I love all the Tull boxsets. He always has so much unreleased material on them plus live material and a 5.1 audio and the price is right

Some amazing stuff here! The Caravan and Bert Jansch box sets look amazing. I have every Dylan album on vinyl, but I did get the mono CD box set as well (everything up to John Wesley Harding).
It's probably a good idea to sell off the ones you know you're not going to listen to.

I think the "White Album" and the "Let It Be" Beatles box sets are the best for their full content. I was very impressed with the content and scope of the 50 'White Album" studio outtake tracks. There's a lot on there which I revisit. I have the advantage of also having a digital music library, so it makes it easier to cherry-pick what I want to hear. I think the "White Album" bonus content is much better than on "Sgt. Pepper", "Abbey Road" and "Revolver".

Pepper didn't included what the album the album would
have sounded like with Penny Lane & Strawberry fields forever added in..
Only for cd .could that happen
wouldn't fit on an.album unless it was a double then.you need more songs

    Hi Glenn.
    Cheers from germany,
    Andy ✌🏻

Sell the Beatles Box Sets. If you have any hesitation about getting rid of the music, convert the CD files to WAV format on your computer and keep lossless high res digital files. If not, just sell. Even the MONO - convert the files and you'll have the music for whenever. Cheers! - Rick

You have a great collection of box sets Glen, I think my favourite box set is the Simon & Garfunkel CD one I got for under £10 on eBay!

I like the Bluray Atmos discs in those box sets. That’s the reason I buy them.

Great video @GlenKellawayFromTheBasement - I have been fortunate to be able to have the box sets that I own. I realized your epiphany years ago.
When Led Zeppelin, by far and away my favorite band, when Jimmy Page was doing the super deluxe of each album my first reaction was buy them.
When I saw they were $200 a pop, I wasn't naive to think they were going to be cheap, I took a step back and said I am about to drop $2K plus for these to sit on my shelf. Stealing a line from Hotel California, I was about to become a prisoner of my device, and really realized I wasn't going to enjoy them.
I buy box sets that I will actually play. For the price they command, I don't want a "trophy" on my shelf.
Here are my favorite box sets I own and love, with some stories in there - in no particular order:
    * Led Zeppelin - "The Complete Studio Recordings" and "Definitive Collection" (both CD) - When I was 13 my mom bought me for my birthday The Complete Studio set, that set has gone with me through junior high, high school, college, road trips across the US, Canada, and Europe. The Definitive Collection is the 40th Anniversary in Japanese Mini-LP CD sleeves, I got this in the last year because I really wanted it when it came out, missed the boat.
    * The Rolling Stones In Mono (vinyl) - As a huge Stones fan, when ABKCO decided to re-release it, I was all over it. For me it helped complete the front half of their collection as I had the opposite of what was in the set. I find it as a work of art, I wished ABKCO would have given it the same love The Beatles In Mono got from Apple with attention to detail. I love the liner notes David Fricke provides. I literally bought a mono cartridge for my turntable to get the full effect of this record.
    * The Clash - "Sound System" (CD) - This might be the trophy box set and it's not at fault. I love The Clash, I literally find this thing amazing in the huge stereo box form. I spin my Clash vinyl more so this gets ignored a bit but all the goodies on top of all the music makes this a favorite.
    * Joe Strummer - "002 - The Mescaleros Years" (vinyl) - Unlike Sound System, I play this with higher frequency. I was in a conversation with a few friends and they were dumbfounded when I never sought out this portion of Joe Strummer's career. When I did, I was enthralled. When I caught wind this was coming out, I pre-ordered it. My expectations only accelerated when I saw Henry Rollins review on CZcams. It lived up to the hype and then some.
    * The Grateful Dead - "The Golden Road" & "Beyond Description" (CD) - I got both of these sets as high school graduation gifts and have been treasures in my collection for over 20 years. The complete studio discography of The Dead to my recollection, the HD-CD's still shine to this day as I play them still. I also love the liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres - I think he did them just going off the top of my head.
    * The Band - "The Capitol Albums 1968-1977" & "A Musical History" (Vinyl/CD) - You showed The Capitol Albums, again all you said is spot on. A Musical History is a CD collection that Rob Bowman did an excellent job with the liner notes and really curates the history of The Band from their infancy in Toronto to The Last Waltz. I took this set and listened to this as I road tripped the US back in 2020 - it truly was the perfect soundtrack to that journey.
    * The Velvet Underground - "Peel Slowly & See" (CD) - I remember being in a music store and picking this set up contemplating to buy it and the associate there got super pumped and pretty much sold me on it. At first I didn't get it and thought I was screwed, but once I did, I was blown away by the VU. The shear amount of content whether live, or single, previously unreleased material, plus all the Lou Reed material this is cherished. I almost define my musical life before and after I understood the VU.
    * Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Live At The Fillmore -1997 (vinyl) - The lone single album we can say on the list and it's hard to knock it. I agree with everything Tom said and Mike Campbell that this was the Heartbreakers at their absolute best live. I own the Petty sets "Playback" and "An American Treasure" both of those are packed with great music. What sets this apart is the goodies, the art of the set, and just the wide array of material. I love this set so much I actually bought the 3 LP and 4 CD sets because I didn't want to damage this edition for how much I was spinning it.

    Hi
You're completely right about those box sets with a lit of outtakesor rehearsals ...... but I can't resist them. That's the problem.
I hesitated for some weeks now with John Lennons Mind Games if I should buy the 2CD version or the box set and the 2LP set.
Last Friday, I was in the record store to get my copy of David Bowie's box. Rock "n' Roll Starr and the vinyl album, and there I decided to order the 2LP St and 6CD box of Mind Games
So ...... another one for the shelf after listening to all those mixes for two or three times.
I know it's ridiculous to buy those sets, but ...... I am a music junkie.😅😅
    Take care

You bring up a good point Glen I have all the Beatles boxes and paid good money for and they have sat on the shelf after a couple of plays!! I’m thinking about selling them also even though the collector in me is saying no!! All these boxes are just taking up space!!

I feel the same way about a lot of box sets, I prefer a box of studio albums. An exception is when the artist includes unreleased tunes such as many Springsteen and Dylan box sets have. I'm glad to have The Band set and great number one.

Yeah, I'm not much into box sets either, except for certain bands' live sets. I will continue buying any box set from Zappa, Rush, and King Crimson which consists mostly (if not completely) of live recordings (especially complete live shows).
Other than live recordings, I have no use for outtakes/alternate takes, snippets, demos, etc.
There is one caveat...I do rather enjoy the three Beatles Anthology releases though.
    Fun topic, Glen.

Hi Glen!!! I also don't like demos or outtakes added to reissues or boxsets, you just listen to them once andthen forget about them at all.... you a can add a live show and would be great. cheers and be well

I think the John Lennon "Imagine" box set content is better than "Plastic Ono Band". Mainly because the raw studio takes were a revelation, without the extra production. I thought the alternate takes were mostly great as well. I'm still deciding between the big box set or the 2 CD set for "Mind Games".

Wow, that's a hell of a lot of listening 😊
By the way, Seargent Pepper was before my time. Would you say if felt earth shattering back in 1967?
I think it's a nice album, but not the greatest album I've ever listened to. Maybe I don't understand it's importance ?

I understand losing the deluxe sets. I've never even listened to the complete things, I also believe you would be kicking yourself if you sold the mono box. I'm with you on the Zappa sets. There great !!! I'm a big fan of those Original Album Series box sets. 5 cd's for $20-$30.

I think I would rather listen to some Beatles out takes than some of those Band albums. I’m not going anywhere near the Mind Games boxset because I think the album is not very good. In fact I purged my copy years ago.

Nothing beats a good box set, but if it's just an expensive ornament that will never get played, maybe you should sell those. Buy something useful.
