them easy to hide in costumes and such.

The English version of the show is now playing on London in the West End.

      1) is it just the songs as I've heard people call it a concert instead of a musical and 2) I wish I could watch an eng version of the play but I've got no money to watch it and it's driving me insane, all I can find on CZcams is is recordings of the songs

I kinda wish the anime ended similarly to the musical light wining against everyone and kill anyone who knew just to die by ruyk being bord

    • @WassupWeebTaku
      @WassupWeebTaku  Před 2 lety +2

Agreed. But having light defeat L and then his successors compete to catch kira, then eventually defeat kira together in L's honor is amazing. Even the way light looses everything because he sacrificed everyone around him and let's not forget the person who trusted him the most was the one to shoot him. It's all too good.

If you think this musical is dark, you should check out Sweeney Todd... it's about a barber who kills his clients, and downstairs baker who bakes them into meat pies.
