  • democracynow.org - The critically acclaimed independent rock band Deerhoof stops by the Democracy Now! studio to perform five songs and talk about music and politics. The influential music site Pitchfork has called Deerhoof "the best band in the world." The New York Times described them as "one of the most original rock bands to have come along in the last decade." Their new album, "Mountain Moves (Joyful Noise)," has just been released. In addition to the performance, Amy Goodman speaks with drummer Greg Saunier and vocalist and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki.

Hey, Greg! I'm glad you said TEND to be old. I'm old: 58. My friends are old too. We have all listened to Deerhoof for years. Look for the grey hairs at your shows.

These guys rock. Every member is just so talented. People are commenting that the sound mixing is off. I think they are missing the point.

I saw them in Birmingham UK once with a pretty bad sound & they were still mind blowing. This is one band that don’t necessarily need a good sound balance

IMPORTANT FLORIDA HURRICANE ADVICE: Best of all get out of Florida full stop. Use back roads to avoid traffic jams. If you can't get out in time make sure your in a concrete building. Put kids in bathtub and protect them with mattresses pillows blankets and duvets. Get gas tanks out of house. Wear cycle crash helmets, stay in center of building, stay clear of glass. Prepare non perishable food water and matches. Put important documents and phone in waterproof container, do not store fuel in your house bury it in the garden. Turn off electricity in home. Use rope to tie yourself down to concrete. Wear eye protection.

It's a shame Satomi's vocals came out so bad in this. Still, it's the best new album I've heard all year, and well worth a listen if you're actually open to see what they're like when they're on form.
There are some really awful comments on here. How depressing.

This young man seems to have decided it is age that causes the problem. Youth does that. I hope someone is able to get him to see he is stereo typing. In each age group all behaviors exist. When he is old he'll know, I just hope it happens sooner.

lol he's like 47 here. He knows what's up. I'm sure he's aware it's a stereotype. Stereotypes are often useful. And it's a true stereotype. My generation will fail the younger generation too one day, in some way. Already Gen Z is crazy intelligent. Ah well.

Yeah, much better on the albums. They have other people doing vocals occasionally and she has more of a chance to get it right... honestly I enjoy her overall presence at this point but as a vocalist, especially live.. it's really sketchy sometimes. The vocals were always what put me off before I fell completely in love with them -- because of the composition & the wide range of styles.
