  • Zindzi Mandela is the youngest daughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. She has long been involved in South Africa’s freedom struggle and is currently serving as South Africa's ambassador to Denmark. In this frank interview with journalist and former BBC South Africa correspondent Allan Little, filmed live at the 2018 Edinburgh International Book Festival, she discusses growing up in the shadow of such a great man and the impact it has had on her own life and that of her children and grandchildren.

I remember seeing this exact very event in Edinburgh where I live in 2018. I was profoundly shocked to find out about her death in 2020. I'm so filled with luck that I was able to thank her personally and her family for improving South Africa and, indeed, the world in the manner that they did.

Perhaps it's about time that children learn how dangerous their parents can be. Zindzi has passed on my condolences to her family - but her legacy depends on who is telling it. My observation of the ANC core people might prick a pink balloon - perhaps time to process the fact that controlled information is the mother of all evil.

How about the legacy of the shameful men/women who created and supported the apartheid government? How about all the black South African children mercilessly murdered? Let's be objective and impartial in all of the reassessments.

You should understand that she had a different childhood, she experienced apartheid inside her home unlike many of us. You should understand that the hatred was meant to come back every now and then. She was not her father, she had her own experience of suffering in the hands of "White" apartheid government
