  • #GuillermodelToro, the Oscar-winning director of #TheShapeofWater, joins #GoodOmens creator #NeilGaiman to share a list of films that provide a sense of hope in difficult times. Their picks include some of the top-rated films on IMDb as well as cult classics. The two visionary artists have teamed up with IMDb and the United Nations Refugee Agency to assemble this list and raise awareness for refugees and other vulnerable communities who have been especially effected by COVID -19. The conversation between del Toro and Gaiman explores the inherent hopefulness of films that place characters in harrowing situations. They begin by discussing #TheShawshankRedemption and the way the characters portrayed by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman manage to find solace and friendship in confinement. In #Tampopo and #BabettesFeast they find hope and meaning in the importance of sharing a meal. Despite claims of Frank Capra’s work being lighter fare, del Toro insists that #ItsAWonderfulLife finds its strength in first dragging viewers to the lowest of lows before allowing the hope to shine through. Similarly, in discussing Jean Cocteau’s #BeautyandtheBeast, del Toro describes the French filmmaker's need to overcome great difficulty in real life in order to bring beauty to the screen.
According to Neil Gaiman, #AllThatJazz also manages to make stunning art out of a traumatic situation when Bob Fosse turns his own experience into a surrealist film. Gaiman also believes that Terry Gilliam’s #Brazil is a wonderful demonstration of how one must fight hard to defeat the forces that wish to squelch one’s dreams. And on the topic of “dreams you dare to dream,” del Toro brings new color to #TheWizardofOz with a powerful interpretation of the journey at the center of the film.

the fact that Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman not only know each other but are good friends really warms my heart. A good plus is that they also seem to be friends with Stephen King.

I had the opportunity to watch Babette's Feast in a theater last 2017. I was expecting it to be controversial for an article I read a long time ago and I thought it will be like The Cook, The Wife.... but it wasn't. Perhaps I didn't comprehend what I read. Already beyond half of the film still expecting a cannibalism, witchcraft, but nothing was happening. They're just eating. Remembering.. But damn, the lights were already on. The credits were rolling. I was crying incessantly. I didn't understand why.. The film was so simple.. yet so noble. My favorite quotation from Babette's Feast is: " Throughout the world sounds one long cry from the heart of the artist: Give me the chance to do my very best." I wish you too could watch the film.

These 2 should collaborate on a dark fantasy movie or a TV series mixed with drama, horror and comedy. It would be an instant cult classic I tell yah!

It is fascinating , thanks IMDb for adding this video) And a huge thanks for Neil and Guillermo, for such an pleasant conversation. Both have an interesting choice and even more interesting descriptions about the reasons and feelings that films evoke in them. Personally, i have seen 8 of 10, and totally agreed with choice. Also I would add some other films of hope : Some like it hot, Pursuit of Happyness and The Adventures of Rabbi Jacob. 1 and 3 is light and bubbly, and more about how all things happened to you can help you to live better life. The second one is dramatic but it is a real story of success, which can give inspiration and hope to people.

I do not agree that we are ever more interconnected. I see the opposite. I feel more disconnection and indifference in the world because of Covid-19. First we saw simple physical distancing, then closing borders, lockdowns, segregation, fighting for PPEs, fighting for natural resources (for the lame excuse of sustainability), fighting for survival, fighting for democracy, and now fighting for vaccines.

    •  Před 3 lety +3

And yet here we are still fighting the good fight. Even in the face of adversity we still join together by the means necessary (digital or otherwise) to keep going.
It's so easy to lose hope, specially when you're only shown the bad parts, but, like "It's a Wonderful Life" show us, even if it doesn't seem that way, every good action you do sparks another and it helps to make the world a little better.

You know what's weird? Both these directors did Hellboy films. Del Toro did the original duology, and Gaiman did the reboot in 2019. So, to me, the fact that these two are friends and both have similar goals in their films basically proves to me that Hellboy 2019 was the way it was cause of studio interference and not really cause of Neil himself. Del Toro was not bothered with studio interference with his duology of hellboy films. That's what causes the big change in quality.
