Penpot - what's coming next and why it's exciting - CEO interview

- I sat down with Pablo, the CEO of Penpot and we discussed their future plans, most recent funding rounds, AutoLayout, Figma-gate, Adobe and a lot of other topics. I'm really excited about the future of Penpot and open source design tools in general. I'm not going to switch from Sketch, but I plan to use Penpot alongside it - and likely it will become my main teaching tool in the future. Let's explore what Penpot has to offer!
Especially with the most recent Figma acquisition by Adobe, it's important to take a look at other, competing tools in the design, prototyping and collaboration space. I will continue to do it this year.

I checked Penpot out after the tragedy and I loved it. And since it's Open source so it's pretty much guaranteed to stay free.
That too - but the approach also allows for some different perspectives on how to solve problems which is great :)

The inspiration position to invite participation from people who's voices are so often missing in the FOSS world is so important.
I hope to be able to work with the penpot team on trying to push SVG standards work forward. Inkscape has found it very difficult convincing browsers to take svg seriously and to back SVG 2.0 without stripping everything good out of it. More design tools using SVG would help.
I am using penpot since its inception (when it was uxbox) and likes its github responses towards suggestions, repoting bugs and all. I love how its evolving slowly.

Thank you so much for sharing, Michał! I'm sold on Penpot 🥰 I used Figma because of collaboration but eliminating the need for a handoff and facilitating that communication with devs? Super golden!
I would also love contributing with Spanish for Latin America and help my Central American people get into design. At least for Guatemala and El Salvador, websites are rare and many pretty outdated. There are some apps but I'd love to see what we have in the US going on on our sites over there too 🤞

Good thing Adobe acquired Figma as it will spark even more innovation from the competition now.
My level of excitement is rising a lot I don’t event know what to say, can’t wait for it to release all the features in the future so we design our projects without problem, thanks Michal for the interview with him.

I will definitely be doing penpot tutorials in a while, there are some small bugs/glitches there still that will likely be gone soon and then I'll jump right in - likely in 2-3 weeks :)

It’s amazing and synchronous that I was just about to research Penpot in hopes to find a dialogue about it. I’m so glad to have subscribed to your channel because when I opened CZcams, this interview was the first on my screen! Thank you for giving back to the designer community
Also, with Penpot being open source there’s more opportunity for diverse feedback on a broad scale, which will help Penpot grow quickly.

it's really interesting how penpot wants to create a user friendly system for both designers and developers to communicate and work together on projects without having to stop for just maybe call to ask about a little teeny tiny thing that would waste a lot of time ..
I'm really wondering how would this work. it might be the future of tech industeries if they nailed it right !
I'm imagining maybe something like Discord voice chat channels where developers and designers join to talk together and explain what should be done!
I don't really know if this is a good idea actually .. but just an imagination of a designer 😅
anyways i really wish them the best and waiting for new awesome updates to be implemented so we can try it out and give our honest feed back

This is going to be an interesting space - some ideas here like self deployment and open standards for all exporting will mean much faster collaboration for sure.
As a developer and recent Figma user this is some fresh air. Would love to see a project based in open standards like PenPot take off 🚀 Still some important catch up to do!

Was that Elevator in the Bhurj Khalifa by any chance ? xD It's god send &heaven blessed tools such as penpot that make a designer stuck in a coder's body feel at home & balances the scales . and to top it off, my country's failing economy can't get in the way of open source tools... and lastly, but most dear to me is the cross compatibility, and a glimmer of hope that at some point i will be free of the mysery of working with EPS gradients in the likes of inkscape,.. I hope tobe able to make some small contribution of some sort to the project./ All the best to both of you, and MIcal, sincere gratitude for all the love & wisdom you have been dishing out as of late.

I don't think they're on the stock market (yet) ;-)
To be fair, whoever followed Figma's investment rounds and the fact they were burning through money with no clear picture of solid monetization-it was either Figma shutting down the shop, or them being bought by: some would say Apple, some would suggest that Adobe, others would have other suggestions. Either way, it meant the end of Figma and was just a disaster waiting to happen within a year or so… The signs were all there loud and clear.
Yes, I've been talking about that for almost 2 years and people were calling me crazy ;)
do you think the potential upcoming recession made a lot of people nervous at Figma? Anyway, $20B is around 40% of Twitter's price tag by Elon Musk. This is nuts!
@ it'd also mean less people that'd be able to afford extra subscriptions, so a little more generous free-tier or self-hosting option may be the boon they need.

I hope a mobile app is coming for both Android and iOS. Being able to check mobile designs on actual devices is crucial.
Being open source someone can simply code an app like that, doesn't have to come from Penpot itself :)

For me it would be important to have an official desktop app version of penpot.
A wrapper app (like Figma's desktop app) already exists for Penpot as a community project :)

I really like the focus on Design & Dev. With my main excitement being the Dev portion
Adobe has waaay to much focus on Design only
That's why XD lost out
Figma will get injected with all the designery Adobe CC stuff and have no focus or link to Dev

Why did investors fund it? Do they not expect profits out of it? This was the reason Figma was sold right?
In a way because Penpot will have paid plans too - but the opensource nature will ensure there will be a free plan always and a possibility to self-host it - thus having zero costs. Investors see a potential in this market - simple as that :)

It is an interesting idea but with Penpot you don't need blockchain as you can install your own instance of the cloud and run it yourself for free :)
@@MalewiczHype That's correct. What I specifically omitted to mention was the single point of failure issue.
Well if you run your own instance then you're not dependant on their servers. And of course yours can go down too ;)
