ive never seen anybody ride western that way my whole life this is completely wrong in my eyes whenever we trot or cantor we don't just sit in the saddle we do 2 point and we move with the horses body movement idk where you got this from
A nice video. My father had a devout hatred of an English saddle. I was taught to thread the reins between the fingers of the right hand. Left between the index and middle fingers, with the right rein between the ring finger, and the little finger, with the remaining length trailing out the “bottom” of the hand/fist.
Hm, I think everyone is taught a little differently because I learned western and nearly all the horses have a throat latch and usually our reins are connected. Also what was the “jog”? I learned trot and it’s the same thing as the English trot soo ..?
We also have a throat latch on some of the bridles but it differs. If you are a western starter, the reins can be attached but usually they aren't. The jog is a very slow trot as the lope is also a very slow canter. These are mostly used in the discipline western pleasure. They are just more comfortable to sit. But we in my stable also say and do trot as horses have to be specially trained and/or bred to perform jog and lope ^^
It's pretty rare that your reins are connected in Western. We usually show in Split reins (what she's using), or Rommel reins. Rommel reins are what we use on a bridle horse. Splits are for cow work and are crossed over the horse with tails on each side. 😂 YOU NEVER show Western Pleasure holding the reins the way she said, you hold you splits crossed in the left hand, your other hand hanging loose at your side. 😂 I
Our reins were tied together in a knot and left long in Western. The horses each wore whatever style bridal they responded best to. And we were taught walk, trot, canter. We were definitely not showing, though.

Jog????? It's still a trot in western! And that horse was NOT doing a good trot or lope. It should've been going faster. Edit 9 months later: I now know that jog is the correct term for showing in Western pleasure, so don't hate on me 😂
I use a roping saddle from when I won an event in my area, spilt reins (separate) and all the basics. All this about the western side is all off. Plus why is the horses head running so low? And most western bridles do have the neck strap. Mainly because when we’re out in the field messing with each other is usually by pulling off the thing altogether. Walk, fast walk, slow trot. No lopping in there at all. There is NO need for an expert for any of this. My QH and draft mix has no withers. So it was hard to find where the saddle sat. Plus each horse might need a different size. Ranger (QHDraft) is a 17 saddle. He’s massive, at least 15 hands. He is big all around. Not fit for any fast pace events(barrels) but he’s amazing on trails of when I’m working out in the back. He has a problem keeping his head up and that has caused him and me to be rolled more times that I can count due to him picking up speed and me not pulling his head up in time. My fault, but it is something I’m working on with him. A lot of this is wrong. If you need information on western riding look for someone who actually rides western. Don’t base off google or whatever this woman based it off of. Not to be rude or disrespectful at all, but please before you do something like this make sure you look at multiple different sources and talk to someone who does that specific thing.

This video is intended for people who want to show in the stock horse circuit. In regards to your statements: if you are working cattle in the field, you're going to need to lope. I agree each horse is going to need a different saddle WIDTH. '17' is referring to the seat size, meant for your butt. The width of the saddle is to accommodate the width of the horse. Western saddles usually refer it to "semi-quarter horse bars", "full quarter horse bars", etc. I am happy that you won a saddle, but chances are it doesn't fit your wide guy like it should and that is why you are having difficulty finding where the saddle should sit. Good point that people should look at multiple sources, I agree completely. However, I have been riding Western since I was born, trained multiple world and reserve world champions (in western), and started numerous colts (in western). Don't believe me, click on my channel name and watch some of my other videos. I know what I'm talking about.
I want to do Western and English but I need to figure out what one I think is better I like both I want a western and English horse but I don’t know what to get first I really want to do jumping and I’ve been riding western for longer than I’ve been writing English but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know Note both of my parents want me to do western but they said they will be fine with whatever I chose

That first horse looks identical to a horse I used to have. It warms my heart to see this horse. Mine died of COPD we had to put him to euthanize him because he was struggling to breathe and we done everything we could including oral steroids to open the airways. He lived a long full life and passed at age 25. He was the sweetest horse I ever had. He was a good boy ❤️
She doesn’t seem as comfortable in the western saddle and there is not that much connection when she’s riding western so I think she mainly focusses on riding English
is it just me or is your horse way behind the vertical? And the differences between western and English is not so much the tack your ride in as the style of which you ride. I ride western and I use snaffle bits and connected reins. And actually there are very few western riders I know that don't have a throat latch on their bridles. And I have never heard a western rider call a trot a "jog"

Gamer Southern99 Western bridles *can* have throat latches, the reins *can* be connected. It is a matter of different style. For what I do, connected reins aren’t allowed. As far as the gates go, it is proper terminology associated with the discipline.

Holy horses. Does anybody in the comments understand the English and Western pleasure worlds? All what she is doing is normal for these disciplines. I use my paint quarter horse for dressage, hunters, and eventing. He is pretty much an all around english boy.

It's sad that I already know the difference but I'm just that bored that I'll watch anything in 'suggested'. I'm started out in English and transitioned to western. Honestly I HAAATED the English tack and I found it made a lot of the horses I worked with incredibly uncomfortable.

Here we are on CZcams put “AQHA Congress western pleasure” in your search bar and you will see that this woman is not as crazy or dumb as you make her seem. By your description of what “western riding” is I’d assume you don’t know what Western Pleasure is so here I’ll educate you. Western pleasure is supposed to look easy. That’s the whole point. Your supposed to be able to ask your horse to lower its head and get on the bit and give it all the directions while using nothing but your seat and legs. Albeit I do think the way people breed and train their horses makes their movement seem very unnatural and almost lame, but the sport has good intentions and is quite fun if you try it. This woman may not be the perfect western rider but you have no right to judge because we all have our faults as riders. For this very brief and short video I thought she did very well at touching base of what English and western pleasure is. Albeit there’s 1000 more steps to this sport I didn’t think she gave any misinformation either.
Idk why y'all r hating on her. That's how she was taught. And in western pleasure that's how your movements usually r. I mean my Great-Grandma rode western pleasure. Me I only barrel race, pole bend, goat yet, rope and trail so I don't know the specifics but she is 92% of what I was taught. I have only rode English once and that was having to act as. a. jockey for a friend as a dare 5 years ago so I don't know anything on English really even though I'm the granddaughter of a show jumper/barrel racer.

Apart from personal preference, I'll do it when I feel safe enough. I am more confident in a western saddle, even if the horse is an english horse. When they are broke enough, I'll start riding them english. It's a horse to horse situation.
K. native Rezz Some English riders are terrible people and treat there horses terribly also. Same goes for western. And in the horse world Reining (a Western discipline) is the equivalent of dressage. Both disciplines involve collection, control, pacing, and numerous other difficult tasks. In no way is English inferior to western.
That double leverage metal bit is way to much and not neccessary. The pain is just not justified. You can ride without a bit and do everything you need.
There are several kinds of bits used in western. More than likely that's the bit she prefers to use or the horse was trained to use. And for the bridle, it probably wasn't tightened. Honestly, my bridle I use for western is basically the same as the English. Its just the style of bridle she chose; I imagine it can be tightened to for better
@@LaurelH ive only ridden Western and how I was taught was more than likely different. Commonly I use split or neck reining. The bridle you used for English is very similar to my preference. We actually just use walk trot canter and run in my lessons. I agree there is definitely so much more than what can be explained in a video. As someone who knows nothing about English riding, I enjoyed seeing the differences

There is another way to hold the reins while riding western. You can cross the reins.

There's 3-4 says to hold the reins in western lol but I think she may have just been taught that one.

I can see elements of both English and Western in traditional and more contemporary Persian riding style, interestingly not the same..
We call it trot to lady and western headstalls usually have a throat latch. And those “separate reins” are called split reins.

Like even I saw a few problem with her Western Pleasure. And I've been riding for most of my life and competed in English and western events. Overall though she put in a great effort with what tack she had and I can applaud her greatly for that
Yes because I suppose in western riding if you are going fast and leaning back in the saddle like she was wouldn't throw you off
when she demonstrated the walk trot canter for both the english and western it looked super slow. the canter should be much faster then the trot. also fix your microphone.

Ahh, no. Western bridles have throat latches, the reins can be connected, and the "jog" is a trot, and it goes faster. The "lope" is a canter. If you're going to talk about Western style, get it right. I understand things might be different for other people, and she has the little details right, but the pacing is all wrong.
Gamer Southern99 Western bridles *can* have throat latches, the reins *can* be connected. It is a matter of different style. For what I do, connected reins aren’t allowed. As far as the gates go, it is proper terminology associated with the discipline.

You don't HAVE to ride in a snaffle bit in English. I have seen Olympic jumpers ride in a bit less bridle.

Holy horses. Does anybody in the comments understand the English and Western pleasure worlds? All what she is doing is normal for these disciplines. I use my paint quarter horse for dressage, hunters, and eventing. He is pretty much an all around english boy.

Hmmm, not really... its a whole lot more than that and she's holding the reins wrong, she doesn't look comfortable. (yeah western is more comfortable than English but you can absolutely be comfortable in an English saddle)

It's sad that I already know the difference but I'm just that bored that I'll watch anything in 'suggested'. I'm started out in English and transitioned to western. Honestly I HAAATED the English tack and I found it made a lot of the horses I worked with incredibly uncomfortable.
Isis McElroy It proba y made them uncomfortable because of saddle fit. English saddle fit is much more specific than Western fit.

You don't just sit there and you NEVER I repeat NEVER lean back in your saddle. If the horse is cantering galloping or a fast trot then it stop quickly leaning back or forward will throw you off the horse. And we do more then just sit there and in western you hardly ever walk so you are always doing something. I really wish people would stop talking about things they clearly have no knowledge on. Here we are on CZcams put “AQHA Congress western pleasure” in your search bar and you will see that this woman is not as crazy or dumb as you make her seem. By your description of what “western riding” is I’d assume you don’t know what Western Pleasure is so here I’ll educate you. Western pleasure is supposed to look easy. That’s the whole point. Your supposed to be able to ask your horse to lower its head and get on the bit and give it all the directions while using nothing but your seat and legs. Albeit I do think the way people breed and train their horses makes their movement seem very unnatural and almost lame, but the sport has good intentions and is quite fun if you try it. This woman may not be the perfect western rider but you have no right to judge because we all have our faults as riders. For this very brief and short video I thought she did very well at touching base of what English and western pleasure is. Albeit there’s 1000 more steps to this sport I didn’t think she gave any misinformation either.

Idk why y'all r hating on her. That's how she was taught. And in western pleasure that's how your movements usually r. I mean my Great-Grandma rode western pleasure. Me I only barrel race, pole bend, goat yet, rope and trail so I don't know the specifics but she is 92% of what I was taught. I have only rode English once and that was having to act as. a. jockey for a friend as a dare 5 years ago so I don't know anything on English really even though I'm the granddaughter of a show jumper/barrel racer.
Isadora looked like such a big girl in the curb bit. To hell with trends I think Neon looked sharp in the light leather. My question is say you started you horse Western , how far along in the training do you go until you introduce an English saddle?
Apart from personal preference, I'll do it when I feel safe enough. I am more confident in a western saddle, even if the horse is an english horse. When they are broke enough, I'll start riding them english. It's a horse to horse situation.
Westetn training isnt complicated or anything special. English riding on the other hand is where the real riders are at
K. native Rezz Some English riders are terrible people and treat there horses terribly also. Same goes for western. And in the horse world Reining (a Western discipline) is the equivalent of dressage. Both disciplines involve collection, control, pacing, and numerous other difficult tasks. In no way is English inferior to western.

There are several kinds of bits used in western. More than likely that's the bit she prefers to use or the horse was trained to use. And for the bridle, it probably wasn't tightened. Honestly, my bridle I use for western is basically the same as the English. Its just the style of bridle she chose; I imagine it can be tightened to for better

@@LaurelH ive only ridden Western and how I was taught was more than likely different. Commonly I use split or neck reining. The bridle you used for English is very similar to my preference. We actually just use walk trot canter and run in my lessons. I agree there is definitely so much more than what can be explained in a video. As someone who knows nothing about English riding, I enjoyed seeing the differences
I’m cutting,reining,trail (I think), and western pleasure (I think) YOU HAVE TO HAVE RIDE LIKE THAT YOU CAN ONLY RIDE WITH ONE HAND!
When they were riding wester they were not even trotting/ jogging or cantering/lopping
Western is trotting NOT jogging
