  • "It's not like I'm jogging on those days [that I’m running] or that I'm cross-training easily. I think people underestimate what I'm doing. When I cross-train, there are puddles of sweat on the floor to the point that our recreational center has to put out 'Wet Floor' signs because I sweat that much. One time, they put an 'Out of Order' sign on my machine because they thought it was leaking. Little did they know, it was my sweat."
Florida’s Parker Valby just won the 2023 NCAA Cross Country individual championship title after a runner-up finish behind NC State’s Katelyn Tuohy in 2022. She wrapped up an undefeated 4-0 season that includes wins at the Nuttycombe Invitational, the SEC Championships and the NCAA South Regional before winning it all in Charlottesville just nine days ago. She dominated the race and covered the 6K course in 18 minutes and 55 seconds to win by just over 10 seconds.
Parker is also the NCAA Outdoor 5000m champion and owns a personal best of 15:20 for 5000m and 8:49 for 3000m.
She has drawn a bunch of attention to her training methods after telling the media that she only runs two to three days a week while cross-training a lot in between. We dive into and clarify a bit about her training. We discuss what’s got her excited for track season and we answer a few of your listener questions submitted via Instagram.

It's not just the young athletes that Parker is inspiring. Her dedication to fitness and persistence through tough times is wondrous. I'm sure I'm not the only adult that has upped their health and fitness game as they watch Parker's story play out.

So cool to see Valby succeed with cross training strategy. She could be revolutionizing the sport. Most non-runners underestimate how brutal high volume running is on the body.

Parker's races have been a hoot to watch. I didn't know who she was until a couple years ago, when she finished runner up in the NCAA 5,000 meter final to Katelyn Tuohy. That following cross country season (2022), I followed with interest. When she is in the race, it's guaranteed to be a jailbreak--no lingering in a pack.

Parker should consider triathlon down the road--it fits her "cross-training" style and she already appears to have the swimming base. The likelihood of her, or Touhy, challenging the East African is pretty low but a 2028 Triathlon medal may be possible.

LA 2028 Triathlon... the comparisons with Jorgenson are remarkable. Parker has a decade of swim training. Admittedly Jorgenson had an ex pro cyclist boyfriend / hubby. Parker can go to Paris in 5km, what an experience.. but then what? She improves from 14:45 ish (presuming she makes team) to 14:20 in 2028 & gets, 5th to several east africans... that's the best....
Yet in Parker's case her background is stellar. The strength in the cross training & the weight training. The fact is, the magic is Parker is loving not being injured yet continues to build the aerobic base (to a point) because she is relentlessly on the ctoss trainer. That is some MAGIC!
So, can she learn to ride at 40km per hour? 👍 100%.
I hope over the next 12-28 months she gets a great team around her which may be the pivot for her athletic future.

As a coach since 1981, and a daddy to a now 16 year old very fast daughter, thank YOU Parker for FINALLY giving a new, younger platform to my Wholistic Fitness © method and my “Less Is More” approach to running through your embrace of cross training! Keep crushing!

It might be strange for a runner to train 3 times per week but it's not strange for a cyclist.
When I was a teenager (many many years ago) I was running 50 miles every week (hilly) when I was about 18 years old my knees just started to hurt permanently for a few days after each run, so I took up cycling just as seriously. The way cyclists structure training is more about the rest. If you cycle 80-100 miles on a Sunday with your club ride then it doesn't make any sense to cycle on Monday. And then you just do hard rides on Tuesday and Thursday. That is a very typical cycling training week for most cyclists.
I remember when I was doing the running the mentality was just get as many miles as possible and the top guys in the world would all be around 100 miles per week (which was well above my level). But the mentality of more miles is better was ingrained in running mentality.
When I started cycling heart rate monitors were just becoming popular and cyclists would use their heart rate monitor for all sorts of things like measuring if they had recovered from a previous session. If you can get in the right heart rate zones in a training session then you should have had more rest before hand.
I went to a cycling coach once for some advice and he told me to do a 25 mile time trail effort (max effort for one hour) and then the same the next day, then repeat with one day rest in between, and then repeat with 2 days rest in between it enables you to calculate how much rest your body needs.
If any runners are still just running as many miles as possible, then they training methodologies are decades out of date.
