  • Don't suffer in silence! Depression can be conquered & WILL be conquered. But we have to stick together with it. This was a very difficult video to make. I do talk WAY too much, but i wanted to try and leave it as raw as possible. The less i adjusted it the better.
I hope someone somewhere takes something away from this video.
Please stay safe, look after yourself and remember there IS ALWAYS someone to talk to!

Depression is very much misunderstood by those that don’t suffer or have had first hand experience with loved ones that have it . It’s a much bigger problem that is not recognised or acknowledged. Big respect to you sir for covering this subject.

I do over analyse thing which makes my anxiety even worse, finding it very difficult to get back into driving, I have a class 1 but finding someone to help me just one day a week to help to build my confidence, I’ve even offered to work for free in exchange for the help, but can’t find anyone willing to help which makes me feel even worse because you feel useless not wanted, I never thought this would happen to me I’ve always been a happy go lucky person and now my life has changed.
Deady thanks for doing this video cheers

👏👏👏👏 love it mate spot on wearing a smile to hide the pain and so people don’t judge you wrong. I buried my son when I was in my 20s hardest thing I’ve had to do and I carry it with me everyday I’d never even seen a dead body until I say my son. I did it all carried him and placed him in his grave so you could say I’ve tested my own grave. Mum was found dead in her flat from an overdose and dad died of cancer and I’m 34. I was on citalopram50mg and quetiapine 200mg turned me into a dribbling mess. I did the same as you accepted it and stopped the meds. Overthinking is spot on I always do it. We keep striving and keep pushing but the stigma is as men were not aloud to crumble not aloud to cry we have to be strong. I say we’re not robots we need to think of ourselves now and again. I’ve been there I used to think weed helped and the drink helped but your spot on again deady it doesn’t help. I no longer smoke weed I no longer drink i don’t even smoke a cigarette anymore and feel much better for it. If you accept that things aren’t fair and things will go wrong you’ll feel better. The more you battle depression the more it will hit you the more tired you become. Now I’m a fully qualified artic driver loving life 😊 yo-yo yeah I thought of walking the dog trick lol windmilling 😂😂

A very brave vid thanks for posting it. Over a period of time agency work can take it's toll. Starting a new job is a stressful experience for many, starting a new job 2 or 3 times a week with agencies can be more stressful than we realize. Keep the vid coming as they are a breath of fresh air. Get your class 1 sorted as it will open lots of new doors also an ADR ticket will more than pay for itself if you continue with the self employed route . Same. For example, whenever I browse job vacancies my mind always plays scenarios of the worst possible thing that could happen in that role. After all, we seem to gravitate towards jobs like trucking, because of that very reason. I've tried the office and the factory jobs and believe me, there's nothing worse than being stuck in a room with a bunch of people, who you don't particularly like and not being able to escape from that scenario.

Very well done with this video mate, like yourself I have suffered with depression and anxiety most of my life and have parents and other family members who have mental health problems. After coming out of a dark spell recently a change in my life circumstances and cutting back on my alcohol intake has lead me to a place where I am the happiest that I have been since my early teens. All too often men suffer in silence with these issues often afraid to speak out as they perceive this as a weakness, we are thankfully in an age now where these issues are being addressed more at a surface level and hopefully it can result in people being able to cope with these problems and not to indulge further in self destruction or even to take their own lives.

Wow man! Where to start... That was brilliant mate - fair play to you for sharing that 👍🏼
Everyone is different and I’m sure how each person who lives with depression handles it differently but it’s great to hear how individuals deal with it. You certainly were not babbling on - it was all good information.
You struck a real chord when you mentioned Chester - I agree totally, if you listen to his records you can hear him crying out for help - but as you rightly pointed out, some people only laughed while others thought it was only entertaining. Depression affects everyone, those who have everything in life and those who have nothing. It’s not caused by materialistic things, it’s something in our DNA that somethings gets triggered in our everyday life - learning to handle it is the key to a happy future.
Anyway, that’s a nice idea about Instagram - I’m on there @peteroreilly with a few photos from my hobbies, cars, trucks and buses - they don’t judge 😉
I hope this video gets lots of views - it’s a subject that if we talk about it more that people may begin to realise that it’s not just themselves, thousands of people are going though the exact same thing and so may feel less.
    Top work 👍🏼

Problem is that many people genuinely don't care about other people but themselves, some are out there purposely to make your day hell. I was in the Stobart office the other day and heard one of the guys in the office mention a driver and how his not gonna pay the driver his night out, £25, because he took a detour. Do you seriously think that guy would rather spend a night in the lorry for a misery £25 than be home with his family, that is depressing enough as it is and that guy wants to be spiteful and not even pay the guy. Behaviours like that I can not stand. Its understanding yourself, which can take a long time, and understand what triggers you off and then try avoiding it. People trigger me off and many times I refuse to talk or deal with certain people if they trigger me off. And when it comes to talking to people about it some just laugh or say "what you got to be depressed about". Some say "it's all in your head bruv". Where else would it, it is called mental health.

Gareth, I'm so glad I found your channel. Your honesty and openness is so refreshing and very much appreciated. As a 35 yr old with Aspergers and anxiety/depression combined with self confidence that's been repeatedly shattered, has made it nigh on impossible to hold down a job for the last 13-15 years. Acceptance is the strategy that has helped me so far, having found curing it to be painfully futile.
Also, I've had the itch to train for HGV driving for several years, and have had nothing but discouragement from friends and some family. A mate who'd drove Class 1 for most of his life, actually once threatened to break my legs if I pursued my license saying "these days it's just stressful, underpaid. too much pressure, too competitive, abusive employers etc".
Your positivity about the experience, the training, and having found a good employer has given me hope, and I'm very tempted to make the investment and take the leap. Thanks, Chris ;-)

Excellent video. I know what guts it took for you to be able to talk about this. Like you said, it's the bastard of depression that it fills you with doubt and fear, so a huge salute to you for doing it. The medication can be a big problem because pretty much every anti-depressant is a beta blocker. They doesn't cut out bad emotions, they cut out every emotion. They don't make you feel better, they make you feel nothing, which might work for some people, but for the majority it just masks the issues. I am sure that someone is sat watching the video and saying to themselves, "That sounds just like me". If it helps someone even just take one step to feeling better, then it's been well worth it.

So glad I quid dope and hardly drink any more. It has allowed me to come to terms with my depression instead of trying to paint over it. Drugs, any drugs, are not the answer. I'm a firm believer everyone could use a therapist every now and then, like a vehicle needs a service. Preventative action as apposed to reactive.

Ayup pal. Watched all the way through and just wanted to thank you for being so open about your own struggles.
My wife keeps asking why I started vlogging and I just shrug her off. The truth is, a truck is a lonely place so when I'm filming and talking to the camera, I dont feel alone. When I'm home and the family is out, I lock myself away in my workshop and film for my other channel.
You mentioned about drink and drugs. My comfort is food. When I'm feeling down I'll binge eat and then feel even worse as I'm ebarassed at the size of me already. Its just one big vicious circle but we put the smile on and go about our day!!!!

I'm the same mate, i eat now. I am trying my best to knock drink on the head this year as it gets me in situations i don't like. But you are right. I vlog because it keeps my mind occupied, i have a very active mind & most of the time the activity in my brain is Anxiety or Paranoia. When i vlog i think about what to say, what to record, how i could make people laugh etc etc. It takes my mind off other things. It is deffo one big vicious circle & it's a hard one to break!

Worst thing I ever did was take advice from a cousin the very first time I admitted that I might been depressed. It was another ten years before I had the courage to actually address it. Point being, not everyone is a qualified ear and they could possibly make matters worse. A stranger is sometimes better as they have fewer preconceived ideas about the individual. Then, poor mental health should be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Hi Gareth my Friend. You are an inspiration. My Son is 28 and has ADHD and I can perhaps have some appreciation as to what that has brought both to him and us as a family. EXTREMES EXTREMES. He focus on taking weed to what he says help him to control his anger and concentration. From that comes him selling it to help fund his habit. He has a great heart and lots of potential and the challenge is making him believe. Hes a strapping good looking young man and on the outside there seems nothing wrong. Within his relationships suffer and all aspects of his life. As his Dad I sleep badly waiting for the phone to ring expecting the next EXTREME whether the Police or anything that is created with his ADHD. Gareth you should be very proud of yourself and Im sure your Family is extremely proud. Im a 5 year old Father who admires your openness and honesty to give other the confidence to perhaps start to open up to others who see your positivity. Thanks Gareth for giving me hope that one day my Son can confront his demons and come through the other side. Love and best wishes to you and your Family. Drive safe my Friend.

Fantastic video Gareth. So open, and caring. Very well put together. People need to be aware of mental health. If you break your leg, people want to sign your cast and be with you, if you're broken inside your mind, nobody wants to help, and people run away. It should not be like that. Mental health is as important as any other health, if not more important. Anyway, thank you for doing this vlog. I can see it took a lot the do. You know where I am if you want a chat, a bit of banter, or to just take the piss out of me. I may not be able to solve any problems, but I'll certainly try and help take them off your mind for a bit. Take care bud.

    • @BlackTubers
      @BlackTubers Před 4 lety

Agreed, but it's not always possible to assess the state of someone's mental health by looking at them. Maybe if we all wore an identifier people might want to sign our casts too? It's not like people who are depressed make it the first topic of conversation in social situations ... pfft we/us/they might not even get out of the house

Oh mate, i don't think i've ever heard or read anyone describe it better, you've pretty much described myself! As others have said, that took a lot of guts doing that video, could see how hard it was for you. I have never been strong enough to talk to anyone about it myself, apart from once to to my GP who pretty much laughed at me, and i think i blurted something out to my parents during an argument after my sister and brother in law became exasperated with me and ended up not talking to them for over 6 months! I still get regular jabs from him, because i doesn't understand me, because i won't talk. Maybe because they are family and don't want them to worry, although Dad seems to be able to tell when something's wrong as he's always asking if i'm alright when i'm not, and i reply with i'm fine, and it irritates me because i can't talk about it. A friend has recently told me that he suffers from depression too and said he needs someone to talk to, after doing exactly what dad does to me when he posted a cry for help status on Facebook, so sounds like a good excuse for a drink in the pub soon.
Think it all started with being bullied at school with me, pretty much every day of primary and secondary, which made me comfort eat and get really fat and then i hated myself even more. If any of you reading this are in school, or collage or uni, please don't bully, it is the most c*untish thing you can do to a human being! Kids aren't always strong enough to just brush it of, it can stay with you for the rest of your life! I decided at 29 that i would get a mountain bike for the sole reason of loosing weight, but discovered that while i was out, wizzing through the trees as fast as i could concentrating on not crashing, i was happy and wasn't thinking about anything else, and rode at least 5 days a week losing 4 stone. Exercise is definately my therapy, and 6 years ago took up kayaking too so that i have no excuses not to get out and do something, but anxiety has kept me in bed many times and over the last few years have put some of it back on again🙄 Plus breaking up with my ex, who in my head was probably my only chance of a relationship totally messed my head up. Your advice sounds like a good plan, but "windmilling" may stay in my head for a long time🤣
And that Linkin Park track, oh my god, it couldn't have been clearer what he was trying to tell everybody! I've never properly listened to the lyrics before!
Oops sorry, i seem to have waffled on a bit too lol!

Physical reality depends on what vibration your on if you are on a low vibe you experience that which is depression. If your on a high vibe you experience happiness. Is not that difficult you just have to change your perceptions on what makes you unhappy.

A lot of people are depressed and don't even know it, especially those that have dependencies or need a drug fix to get through the day.

Well then your in a rut you need to break the cycle.a habit is something you don't know your doing but when you do it again it becomes a choice. If you always do what you've always done youl always get what you've always got. Depression any kind of pain is resistance to the natural self. But labelling yourself as this or that becomes who you are.chose not to.but I agree any drug or drink to cope needs taking care off first coz you can't raise your vibration when the body is stressed.

I got into the habit of having a couple of beers whenever i park up in the services too, but it really doesn't help and has to stop. What has helped is doing a job i really enjoy, but on the other hand i'm pissed off with myself for letting depression and anxiety stop me from doung it 20 years ago, then my life might have turned out differently, i wouldn't still be living with my parents because i'm to scared of being alone, not trusting myself to be on my own. But then, being on my own is one of the things i like about driving HGV, i'm mostly still confused lol.

I did that for years Glynne. Was a chronic pothead for over 20 years and a drunkard for at least 3 of those years during the peak of my depression. Quit spliff almost 3 years ago and hardly ever drink these days. Really helps having a clear head on to deal with life in general. Being sober also helped me face up to the root of my condition and accept it. Since then, I just been rebuilding around stuff that my escapisms helped me avoid.
