Stellaris but we won't be building a Navy... ever.
I don't know if we can survive this No Fleet Challenge. We will have to face off against other empires and the crisis in order to survive!

I think World of Warships has (or at least used to) have a space battle mode in the style of “Space Battleship Yamato”/“Star Blazers”, which makes it additionally appropriate as a sponsor for Montu.
Wait, I'm supposed to make a navy before someone declares war on me?
You should do this again but then split the universe the Chinese wall challenge
@@neillindgren8992 it was a april fools event iirc
Montu: There are no threats in this universe

They are not "ARMIES", they are "Peace keepers". Peace keepers on a "special military action".

Hmm, what if there was a DLC for galactic sports competitions...
@@TheAgamemnon911 Can't wait for the peripheric Devouring Swarm Hivemind to host the Galactic Games on their Tomb world Capital.

I wish Paradox would do an overhaul of starbases and their modules.
Also do some kind of copy&paste thing where you can copy one starbase setup onto another without micromanaging yourself to death.
I miss the og battle stations you built with construction ships. Putting like 6 stations in a hyperlane choke point felt soo good.
@@grinchiestgrinch7289 how was that?
Same. I have 1 Bastion, 1 Trade Station, 1 Anchorage, and 1 that I use with special modules
@@Ahrone1586 It was long time ago, an update far, far away, well before the 2.0 Update attacked.
@@Ahrone1586 they were like today's defense platforms on crack but you could only build so many in a system because there was a minimum range they had to be from other defensive stations
Vernox Mandate: We absolutely CANNOT live on anything that moves.
Orbital Mechanics: Am I a joke to you?
Indeed, they should have said they CANNOT live on anything that moves in opposition to the stellar gravity field. I would instead say local gravity field, but I think they would leave that to the extremist factions that are unable to get out of any holes they accidentally step into, making those factions rather short lived.
Wait. You created a fallen empire for the next cycle!
Conservationist challenge may be fun. No clearing natural blockers, no terraforming non-barren worlds, Ranger Lodges on every world, no using any Megastructures that damage systems like Rings or Dysons. Just tree hugging and loving/respecting the natural worlds across the galaxy
I don't think that'd work once you unlock the ability to make gaia worlds though, or have idyllic bloom.
I do have an empire myself that played through in a way that wanted to make every world a gaia world, everyone loved them. xD
@@archmagemc3561 Than it Should be a Fanatic purifier and 55x Crisis.)
I once created a Preserver Carnivorous Hive Plantoid that only grew on Gaia worlds. I would convert huge worlds into Gaia worlds while feeding on everything that moved. Even Synthetics and Robots got eaten. (We weren't peckish) Later we became the crisis xD
Howabout no tiles as well
That's literally me every game. I restart until I get decently friendly neighbours, and then I disband my navy. The AI breaks and all of them just guarantee my independence coz I'm too "weak". Then, I just tech rush until I get battleships and then conquer literally everyone in the vicinity.
TBH you only need cruisers to conquor advanced neighbor empires since strkecraft hard counter corvettes and destroyers earlygame, and those are the bulk of AI fleets.
However with the change to ship types next patch, and strikecraft not countering missiles/torpedos anymore, idk how well that will be in the future. It'll probably still work, but you'll need to actualy use that point defense.
literally *every* game? zzzzzzzzzzz
@@archmagemc3561 point defense destroyers, chuck a few of those in and you don't need to worry about missiles
However the AI is learning the importance of bastions, and your carrier cruisers will smash against those and crumble, so artillery is necessary to an extent
Nah i always help my big empire bros when i grow up and crush the ones who were big meanys to me or my ai bros
ah yes, "the foundation" strategy. lol
for the asimov fans
Technically with mercenary enclaves you are just 'telling' xenos what to do.
This also works with federation fleets
When you accidentally pray to the wrong chaos god and suddenly start vomiting

Prays to Slaanesh for an Avatar.
Emperor save us from this heresy...
The composer of strands sounds like Tzeench tho. :D
That would be Whisperers in the Void.
Khorn being Eater of Worlds.
Slaneesh being Instrument of Desire (Also, the End of the Cycle is a nod to Slaneesh's birth)
Nurgle being the Composer of Strands.
@@ZealotOfSteal Until you make the connection that the strands being composed are those of DNA, and that grandpa is about to grant his faithful a most virulent new gift.
when he was talking bout the dark prince i was like... eh... wait? isn't composer is papa nurgle? 30 mins later everything went into right order xD
same. i made a comment about half way in like, bruh, wrong god. Then like 10 mins latter you was oops. lol
It's frustrating that star bases don't count towards navy strenght, don't give power projection, don't help you diplomatically. I feel like they should, maybe they should only count half their power or smth, but they should count for something.
- France just before WW2
You can have people declare war because your fleet power is 200, watch their wee fleet get decimated by a 4k bastion, and just shrug
I mean they don't project any power though. If you can't go out and beat someone into submission then you aren't projecting any power.
@@ruukinen That's what you think!

Me, a true Montu Plays enjoyer: begins mixing brick and mortar to begin construction of a fortress around that like button as toxic god intended
17:40 OBJECTION! The Composer of Strands is Nurgal. The Instrument of Desire is Sallenesh.
35:30 Well done. :)
The composer of strands is nurgle, not slaanesh XD
Slaanesh is the instrument of desire
Love the documentary style, feels a lot like Timelines.
37:44 Of course you get the agrarian trait immediatly after you've realised that you have to praise Nurgle. You have to garden Grandpa's garden. 😀
This works SO MUCH BETTER if you're running Expanded Stellaris traditions mod.
Before they even introduced Orbital rings, planetary ascension or buffs to defensive playstyle, you could've built a solid strategy off just you know... building stations and making them extremely hard to kill. Since some of the traditions give massive boosts to weapon range and also defensive/offensive capabilities of your stations and defense platforms.
NSC also helps
the armor modules give armor repair per day and the paradox recently fixed in-battle regen to actually work, so the poor AI keeps tossing fleet after fleet at my stations which endlessly vomit out more fighters as they struggle to even get to my station's hull, which not only has faster regen than my armor but like triple the hp.
I've done this plenty of times. You want to be hardcore, do it with fortress worlds for chokepoint control instead of star fortresses/citadels. CADIA STANDS!
Why must you hurt me this way?
it's so broken fallen empires need to focus down any planet they find and even then there likley to lose if you pick strong, resilient and dump some cash in armies

I absolutely adore this new style of video! A story-driven role play centric play through with some unique and fun challenges to boot. I can imagine it was tough to make the video, let alone play this way - but would love to see more. Really creative Montu, keep it up!
I know Montu does not usually go Psionic, but C'mon... we all know the Instrument was Slanesh and the Composer is Nurgle... heck being Nugle Cultists while looking for the TOXIC god makes just so much more sense as well.
Can someone explain all these references I have no idea what it all means
Warhammer 40k Nurgle. Look it up, too much for my thumb to write
I don't think CZcams would allow you to write it all. There's way too much someone needs to know to understand the chaos gods.
I gotta say, composer does not really represent nurgle particularly well. The other pacts can be interpreted easily as one of the ruinous four, but the composer is highly lacking in nurgle. Heck, the composer is more similar to Slaanesh and Tzeentch than to Nurgle.
Nurgle is about stagnation - by stripping away the trait picks, the player is severely limited on how much they can change of their speices.
You call it a challenge, for me it is just the usual way i play.
Basically yeah, until you become an economical and scientific powerhouse, build a mega-shipyard and become the largest military power overnight.
Me, who almost always plays alloy rush Holy Trio:
YOU WHAT?!?!?!?!?!??!
"Propulsed by the means of, well, propulsion". I choked on my breakfast, well done.
Composer of strands.
DNA experimentation.
So Nurgle.
Thus Toughness.
But for some reason you said Slanesh. Sorry that's the prince of pleasure.
AI declared the crisis as crisis? But what about whales?
These challenge videos are so cool and I really enjoy the backstories and roleplaying narration you put into them. I hope you continue making these types of videos!
If you want something a bit easier and because there is a cap to how powerful a fortress can be. You can always remove the hyperdrive and make your ships only able to move in the one system.
Very impressive stuff mate, loving this kind of content. there's a reason you're one of the biggest stellaris names out there 💪
Very impressive style, a triangle of challenge runs, roleplay, and memes, all well-edited and delivered with enthusiasm. Definitely looking forward to checking out more.
The indentured servitude bit made me chuckle. Too close to the truth.
I bought Stellaris 2 days ago after so many years i even remember playing 1.0 Stellaris and IM glad I found your channel! I love this type of challenge videos
My subterranean terravore crisis rush build uses zero fleets until menacing cruisers. He just relies on his nearly-uninvadable worlds to defend himself until he has enough unity to take Become the Crisis, polish off all the planets he's eaten down to nubs to generate menace, then he starts spitting out menacing corvettes using his insane mineral production.
Never ever saw anything about Stellaris until today, thank you so freaking much for the experience, subscribed!
this was one of my favorite ones yet, keep it up montu
Isn't composer of the strand are suppose to be Nurgle and not Slaanesh?
35:50 Welp look like he finally realize it lmao
I think you need to start as a Scholarium early on, and pump a lot of science into the galaxy, whilst becoming, well, the Galactic Illiminati, controlling things from the shadows. After your "Master" deals with the Crisis, you can then have them release you, and then become Galactic Emperor.
The composer of stands is not Slaanesh, that would be the instrument of desire. :)
Ah good, he did realise it eventually...
It fits so well with the toxic god as well
Mate, you're on a entirely different level recently. Live streams have been gold and this was the best story driven adventure yet. Well done and keep it up.
I love the narrative style of your content, it really fits a game with such long gameplay
For some reason both the Composer of Strands and Whisperers in the Void both sound exactly like Tzeentch names lol
I always play that way^^ Space-Bunkers!
Ah, hello there! You are my neighbor indeed! Do you know what's even better than a Space Bunker? Yes! More Space Bunkers! Space bunker appreciating civilizations never need to go to war with each other, they simply know what's good for them. Buy Space Bunkers, buy peace!

17:40 come one... Slaanesh is the Instrument of Desire not the Composer of Strands
Looked at some reviews and beginners guides to Stellaris cause it looked really interesting, but your story videos have sold me on the game. The role-playing just seems so fun
Awesome play. Love the RPG content too!
Odd request, but any chance you could upload your save file to Google Drive or something? Would be really fun to continue this scenario, even as stagnant as it would be!
I like this roleplaying campaigns, quite fun and entertaining
I’m actually glad you reminded me to like, I was so gripped I totally would’ve forgot

Hey! Glad you enjoyed it. If yo uncheck out the description there is a whole series of videos in this style!
Thank you for that. I'm enjoying the no research challenge right now. I'm amazed at what you're able to pull off. I play on an easier difficulty and have a difficult time every game. Your script writing and cadence is top notch, too. Keep up the good work!
Would love to see more of this
This is insane, i like it! 👍😄
The ending is like the starting setting of Attack on Titan xD
WALLS, and threats everywhere outside them.
@0:21 "we are going to be the number one without building a single ship..."
Me : so no construction ship ?
Montu : goddammit.
This was magical!
someone make a mod that adds the vernox mandate as a fallen empire, as clearly they survived a galactic cycle they qualify, and give them some custom modifiers that prevent ship building and buff the hell out of starbases.
This is one of my favorite playstyles. I support the Ai as a megacorp, give them resources and try to lead them to victory.
You know what… with the Giga and ACOT mod, this could be alot of fun! So long as your able to early rush and grab a bunch of land, probs help a ton with that fleet lag too
Yooo I thought about that too
Terraforming as many planets in chokepoints to get Orbital Rings sounds dope
I wish once starbases were destroyed you didn't have to remake them from scratch though
@@blazikem thought I replied to this awhile back but guess not, there is a mod that lets you do that, they will rebuild any starbases you lose after a fight. But if you lose a heavily defended point it’s a pain to get it back
The empire being stuck in eternal staganation is about as Nurgle as you can get
Poor Frederic is already clutching his chest in anticipation of the playthrough.
Very atmospheric video! Thank you Montu for your content. What mods do you use?
believe that's all vanilla
He turned himself in a fallen empire.
One day the contengency will die off. And they will remain stagnant empire. And new forms of lifes will reach evolution fase.
Isn't slaanesh the instrument of desire?
I thought the composer of strands was Nurgle.
Of course the readied shield would give you troubles XD
35:45 Malavites be like: "The moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, I disgusted be. I crave the resilience of that what is rotting. I aspire to the certainty of decay."
Turns empire into a scab in the universe. Unscratchable.
I was expecting lots of maginot worlds...
but I forgot that's not actually a vanilla mechanic xD
well, asteroid artillery would've been pretty fun that game too I'm sure.
I love the evolution of Vernox propaganda from "theres no logical way to fight galactic wars" to "these other empires have navies, but those seem pointless" to "no other empires have ever existed, what are you talking about"
Made me get up and try this on my Xbox. Shame I don’t have overlord yet
So that's how stagnant ascendancies are made!
And thus a new fallen empire is born, waiting for the next cycle of the galaxy...
Hmm, this is how fallen empires are made
I mean, sedentary really fits this empire.
dude just created a straight fallen empire, without the empire.
It was so funny, i was doubting the Warp like composer should be nurgle right? But you were so confidently proclaiming your Nation worshipping Slanesh xD you had me convinced
The Composer of Strands is actually Nurgle. The Instrument of Desire is Slaanesh.
I didn't know defensiveness can be that powerful in vanilla.
I imagine millions of organic species falling back into the protected zones and later liberating the galaxy.
I was going to say you built the Bentusi, but then I remembered the rigged super acolytes.
Montu, calling Composer of Strands aka Nurgle(though with less bacteria and more of weird Dark Eldar experimentation aftertaste) as Slaanesh: tomato, potato \/(-_-)\/
Does Montu have the full steam for games like this? Cause I got the itch and need moooooooooore Montu!
"The strongest deffence is a swift and decisive offense" -obiwan kenobi
Oh, so this is where those Blackstone fortresses came from
This story would be crazy if this is what happens in universe. Especially calamity.
And now a patch, that give a starbase in a pulsar system more armor then shild because of -100 % to shields.
This should be called an Albania build. Just bunkers everywhere.
Makes me wonder how lathland was able to keep 25x prethoryn in containment with only starbases.
Isnt composer of strands nurgle and instrument of desire slaneesh?
17:42
Looked further into the video he realized his mistake
Propulsed by some means of... .propulsion. Who would do such a thing?
easier idea:
Go progenitor hive
Make a puppy bulwark with lots of fleet power and permission to reintroduce them into the empire, make them loyal and friendly btw with garrisons, etc.
Now the funny part. After every war reintroduce them to the empire, then make 1 planet from the rest into another empire.
You can this way at end-game have HUGE empires. Just make sure to always fight on the side the bulkwark is on.
No planets?
Build a habitat, cut off the starbase by demoting it, then while rebuilding it, make it a new sector and create vassal and viola, you have a 1 star vassal.(honestly, you should be able to select sectors anyway, so i don't think this is exploiting, it is just making progenitor more reliable.)
So yeah, you can do it in another way.
Btw I'm pretty sure the Composer of Strands is Nurgle. Instrument of Desire would be Slaanesh 🙂
Edit: Also, loved that Twilight Imperium shout out with the Sardakk Norr at 22:05
and they became the next ancient civilization of another game
This is my regular playstyle

Fun fact, Viipuri is an old city the nation of Finland lost to the Soviet Union in the second world war. It's correct Finnish pronounciation is Vee-pu-re where the R is rolled. One can also call it Wyborg, however.
I thought the composer was Nurgle? and the Instrument of Desire was Slaanesh?
oh, you did address that lol
