Honestly, the roughest part of sleeping in a car isn't the cold. It's the heat and humidity during the summer. Unless you want to waste gas and have your ac blasting for 5-8 hrs
Fr, the cold you can deal with, the heat you really can't
And in my area you cant just leave the windows for a draft or you'll be eaten alive by bugs
This. You can put on layers and slip handwarmers into nooks but there is no way to escape the heat if you are just stuck out there
@@mctripleAmaybe a set of those patio magnetic screens on the outside?
Heat is brutal but for me it was the psychological torture of feeling like I'm surrounded by metal and have no space to do anything. It really starts to get mentally draining.

When I slept in my car for a year after the Marines, I used a military sleeping bag. Get any bag that is rated to the temperature you expect it to drop to and you'll be fine.
Bingo! Last year I got a sleeping bag that was rated for below zero I think. Was still comfy and cozy in the ND winter.

In California that would be classified as a luxury home that goes for 10.5 million or 10k a month in rent. Living the dream.
The word luxury has really been dumbed the fuck down. Its obvious that the middle class was never meant to exist. Apparently 99% of us are supposed to live in decrepit conditions just like the middle ages while all the rich folk get to live in large. I look at most of these so called luxurious condos in South Florida and most of them are fucking empty. It makes no sense to me how a landlord can raise rent so unbearably high that people have to live in their cars and all their buildings are persistently empty.

if i ever end up in a situation like this, i'll at least know it's doable. im sure people in the same situation as you definitely see you as a motivation to move forward :)
I've done this it sucks
Met a young guy who lived in his car for 2 years because he was physically abused at home and left. He said the winters were brutal as he would have to wake up every couple of hours to warm up the car. Eventually he saved enough to get an apartment. Life's unpredictable.
I sleep better in my car then hotels
I think it's because it's tight and cozy like a tent
I lived in a Honda CR-Z (2 door hatchback) for like 3 months. It was a lot worse than his setup because I could not lay down. This was right at the beginning of the covid pandemic. It was just rough but it was what I could do.
It takes about a month to adjust to this. You're body won't like it at all at first. Once you get a few things to make yourself more comfortable like a cooler to keep stuff cold, butane cooker for hot meals, air mattress if you are fortunate enough to have an suv, window covers for privacy, and maybe some outdoor stuff like a canopy, chair, and a music box for your phone you can feel like the world is your back yard, bathroom and kitchen, and your car will feel like your bedroom and living room. I don't know about you but I can't do this in a hot ass environment. Getting heat is always easy because your car is perfectly insulated but getting air conditioning would require you to have to run the a/c pretty much constantly and idling your engine is both bad for the car and expensive. I certainly don't want to sit in heat sweating my fucking balls off constantly. Living in a car is already so uncomfortable to begin with why would you want to also be sweaty.
Wish you peace and strength

Keep up the good fight brother. I partially lost my house in the 2017 fires & completely in the subsequent 2018 mudslides. I lived in hotels as long as insurance would cover it, then my car & eventually I was able to leave the area after all the government & insurance paperwork was finally completed just shy of 3 years later. I’m finally back in a home again but I had to leave the state to be able to afford one even with insurance “covering” the loss.
Jesus fucking Christ I don’t even know what to say. I’m so sorry you experienced all this. I’m glad you’re in a place now, but just more to be fearful of. Can’t even trust that your own home is safe. 😣
I'm not saying you're dumb or anything, this is a genuine question. Why did you stay in hotels and not get an apartment or something like that? Hotels are super expensive for anything long term.
@@brutusthebear9050 hotels stays were covered by insurance for basically 90 days per disaster, or for a total of approximately 180 days. I don’t remember the exact number of days they authorized but 180 is close. So, I was not paying for the hotel stay, my insurance was & I had to provide receipts for reimbursement, there wasn’t just a lump sum payout. I submitted hotel stay receipts daily at first. I was also still paying for my home & insurance as if it still existed the entire 3 year period, so that I would not default on my mortgage, or lose the ability to file an insurance claim. I had to wait on the federal, state & local governments to finalize their disaster response before the insurance loss claim could be finalized. Having originally filed a claim for damages from the fire was not even finalized when the landslides occurred approximately 3 months later. I did ask about getting a rental instead of staying in a hotel, my insurance policy would not cover a rental even though it would have been cheaper. They told me I was welcome to get an apartment but that I would fully responsible for that cost & I would still have to pay for the existing mortgage, monthly insurance premiums & my deductible only once the disaster response was finalized, but that my deductible payment could be subtracted from the final payout once the claim could be finalized. Hopefully that explains it well enough to understand; but if not I apologize, even after surviving it all I still don’t understand all the loop holes & catch 22’s that intertwined between corporations & the government. I can definitely verify that they are not there to protect the people/public/consumer but are there to protect the insurance corporations & government.
@@brutusthebear9050he said that insurance covered it they probably didn’t cover an apartment since that’s a long term arrangement with a lease and all that stuff
@@brutusthebear9050 yeah insurances usually have super strict requirements. And cut offs. They said “as long as ins would cover it” - probably something like 90 days, where landlords of apartments are not handing out 3-month leases
Yesss when I finally found a comfortable way to sleep in my car I was SO happy. Some people don’t know how blessed they are
Just a tip: if you take off your clothes it’ll be warmer in the sleeping bag. That way more of your body heat stays in the bag (idk how exactly but it works)

I drink water from lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls I just add a half of table spoon of bleach to 5 gallon container. I eat ramen noodles and canned tuna that i mix in a plastic bag. I wish I had a bed and a hot shower of my own God that'd be nice but I can't afford rent right now. I've been doing this for over a month now I feel more at peace then I ever have been. While some people choose to live in their car just because they really want to do so, I'd say the majority of people who live in their car do so as an affordable alternative to doing something else they'd rather do. how did you manage to drive so much with basically no income for things like gas, insurance, food etc? im asking because I see people say travel etc but you can’t travel on hope.
ive been in a car for over a year now, what are some things i could do to make it a bit more fun?
My wife and I lived in a car for like 6 months, then another car(smaller) and then finally a van, did that for 6 more months, finally got an opportunity to have an apartment with my brother and I moved in, been working steady. Van/car life is hard, but there’s also this pull I still feel cause I was in that mode for so long I still get a weird feeling every once in a while that I miss it, but I am blessed to have what I have now. I just remember every time we find something useful for van life, or every time we upgrade some minor thing, how much joy it brought us. It’s a feeling you can’t get in regular life, and not everyone can do it.
I miss my youth. Living in a van traveling with friends in your early twenties is highly recommended xo
Good on you my guy! Hope you have a great adventure and remember every where is home!

Your back seats might fold down too. Might be a little more comfortable instead of piling things under you. Also, the air matress might cause you to be cold if you don't have proper insulation between you and the matress.
The air mattress makes you cold if it’s on a cold ground or floor
I had a 2006 Ford Fusion for a while. The back seats fold down to open up trunk access. It's easy to miss because the releases are inside the trunk and to either side. They're so hidden I had to look up where to find them. Thankfully the car I have now has the releases next to the headrests for ease of access.
Air is the best insulator 🤔 😅
Space blankets are great - block drafts, one way vision, fold to almost nothing, hold in heat and can deflect sun rays. But they do make a crinkly noise.
@@mixtersushiI have a 2017 Fusion. The moved the release to be next to the headrests like one would expect.
That looks so comfortable and cozy omg I wish I could do this
I got a Woods heritage sleeping bag -25 degrees Celsius. The canvas material helps keep the cold air out. It’s big and bulky but because it’s big I can put a normal size sleeping bag inside to layer it up so it’s even warmer. Try layering your sleeping bags just like you would layer your clothes in the winter. Hope this helps
Had to live in my car back in 2021, know the struggle. Biggest plus was no rent
I did this 35 years ago and I am thankful these days people are not cutting you down as much for sleeping in a car. It's just a metal tent. 🤘
Boy man I don't know about that I'm in the same situation and Ian cussed at things thrown against my window stores make comments. I honestly feel this life is hated your looked at like scum
