In this video I'm enlarging a hole in a pulley form 3/4" to 7/8" using a round column milling machine. I also make a suitable replacement for a Coaxial Centering Indicator.
Very nice innovative ways to get the project done......necessity is the mother of invention.....refreshing to see someone using their skills to solve a problem rather than just throw $ at it and buy a premade. As a machinist and gunsmith for over 45 years, this is a prime example of old school problem solving at its best .Great job, hope many learned to use their noggins instead of just buying something......Keep up the great content !!!!

Very innovative, that indicator holder took a short time to make, but it'll give you a real lifetime of usefullness. and boy is that keyway tool slick or what!
I reckon the number of jokes around a "boring head", over the years must exceed the the number of dollars the 1% have. The use of the dial gauge vs 3/4 rod to align the centre was a great illustration of run out on cold rolled rod. Nice work, keep the good things coming!

Great vid. Years ago I worked in a 65 man maintenance shop. Had a couple of butcher machnists wanta bees. Several times they got caught not making a key way deep enough so just ground the key to fit. Next guy who worked on it would have a fit. I was a sparky and had some end mills to make adjustable switch brackets. Would piss some of these guys off when I did this work on overtime.
I'm fairly sure mine is the same (metric). I just got lazy... I didn't feel like figuring out the graduations. Thanks, that gives me a good starting point.
Have you done a video on your keyway tool? Id really like to see that. I lack broaches too and just a month ago, I opened up the ID in a hand wheel and filed in a new keyway...ugg! Your tool is sooo much better than that! I'll need to add a new keyway to a motor bell soon and I'd really like a better way than a file! If you haven't made a video on it, I think there are tons of hobby machinists that would find this useful.

Great work thanks. I a just finished making a broaching tool and a quill locking clamp so you have justified my efforts. I have a coaxial dial indicator and have hardly use it because it takes up a fair bit of room so on my Busy Bee mill it usually does not fit with work held in the vice. Some times it use a dead center in the quill to line up a hole or use the boring bar as a crude dial indicator. I always learn some thing new from you efforts and gain a bit more confidence so thank you and have a good one.

It was one one of ur ideas for storage? I'm interested to learn what ur job was in a previous time? U have A LOTTA SKILLS MAN.. Thanks for your great comment. I worked in printing all my life. Mostly working on or running a web offset press. These presses were huge and had a 2 webs (roll paper) either 32" or a single web 70" wide. The last 15 yrs before I retired I worked as an engineer designing improvements in problem areas. I have no education as an engineer,.... just experience and creativity. For about 10 years it was fun but the last 5 years I was faced with all the impossible problems. I was glad to retire.
@@WinkysWorkshop As I understand it (not a machinist myself) the graphite in cast iron is an excellent lubricant by itself, and the addition of any kind of liquid only serves to turn it into sludge. Sorry, I know I heard it on CZcams, and by several different machinist tubers, but I can't recall who all they were, or where. It was hinted at more than said outright, like a throwaway reference to an accepted wisdom.
@@M_Northstar I just read a little about the topic. You were right, cast contains some graphite. I also read that coolant or oil can be used to increase tool life to a small degree and also to keep the dust down. So apparently it's not really needed but doesn't hurt either. And thanks for asking, I learned something!
I like that keyway cutter! There is a video on boring bar geometry grinding, i thing it was Tom Lipton or Keith Fenner, It changes the center line on the tool face and works well.
Yeah, if you make your own boring bar or fly cutter you have to consider this but the brazed carbide and insert bar are designed to compensate for this. Thanks
09:00 Dumb question from someone who doesn't know better. If you filled the keyway with something of roughly equal hardness would that make boring any easier since it would no longer be an interrupted cut? You'd have to be able to remove what ever filler piece you put in there I realize. It appears you were able to make the cut without any problem. So is it worth the trouble or a non-starter?

This tune u finished with is one so many use but I'm defo sure there are websites where u can get ur hands on some free to use music for ur videos if it interests u my friend.. I will look it up for u at the weekend if u want and get back to u with some information.. U may not be at all interested but if u are it's a good idea if u like to use a bit of music now and then..
Mark i feel the pain when you don't have enough length on the boring bar. Ask me how I know ? Especially when your are boring a small hole and the smaller boring bares aren't long enough. That is when HSS boring bars come in handy. Thanks for the video
When you said you had .0095” to go, then you adjusted the indicator by a little less, you should have made the hole too big. Cuts on both sides. Why didn’t it?
They came with my mill which I bought used. The first time I used them I noticed the top and the bottom narrow surfaces were not square to the larger flat sides. They were off a bunch... like .060 in 1.25". Fortunately the V's were square to the larger faces so it was an easy fix but I was shocked that anything made for doing machine work could be that far off.
Centering the wheel on the mill... What about using a 3/4 drill bit? Any little deflection of the drill bit indicate "not centered". Using the boring bar.... You have no 7/8 drill bit?..... Too much for the machine? Well done anyway!
A drill world have worked although I would still need to drill under size and bore the hole. Or use a reamer but I didn't have a reamer. Drill never drill an accurate hole. Also the keyway might have deflected the drill.

Mark, I have the metric version of that boring head. It has a 0.5mm feed screw. The index marks are accurate too.

That's a good idea but the boring bar works fairly well. A drill would be a problem with the keyway.
