I always did miss detect. It felt more fair to give you a chance to stop the enemy before they could alert everyone.
+Flammenwerfer Portable ops had that sort of thing, where if an enemy spotted you, you could knock him out, or get them to surrender fast enough, their friends would not notice.
Man Of Imperium so did The Phantom Pain, with Reflex Mode.
@@Comic3665 But reflex mode is practically a cheat, You even get a bonus for not triggering it a single time, in fact, You can switch it off on any difficulty. It is more of a casual-magnet additive
@@Comic3665 so did the original Metal Gear with the two different alerts
Enemy sighted requesting back , understood we send additional units to the deck A intense level of suacuity ( player: really come on )
I know it has been said a million times before but God I love how dangerous the enemies were in this game.
It adds to the realism, these are elite enemy mercenaries highly trained to kill.
seeing the enemies switch from the classic predictable patrolling metal gear guards into organized assault squads with a ballistic shield was amazing. watching them tactically clear the lockers/rooms around you, communicating with each other and moving as a team, while you pray to god snake doesn't sneeze and get blasted was mind blowing. MGS2 was so far ahead of every other action game in 2001 that it's absurd.
@@ohnoitsskylar Facts. It's a masterpiece for the step up in graphics and gameplay alone.
lighting does play into gameplay and how it flows, but people try to argue that darkness and night time is somehow not a form of gameplay all on it's own. Why do we have nightvision gameplay then? We should have more of it honestly it's a cool vibe that's not represented as much as it should be. Or taken advantage of in terms of more sophisticated gameplay mechanics. Darkness offers a lot of interesting opportunities in games with innovation in mind.@@PlasticDoor141
I completely agree. There's almost nothing as satisfying in gaming as successfully hiding after getting seen in MGS2. (On Extreme difficulty, of course.)
It's been 20 years since I first heard this masterpiece.
Now I'm 31.. Man how time flies.
I'm 34. It's also been 20 years for me :)
9 years have passed since I made my oldest comments here. I'm 42 now.
Some parts of the world have changed since that time, but I feel that I haven't changed dramatically, so far.
Been like a week for me
36 years old now. This is called Lethal Encounter.

My bones hurt
Why didn't MG3 and 4 have the detect stages in the games. Especially 3. You get spotted by one guy, and instantly everyone knows where you are at. And the stages of alert adds more suspense
L30NHART I totally agree. The detect was great because I remember playing this as a kid and when I got sighted by an enemy I would be desperately try to be fast enough to shoot them before they could reach their radio and the music was so suspenseful I would be like "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT!!!!" and my little brother going "QUICK!! SHOOT HIM SHOOT HIM!!!!". It makes no sense that when one enemy sees you the entire base already knows about it unless gunshots are fired.
actually they didn't. in mgs3 there are two types of alerts. one is a local(before the enemy calls for back up) the other is a global alert(after the enemy calls for help) where backup is been sent. in local alert if you take out all alerted enemies in the area you prevent a global alert. I'm working on a 2.5d stealth game myself and that's why I know this, and I have to say the kojima team made an awesome AI in all of they're games, although some people don't get that an enemy ai in a stealth game in no where simple as COD enemy AI.
+nlz90 You're working on a stealth game? How is it coming along?
MGS3 doesn't really have instant alerts as guards will Perceive Snake IF his camo index is high enough and at a far enough distance. Does 2 and 1 have this because I don't remember. :S
@@trainingben. MGS1 and 2 had no system for staying unnoticed; if you were just slightly out of view, the guard would ask something like "Who's there?" before coming to investigate. You would be spotted almost instantly if you were in the open, forcing you to constant hide behind objects to avoid direct sightline; MGS1 almost required you to check the first person view constantly to see the Genome Soldiers; who's heightened senses made this feeling 20x worse. In MGS2, since they are actual trained Russian Soldiers; like all humans, sometimes they have bad habits and can be slipped past unnoticed. But regardless; they're not stupid; and if they see Snake or Raiden trying to slip by in their obvious uniforms that don't match the ground colour, they will come to investigate.
MGS3 was the first to add the camo index, and it had the best version in my opinion. Though it did suck to constantly have to go into the menu to ensure you were at the best index; MGS4's version where you just automatically gain it by laying on the floor for a few seconds thanks to the Octocamo just never felt right to me. Though at least both of these games made stealth more interesting in that aspect.
Technically; none of the Metal Gears have Instant Alerts either, except for the MSX Metal Gears and MGS1, and that makes sense given they were the earliest games. After that; MGS2 and MGS3 added in moments where guards would radio for backup and begin searching for you. Though 3's search squads I did notice weren't as threatening as 2's; though I'd pin that not to the fact that 2 had a better system; but more that 2 takes place inside a static building environment; while 3 takes place in a jungle. It's going to be a lot harder to find someone in an outdoor environment then indoor.
0:48 so thrilling, so nostalgic, so beautiful!

Something similar was present in NFS MW and Carbon.Immersive indeed

3:00 Trying to sneak to your desk avoiding your boss's maddening gaze.
Complete with combat roll and box disguise!
I wonder *JUST* how effective sneaking into places through the use of a cardboard box really is in real life.
Maybe it might work in some circumstances. Probably in places where the security guards are less alert, like in some apartment blocks in my country.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was the first game that I played in the series and during the tanker chapter whenever the alert phase came on, I was legit terrified. That music really brings out your final fear of oh shit I got to do what it takes to survive
I played first the legendary MGS2 demo that (in Europe) came with Zone of the Enders game! Best game demo EVER!!
@@alej-7434 I beat that game last year. Kojima kino
By far one of the best sets of tracks in video game history. Up there with the Halo Theme, Zelda's overworld, etc.
The one line that made me rage in this game: "I need some help here!"
TOO DAMN SHORT AND UNSPECIFIC >_
lol !
Dimitri Robinson For me, it was "Why are you late with your status report?"
Was always a gift when they'd instead take ages with "Enemehhh sighteeeed! Requesting Backup unit!" Gave you lots of time
+Dimitri Robinson To be honest, that would be the sort of thing you'd hear if you saw an intruder lurking about, I'd likely say it myself if I were in the guy's shoes.
+Mister Hipster the Blister Twister "It's the enemy I need help!" was faster :(
hate the instant alert in MGS3 and MGS4, detect mode was great.
The reason behind that is because 3 and 4 were a lot more open. It's a game design choice. In 2 most of your enemies were confined in a small room with you, so they had that option or window to cancel it out.
Jaysis man i genuinely never noticed all these yrs xD is there no other kind of detect/pre-alert anything since mgs2 ?'
The closest is the reflex mode in MGSV.
I totally agree with you, but i can understand the case of mgs4, with sop and all. Anyway, it was way more logical to wait for the soldiers to call for backup on the radio and then send the assault teams rather than everyone going on search and destroy right away. One of the reasons why MGS2 is my favorite (aside from the typical raiden thing, never got to like his personality)
Sskysnake I love Raiden to me he is equal to Snake, character wise. I really think that everyone hates him simply because he replaced Snake. I'm a different game series they'd probably like him.
This was always my favorite theme to play during the MGO2 era. Made Sneaking and Team Sneaking a lot more tense. Capture and Rescue as well.
Wasn't Raiden in MGO2? Man that would have been fun
Actually, MGO2 is back and playable on ANY PS3. Check out for “MGO2 OFW TUTORIAL” here on CZcams

Listening to sound track again really gives me goosebumps listening to the tension of certain parts of the songs.
MGS2 possibly had the best music throughout the whole series

I was so lucky, i had the chance to grow up and play these beautiful games, ps1 and ps2 era was full of masterpieces.
Probably my favorite track(s) in all Metal Gear. Simply awesome!
"The enemy is firing from an unkown position!"
If you manage to take down the guard who saw you before he calls for backup, then you can go back from detect to sneaking.
It's more difficult when attempting it on higher difficulties because they can dodge your attacks, leaving you on the floor as they run away calling for backup.
You can actually take out their radios with any weapon and they'll just run to the next room and it proceeds from detect to caution which is still better than alert
I have this stuck in my head now. Today was one of the biggest rainstorms I had seen in my area in quite a while, and I was smack in the middle of it the whole day. The subtle intensity of these tracks suited the ambience of inclement weather and distant lightning strikes while I went about my business. 10/10, I don't know why people don't like this game
Then, there's clearing, which is a scripted mode that happens in some areas during evasion. In a nutshell, they'll search an area, looking in specific places and in ways the regular AI wouldn't.
Soldiers have a series of main AI modes: patrol, noticed, detected, alert and clearing. Patrol happens during Sneaking and Caution, though the actual patrol may differ between the two. Noticed happens in Sneaking/Caution/Evasion when they hear you, see a sign of your passing (footprints, for example), or see you in their line of sight but not close enough to trigger Detect - they'll investigate whatever it is they noticed. Detected has a number of triggers:

A long time ago, before CZcams came up, I saw a vid of someone playing the MGS2 demo. He was on the deck at the time, and started the Detect Phase by attempting to choke a guard from behind and dropping him prematurely. The guard then called for back-up, and the Alert Phase was triggered. What normally triggers the Detect phase, and does difficulty affect it? Haven't gotten the chance to play this game at all.

Soldiers have a series of main AI modes: *_Patrol,_* *_Noticed,_* *_Detected,_* *_Alert,_* and *_Clearing._*
*_Patrol_* happens during Sneaking and Caution, though the actual patrol may differ between the two.
*_Noticed_* happens in Sneaking/Caution/Evasion when they hear you, see a sign of your passing (footprints, for example), or see you in their line of sight but not close enough to trigger Detect - they'll investigate whatever it is they noticed.
*_Detected_* has a number of triggers:
1. using a Stun Grenade,
2. using an unsilenced/explosive weapon within their hearing range,
3. them actually seeing you (being within their field of vision on the radar, or in their line of sight and close enough),
4. or brushing against them (easy to do accidentally when going for a choke).
For both Noticed and Detected, the higher the difficulty, the further away they can hear/see, so there is a difference. In Detected, they'll attack and then try to call for help; in *_Alert,_* they'll actively attack.
Then, there's *_Clearing,_* which is a scripted mode that happens in some areas during evasion. In a nutshell, they'll search an area, looking in specific places and in ways the regular AI wouldn't.
Also, in most areas it's possible to go from Sneaking or Caution *directly* into Alert by being seen by a camera/Cypher, or being seen by an assault team member (the better-armed ones that appear during Alert and Caution).

Thanks for the info on the Detect and Alert Phases, DarkMar1ne and thegreatbman. Somehow, I doubt you'd get that sort of interaction from other games these days, but I could be wrong. Moreover, who composed the music for these phases? Was it Harry Gregson-Williams, or Norihiko Hibino? There needs to be more of these musical patterns in games.
*_thegreatbman:_*
Gregson-Williams did the majority of the cutscene and trailer themes, and Hibino did I believe all of the in-game themes.

That concludes the comment chain. Hope that will be of some use to you.
Amazing music perfectly creating tension. Holy crap does this bring me back. major nostalgia. The beat of the drums during the alert! "!"
Soldier:enemy on board !! maximum alert !!
HQ: we can't spare any backup at the moment , go after to the target without additional assistance.
soldier: O.o'' HA ?!
Sending back up!
The alarms in the series were always BREATHTAKING.
I love the transition in the music. All this from the same song and it can swap back and forth flawlessly. I love evasion music.
Nothing to report on the awol soldier...
Ok return to your positions.
The music from detect was perfect. The whole track is perfect, but that drum sync is just amazingly well timed.
Part of why Raiden sucked was his entire alert theme seemed rushed and out of place. The alert here is epic, and gives a sense of urgency. Raiden's was just sort of a "Now your'e screwed" which happened way too often with the Big Shell's layout. Love this theme.
I think Raiden was a bit of an afterthought, initially. I mean, up to a certain point, most of us thought that we would be playing with Solid Snake alone, judging from the initial set of trailers that first appeared for the game.
And then we get surprised by Raiden's appearance during Act 2 (Big Shell), and I guess that's where the complaints started.
Getting back to the music, I agree with you; the whole track flows remarkably well throughout all 5 phases.
SaviourV I doubt it was an afterthought. Keep in mind the entire game was about playing with pre conceived expectations. In this case, the pre-conceived expectation was that MGS2 was going to be exactly like MGS1
+SaviourV Raiden was far from an afterthought. The whole notion of playing as him is one of the larger topic and message that the game tries to tell you.
There's a reason Raiden throws away YOUR dog tags away at the end.
Yes. Raidens alert sounds like gay sex music
They're both awesome tracks imo.
3:13 the scariest part of the track because the game never gets a chance to play this part except when the guards are clearing, since you otherwise
either re-alert, die, or go back to caution before it can kick in

Oh my God... it's been 23 years since the last time i listened to this in game. Lots of memories of hiding...
I've always looved that DVD in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance in which you could play the dynamic music of the game. There are not too many videogames with dynamic music, and MGS2 probably was one of the first ones to implement this feature.

VERY EARLY into my career at GameStop I was riding on the high of Metal Gear Solid with the hype of Twin Snakes launching in March and Snake Eater later that Fall, I had found out about this companion disc second hand and start scouring all the stores in our district to locate a copy. I was successful, and had no idea what I was getting, and sometimes that's 100% okay.
Probably my favorite things about this disc is the ability to view cutscenes at almost any camera angle, and what the original art direction was going to be with a stylized manga looking Solid Snake resembling the instruction manual artwork

On a side note, did all the music tracks (except the boss- and cutscene-related ones) have the same 5 patterns (Sneaking↔Detect➡Alert↔Evasion↔Caution)?
Also noticed that you can't go back to Detect status from Alert (rightly so), but could you go from Detect to Sneaking status if you're lucky in-game?
*_Forked Entry (formerly DarkMar1ne):_*
*Detect Phase* = Enemies in room physically saw you and will call for backup.
*Alert Phase* = Backup has been called and all enemies start shooting at you.
Breaking the sequence from *Detect Phase* to *Alert Phase* by taking down the guard who saw you will cause the game to return to *Sneaking.*
As for difficulty, on Hard and then on, guards will dodge your grabs (and punch/kick combos, if memory serves), and kick you afterwards, flipping you onto the floor while they run away to call for backup.
*_thegreatbman:_*
On Document, all the tracks have this pattern, but in practice there are areas without Detect (e.g. Deck 2 on Tanker or Arsenal Gear on Plant, where being seen = instant Alert), and areas without Detect, Evasion or Caution (e.g. the sniping sequence with Emma on Plant), so it's not completely accurate.
