  • Moving Snow in April and Some Discussion. Spring in Minnesota has been a little brutal. We still have a lot of frost in the ground and too much snow. The corn planters and the John Deeres won't be rolling for a while the way it's looking right now.

    I farm corn and soybeans in the very tip of the eastern panhandle of WV 60 miles and a world away from DC. Re: your comments on tileing remind me of my discussions with some folks about GMOs that don’t even know what those letters are short for. I agree about opinions but as you stated at least know what you are talking about. BTW sold about 40 % of corn remaining in bins Tuesday. Sometimes better to be lucky than good! Weather here 50s yesterday, 30s today, 60s tomorrow, snow on Saturday! That is about 30 day’s later than the norm. Great vids. Keep it up!

    It's proper for the media to allow op-ed articles but it's also the medias (Star-trib) responsibility to avoid printing unequivocally false information. Had that article been directed at any company or individual the author and Star-Trib would be heading to court for a libel or slander lawsuit.

    I spent 20+ years driving across the US to spend as much of the summer with friends, who cash crop in Southern Ontario, Canada. Best work / vacation ever. Learned a lot for those folks. I believe you guys were quite clear and correct about farm tile, seen the erosion where the tile was missing and they shared the cost for fertilizer with me, don't want to lose a drop of that stuff if you can help it. Best of luck with prices this year ... funny, the guys who wear the ties make the money VS those that do the work ... not right.

    Good little chat, and of course the farmer will take the blunt of it. The general public doesn’t realize that the farmer is the only person that doesn’t put a price on their own products, We take our crops to the elevators and mostly say what will you give me. Also the farmer is the only persons that pay freight both ways. We pay to get our supplies coming and pay to take our end products away. The public you have a nice supper tonight and start buying Made in U.S.A. Again. It’s the only way we can save this country.😎

    We were trying to get our corn planted but fertilizer tubes kept freezing, the trash whippers couldn't handle anything over 6 inch snow drifts, and the openers kept cracking when they hit frozen clods. the field cultivator only did good enough to scratch the ice off the snow. So I dont think there will be a very good stand, so prices should be raised.

    We are totally dry on the High Plains of Texas for the last 6 months. Wish you-all could send us several feet of snow. Our optimum planting date is May 10th to June 1. Last year we had an inch of rain and foot of snow on April 30th.
    I remember the January 1980 Russian grain embargo. It cost me 30 cents / bu for corn the next morning and more in the days after. consumers were thinking farmers should get less because $3.00 wheat was too high. I remember that large grain handlers were paid for their losses.

    • @robertreznik9330

      That was when Russia invaded Afghanistan. President Carter was trying to punish Russia and support the consumer because bread had just gone up from 19 to 29 cents a loaf. The Russians then started producing and importing more wheat in Ukraine and Russian areas along with South America. That was the start of the farm crisis and American Farm Movement. We need free trade but it is not easy when so many want more.

      Prices for corn have mostly recovered. Beans getting there. The problem with steel in America is that due to our higher wages, taxes, and regulation it makes it harder for MN mines to compete with Brazil, Australia, and Chinese ore. The MN mines feed all of the mills and industry in the east. When the Mines ceased look at what happened to Ohio and Michigan. Also the Ore that we have left is lower grade and requires more refining to separate the rocks. In Brazil and Australia you can almost take a rock and its pure Iron. We used all of our due to WW2 production.

    Only problem with tiling was the past. Years ago you could tile a wetlands and drain them. MN has lost a vast majority of the wetlands in southern MN due to farmers draining wetlands after WW2. My Grandfather did exaculay that in the late 50s when he drained most of the wetlands for fields when the county put ditches in. Now today with working with the DNR and Ducks Unlimited some have restored. Today the regulations on tiling make it almost impossible to drain wetlands or even low spots in a field that might hold water. What causes waters to be polluted is runoff from fields not tiling. Something the new Buffer is working to correct. Also the crazy storms we get every year now.

      Farmers care about the land more than most people. People in the cities want their grass green and put so much fertilizer on the lawns with most of it being washed into storm drains, then into lakes. Times that by the amount of people doing it and it is just as big as the runoff from some fields. If farmers dont care about their land then they dont make money. Its their job to care.

      OK, I'm still not finding an explicit document that states exactly what the limitations and requirements are for field drainage. I would expect something like the detailed catch limits that the DNR puts out every year. Instead I found rules and regs that state that you must have a permit *if* you are draining your property, and a brochure that describes responsible tiling practices. Found Here: www.bdswd.com/Rules_Intro.html Here: www.bdswd.com/Programs_Conservation_Drainage.html
      Since neither of these describe limits to field tiling in explicit terms like total acres drained and cu. ft. volume of discharge, or even limits on particulate levels permitted, I'm starting to agree with Andersen that field tiling is not regulated in the state on MN. In fact, after reading this: www.revisor.mn.gov/rules/?id=7041&version=2014-01-22T10:14:29-06:00&format=pdf it would seem that MN relies on federal Clean Air Act rules to cover the regulation of field run off.
      So, I don't want to be contrary, and I certainly understand that you're in the respectable position of earning a living for your family while also finding your livelihood under attack. But I like your channel and I want to see you continuing the real, fact-based, honest discussion. And in this case it would see that the facts reveal that farming runoff from tiling is not regulated nearly as strictly as something like discharge from mining or other industries.

    • @goodsirminnow
      @goodsirminnow Před 6 lety

      Yes! Thank you! I can see now that a few lines in that paragraph is considered "regulation" by most in the biz. However, I think that Dennis Andersen probably expected something a bit more extensive. For example, here's the general regulations for mining www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=cbb3de2695690bb75aab6eb27d17ccc2&mc=true&node=pt40.32.436&rgn=div5#se40.32.436_1102
      There's a lot more specific detail in those mining regs that has resulted as a necessity for the managing all the different types of ores mined. Perhaps ol' Denny is wondering why farming doesn't have at least a closer equivalent to the regulations for other industries? In his mind tiling really isn't regulated. But I think that farm drainage isn't the practice to go after. A focus on nutrient runoff recapture technology would be better. Thanks for the discussion! I'm checking out here.

    Hey Zach (or Zack?), how do you avoid pulling up gravel with the snow blower? Also tariffs in general are a cancer to the free market.

    4/11/18 UPDATE: Just watched weather and solar predictions on YT Oppenheimer Ranch Project that dovetails nicely with you. They're reporting farmers using a combine to harvest snow! ? Is that something you'll consider? Iowa soil at 16* Yikes. Do you test soil temps yourself? Prayer anyone?

    If you are economically unable to plant crops for harvest this year due to the looming trade war, can you plant cover crops or cover crop mixes in their place with NRCS/EQUIP grants to maybe recoup the loss in future harvest years?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      swimmerjaxon No, because of multiple reasons. First, EQIP needs to be approved over 12 months ahead of time, and it's a multiple year contract, and it isn't enough to do more than cover a lot of the cost of doing it. Also, payments need to be made and forward contracts need to be filled, so we need the crop. I'd love to see what a year of solid cover crops could do though!

      Thanks for the reply. I was interested because I had watched a few of your videos where you talk about them. Its unfortunate that many of the grants you have to apply that far ahead of time, if only we all had a crystal ball to know what we will need well ahead of time.
      Best of luck with your season, I hope you thaw out soon and get the warmer weather you need to plant.

    How come the white semi never gets put inside and does it start in the cold winter days

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      Jason we haven't sold any corn for 6 weeks now, and we don't have the room for it inside right now so I keep it under the leg and pull the keys so nobody steals a load from us!

    Zack, there no way China can not afford to get away from buying r beans ,even if they get it from Brazil or Argentina.so I suggest farmers in ate country plant less to stabilize the price here, your comment... rotate to 🌽 or either crop

    How do you know how much frost is in the ground?

    • @MillennialFarmer
      @MillennialFarmer  Před 6 lety

      Pete Busch well, the water lines are freezing at 6 feet deep, and I know historically how much we end up with during winters like this. We have nearly 4 feet of ice on a lot of the lakes, so we have more than that in the soil.

    The prices on corn seams like they have always been too low for the farmer for along time it is sad when everybody thinks the farm makes alot of money !
