  • Where do expats live in Lake Chapala?
Lake Chapala, Mexico - International Living Countries
    Ajijic
Two quaint towns, Chapala and Ajijic (ah-hee-heek) support most of the expat population, with Ajijic holding the edge when it comes to numbers. Both communities are nestled along the lake's shoreline and separated by only a few miles. Lake Chapala itself is actually a volcanic crater lake or caldera.

If you're over 65, it'll be cheaper to rent than to buy. You'd be lucky to have 15 good healthy years left.

I agree. I’m 63 and my husband is 72. People always ask why we don’t buy, because we can afford it, but the math doesnt add up to us.
We kind of like earning interest on the money we made selling our house in the U.S.
      We rent for $850.

@@kimhicks4781 I understand that, and this is our first time renting in our 40 years married. But, I’m still on the fence about buying here.

I have lived in Ajijic for a total of 3 years and moved to Mazatlan, on the beach, but didn't like it. Came back to FL in October of 23 but will returning to Ajijic around July 3. I found renting is by far cheaper. El Dorado is first class and only about 1800 to 2300 a month. Then moved to a 3000 sq foot place in Upper Chula Vista for 2100 that included gardner, internet, and a really nice maid 3X per week. All were beautiful and furnished and super safe. It might sound high priced but try South Florida....I came back and am paying FAR more for FAR less. As far as buying, I never understood why anyone would buy anywhere in Mexico...you will never sell it...just my take.

Ha, ha! The prices are higher in some popular areas, but certainly the outlaying areas remain economical, too, so it's better to look toward areas that will be pulled into the community AFTER it grows a bit more. If Ajijic is expensive, Jaco is a bit less and further around the lake it can be much cheaper, etc.
