I've had my SE DGT Gold Top for a few days now and it's proved even better than I dared hope. The set-up was spot-on straight from the gig-bag, and the neck shape is perfect for me. The pick-ups are really good, with a great range of tones, and the trem is simply the best I've ever used. My example seems to be a lightweight too, weighing in at just over 5lbs and still balancing perfectly, making it ideal for me. I love it!

I've got a DGT SE 'burst, that I'm just in love with. I'm a big fan of The Smiths and Johnny Marr, and my DGT nails the tones that Johnny gets out of his 335. And when the coils are split, it gets jangly, especially with my DOD compressor. Just a great guitar. And it will squeal out "La Grange" when asked. ♥♥♥♥♥

Back in 92, I went to the local music studio to jam with friends, and one friend invited their friend. He came in with a blue PRS. It was the most beautiful guitar I've seen up to that point. I had a cheap Jackson, at the time. Since then, I always wanted one. I'm so glad they made the SE line. I have two SE's (Custom 22 and McCarty 594), a Silver Sky (core) and a Dustie Waring CE. I still haven't hit the stratosphere of owning a core DGT, Tremonti, McCarty. I can't imagine paying that much for a guitar (unless I was rich), but the SE line fulfills that urge to own these great guitars, at a 1/4 of the price. I almost bought this guitar, but opted for the single cut McCarty. But, the DGT sounds great. Congrats. Enjoy it.

My PRS SE DGT arrived two weeks ago. Nothing that any reviewer has said about this model is hype. David Grissom, PRS, and Cor-Tek joined to create a guitar that in my opinion represent one of the best values in a solid body guitar that I have ever owned and over the past 50 plus years I have owned a lot of guitars and basses. If you're at all on the fence about getting one, buy it. You won't regret it.

A month & a 1/2 ago I was able try out a few McCarty 594 SE guitars liked one, because the other 2 was not really set up well. And then 3 weeks later I was alerted by another local shop informing me the arrival of their new DGT SE models. Gave a spin to 3 DGTs, and a McCarty 594 SE. you guessed it I eventually decided to go home with the DGT SE. Although I was always never a fan of guitars w/ whammy bars, this DGT will be my 2nd in a pretty long while (my last one I had was a fender squire in the early 90s). Still wanting get a McCarty 594 SE in the future though.

I am also a PRS convert. I bought one of the original Silver Sky core guitars (..and it came with a hard case back then)..this replaced my old Fender Custom Shop, yes it's that good. I the came across a fantastic 2000 Custom 22 with Dragon pups which is fabulous. I bought a DGT core after all the glowing reviews but did not like the neck profile at all, it was too chunky for my liking so sent it back. I tried the DGT SE at my local store and bonded immediately. It is a sensational guitar and as well made as the core for less than half the price. The DGT SE gold top is my main gigging guitar now and I absolutely love it. Thanks for your work and don't bother trying a DGT core, stick with the SE... just sayin'..

I’m not inclined to dislike any guitar. That includes PRS. I have played a few. They were all good, and worthy guitars. Due to some combination of neck profile, scale length, features or colors, or frankly even just bank account…. I’ve never bought one. Yet.
I find that I tend to enjoy the 25 inch scale models feel a bit more than the others, or maybe just those ones I’ve played that are 24.59 inch scale had thicker necks or profiles that didn’t work as well for me, or feel as natural and more immediately comfortable to the hand.
Whatever the case, I’m looking for the right PRS with the right features and specs and of course, especially in the case of PRS- at a price I can afford.
For a Gibson type guitar, I’m looking for the typical four-knob control setup so this one might not be for me, but if I could find one and try one before buying… maybe the lack of four-control setup might ultimately be ok.
Good, thorough and even-handed review. Thanks.

@@BeastMadeReviews I don’t recall that I have. I don’t recall playing any four-control PRS aside from a SE signature model of some sort that had a thicker almost D type of neck profile combined with a very narrow neck. Not terrible but it didn’t immediately feel comfortable in my hand or in ten minutes of playing. Whatever the case, it does prove the tremendous variety of PRS details, and that so far, for reasons already articulated, I haven’t found one right for me, in my limited ability due to available retail stock. It reaffirms for me that perhaps more than for any other guitar brand, you actually have to play a PRS, and choose the right one. I think the right one is out there. I just haven’t been able to put my hands on it, yet. Maybe a McCarty of some kind might be right… at the right price. I’ll keep an eye out in my (self) limited time in music stores. [Sidebar]: The pandemic got me out of the habit, routine or inclination to go to any physical music store for anything whatsoever, and it it avoided the frustrations of them increasingly not having the increasingly specific things I wanted to buy or consider buying.
I appreciate the suggestion and will certainly keep it in mind. Thanks!

you have to get a fret dress file (or make one). They're not too expensive, but it's not a tool you would use a lot unless you repair guitars. It seems to be an excellent guitar, but I don't understand how it is a good value for the money because a guitar made in Japan, regardless of the brand, will likely be of equally good or even better quality. So is it really worth it, except if you really want the brand name? And I'm talking about guitars that are made in Japan, not necessarily Japanese brands, it could also be Fender. Maybe it's because you all live in the USA? Where I live, guitars made in Japan are much cheaper than US models and of better quality too. If anyone knows more about this, I'm curious.
Or maybe I’m missing something about that guitar , you tell me

    • @BeastMadeReviews

Japanese-made guitars are exceptional. They're really on par with the best quality guitars in the world. But they're also not cheap in the USA. I doubt Japan would be able to make a high quality guitar for the US market at this price. (I could be wrong). I do think one of the appeals is the brand, but also the PRS guitar has a few things about it that make it different than other guitar brands. I do love Japanese guitars, though.

      @itsalwayssomething7490 Před rokem +4

These guitars are made in Indonesia in a factory PRS built and Cor-tek manufactures them in. For instance, this guitar ( PRS DGT) made in America is usually around $4500 dollars. The one you see on screen is $850. The quality of the guitar is just as good on the SE models as their American counterpart. Most of the cost of a guitar comes from the labor in building it. And of course, on the SE guitars, you have parts made in Indonesia so the cost is cheaper.
But, this isn't to say the quality suffers. The import guitars still come through the American factory to be checked, before they send them out to stores. All the vigorous quality checks are still there. The machines and the process of making it is the same. The skills of the workers are the same.
What's really important on a guitar is how it feels, plays and sounds. If you desire all the bells and whistles, then you buy the American version. You'll get a work of art of a guitar.
If that doesn't matter to you, they offer the SE versions. They are beautiful, as well. They are all great guitars.
Listen to the guitar on the video. It sounds so sweet. So, you certainly get a great instrument for a more affordable price. Considering how much an American PRS core guitar costs, the SE line is a steal for what you get. PRS is also one of the few guitar companies producing consistent quality instruments. They may not be for everyone, but no one will ever say PRS lacks quality, even the SE line.

There's definitely a difference in prices of guitars made in Japan compared in different countries , that would explain why all this . That being said it's best to play with what you already have. I've had in my hands several guitars made in Mexico and I've realized how sufficient they are for most people, including professional musicians. What's important is to have a well-set-up instrument and to practice on it consistently.

@@alexdenton6586 well, that was my point. The country of origin shouldn't matter. A good guitar can come from anywhere. Buying American doesn't mean it's automatically better. People pay more to have a name on the headstock, which allows companies to charge much more, like Gibson or Fender.
But, when it comes to PRS, their American guitars are some of the best in the world, especially the "Private Stock" guitars. It comes with a heavy price, but you are getting the very best of everything, including the most exotic wood.

Well the "fit and finish" isn't perfect on the one I recently purchased brand new online. The nut is short of width which leaves the right end as you look front on at it very sharp to the touch, and there are a few frets (18-19) that are jagged and not smoothly polished off. No way was my guitar qc'd, otherwise the inspector would have rejected such shoddy workmanship. You expect much more from prs, especially as they make such a song and dance about how every guitar of theirs is finely inspected (even the se models). My advice is: if you can test this guitar out in shop and if its up to speed then buy it,and take every guitar channels praise with a pinch of salt.

@@BeastMadeReviews yeah I've always known them as a purists guitar, for someone that is especially tuned into the tonality of instruments (because obvious PRS are that good). Mr Muso himself Steven Wilson is a famous PRS guy. Just my opinion ofcourse.

@@frankbrach4920 no disrespect to PRS but I suppose it does conjure negative connotations, a muso is someone who is a very studied player, as much interested in technique and perfect sound as they are music content and emotional connection. PRS DGT US CORE is way better than Indonesian made SE. Putting DGT's name is just a marketing ploy. How many times did DGT use his Indonesian made SE??? Yeah, I thought so. And, yes, it's way cheaper. I own the US Core; worth every penny.
(P.S. And this goes for all SE's. Grab the US Core or if budget is short, the S2; no regrets. Never the Indonesian.)

Honestly, this SE is a fantastic guitar. I haven't played a USA made DGT--I'm sure they're well-worth the cost and are excellent. But the SE is amazing. So much so that I have been thinking about it daily since I mailed it back. I would love to own one.

    • @wrigman

I have owned two core PRS guitars, one being a 2012 PRS DGT standard(no maple top), a single cut 22 with a one piece maple top, a CE 22, a S2 22 standard and a SE soap bar II. The nicest ones were the DGT and Single cut 22. The CE was nice. The S2 22 was the one I didn’t like at all ( by the way the S2 line uses Indonesia electronics and US made body and necks, so they are hybrid’s.)
My SE Soap bar II is a outstanding quality guitar. Fit and finish is great. The pickups are nice sounding and work quite well. About the only thing I can think I MIGHT do is upgrade to Duncan P90’s. The Korean made SE’s are fantastic guitars. Core guitars are very nice, but, people have a hard time coming up with the money. There is no reason to be hard on those that can’t afford the core models……
      In other words………. Be nice…..

Yeah many people said the same thing about Japanese guitars in the 80s. Being made in America does not mean its better quality than a guitar made anywhere else in the world. The best Telecaster I've ever played is Japanese. In answer to your question DG has used the SE's live during testing. Maybe your Core is the best guitar for you and that is great, but personally I wouldn't spend £4,000 on any new guitar even though I can afford to do so. This SE makes so much sense for the gigging guitarist.
