WE RENOVATED AN OLD PIG BARN! (A tour of our lamb barn 2020): Vlog 258

- Part Two of our farm tour series!
You see me over here all the time with my graduated (weaned) lambs. Whether I'm feeding, weighing, shipping or hanging out with some of the cool kids (Billy)... this place is one of my favourites on the farm.
We renovated this former pig barn back in 2011 when we decided to jump into sheep farming.
A simple design, that in the end, works so much better for finishing lambs than raising sheep.

LOVE having tours of your farm!! It gives us another view of your world, a new understanding. I LOVE it!!! Thanks for sharing this with us!!
My days are complete with Sandi and her sheep!!!
Shouting from the back. The old cow barn should be a Ram Barn. The boys should have their own space.
Oh my goodness, seeing that pasture drone footage, with Ellie, made me remember that video when you took Jersey home and Ellie ran out to every corner of the pasture bellowing for her Jersey friend. That was pretty pitiful! 💙
Love seeing all those growing up babies, love billy🐑🐑🐑❤️❤️❤️❤️
Omg love you guys and this channel gets better each and every time please keep them coming really enjoy seeing the sheep and your day to day things be lost without these videos please be safe and take care guys
If you change those incandescent light bulbs to LED'd, you would get much brighter light and a significant break on the electric bill as LED's use way less energy. I was an electrician that did a ton of work in my later years for power companies working on energy conservation.
Yes! And it's better for the environment too. :)
Y'all have some great plans for the farm! Maybe in a few years you can fix up that old house, then put it on Airbnb for people who want to come visit there. Have a day with the sheep kind of thing. Especially if your brand is able to grow to the point of being able to do direct to consumer sales with lamb and wool products... maybe part of it could be your farm store. You never know!
Just me getting a giggle abut Sandi saying she's thinking about a ram lamb or ewe lamb pen for the old barn and knowing that she turned it into a retirement home for some special girls
Thanks to you and other rural you tubers for your inspiration to grow my own channel! ❤️
My Cluttered Garage congratulations i will subscribe to you
Sandi, yes that would be a great idea to turn that into the new ram pen with pasture, save on the feed bill. Maybe
Sandi.
I like the tour of the old barn and the best part was to hear your thinking of how you could up grade and turn things around and use the old barn to grow more. Great going.
Take Care Be Safe Alway's Around all Farm Equipment.
11:38 - Sandi : "... easy to clean"
11:45 - Lamb: " I concur"
Sandi, put some 2x6 lumber on the inside of the post in the back of the lean to to keep the bales from falling over. Then you could side the outside without the bales pushing out the wall.
There is so much more to sheep ranching than I ever thought likely. Thank you for your detailed explanations. I wish you well and safe passage through these difficult times. John from Louisville.
You have really gorgeous eyes. I typically focus on the adorable sheep, but seeing how much excitement was on your face from talking about your barns really made them stand out.
-end of awkward but sincere comment.
I LOVE THE NEW RAM/Billy HOME IDEA!!! I love old Barns!! I live in Ohio and we have old broken down barns everywhere I always dreamed of making a coffee table book of black and white photos of them with a little history of each barn! LoL
I think using it for the rams would be great they gave there one little space then xx
Thank you - that was a wonderful tour, showing what you have, how you use it - and hopes/ potential plans for the future. Understanding that the whole world may have to reschedule the future plans - I do hope that things work out and you can proceed with confidence soon. Thank you for sharing this!
Noticed the spacing of your lightbulbs and have an idea. If you replace the light bulbs with residential low cost ceiling fans and leave them on low speed it would stir the air with out causing too much draft. That might be quite a bit cheaper to install plus the electric cost should not be too much. Just a thought.
Lester Smith I like your idea. Can you keep n extend the light below the fan, which is secured to the original light fixture ceiling box.? But, I’m sure this idea of @Lester Smith, was one of many ideas thrown around. It’s good to have nice neighbors like Lester and I,....right.? Thank you.! You’re a very kind soul....!
Pasture land for the rams sounds wonderful. Renovating the barn to accommodate more sheep is a great idea.
The lamb market will hopefully go back up really soon. I like the idea of using the old cow barn with pasture for the rams.
I love that house on this property.
I was gonna suggest the bank barn for ram storage! But grow out ewes could also be a great idea.
You are making me homesick for Ontario and the beautiful springs I miss!
Thank you that was very interesting 😊 and we got to see Billy again stay safe and healthy my hard working Shepard
I have still ordered my Easter lamb although it will be just the two of us eating it! (An itty-bitty roast). I wish I could buy tons for your sake!
I love your videos so much! I'm a city girl but only 1.5 generations removed from farming. I like seeing l your adorable sheep and lambs.
This would be perfect for a quarritine barn to. Any new sheep could go there for the first x amount of time so that they can be safe and have a place away from the flock in case they do have something.
Keep your head up Sandy- hopefully the market will pick back up. Here in Ohio - it is hard to find beef, pork and really any meat in our stores due to people hoarding. I pray things get better for the US and Canada as well. Stay safe- we will get through this for sure.
What a great tour of your farm. I am always interested in the farming practices everywhere.
As I have said before, I grew up on my family's hog farm. Venture into earthmoving.
But, I have learned . I left the farm, but the farm is still with me.
I love your willingness to share with all of us. I also love Merideth, W.T. Farmgirl, NY Farmgirls and the Kovaraks. Plus more.
Each farm is different, but all are committed to providing for the masses. And most of all it's about family.
God bless all. 🐑🐑
I love that old barn and the old house. " Billy" he has got it bad for you. Thanks for the tour, looking forward to more. God Bless and stay healthy.
Love Billy...but feel so sad when the white lambs come up to you and want some lovin too. Hope the market picks up before Easter so you can sell some lambs👍
Sandi - Great video, as always. Thanks for sharing. I now have a better perspective on how your farm is put together. Blessings to you and the family.
Love Old Barns Repurposed. You have a Beautiful Farm. Peace Be With You ☮️
Flying Pig Preserve Hey. I made a cattle farm routine on my channel but now I’m stuck on what video I should make next. Any recommendations?
Yes please give the rams their own home where they can relax in between work.
Thank you for the tour. You have a fabulous farm. Loved seeing Billie. Be safe
Old homes are expensive too heat, especially if only a few people live there. They do have some nice woodwork usually. My Grandfather hand a bannister with all of the kids and grand kids names engraved into it.
Wow! You’all are amazing!
Nice tour! Hope the market picks up by the time the lambs are ready.
Sounds like a plan for future space for Billy's babes and other sheep that could corral outside. Great tour of your farm and future plans or ideas. 👋 🐏🐑🐮🐗
We feel for you too Sandi..... things will turn around and hopefully be better than before. Stay safe and healthy. Hugs from your neighbors in Minnesota. Love seeing your farm.....
the old barn is very cathedral like very majestic
Thank you so much for sharing your plans. It has given me a lot to think about. It’s extremely helpful and very educational! I learn a great deal listening to your experiences!
Loved this sandi enjoyed the tour amazing place u guys have and without the snow it’s gorgeous ♥︎♥︎♥︎
Hi again SANDI
Enjoyed your tour of your farm! Always something to do never boring. Your flexible plans and thoughts into the future are wise ones. Enjoyed the quick pet time with Billy. Such a sweetie!
Just know Sandi some things you can't change and you have to accept those so hoping you won't stress knowing that. You only get stressed and hurt yourself which isn't the wisest choice. Hang in there on your nice place and count your blessings instead! Thx for sharing and a hug from afar...
Enjoyed this tour of your farm !!! keep videos coming THANKS !!
Enjoyed the tour. Keeping me sane while I’m sequestered in my bedroom away from the rest of the family. I need to get outside in the sunshine ☀️ 🌞!
I think using it for rams is a great idea! That pasture looks like a great size for your group.
That was fun! We have to clean the fans in the greenhouse about once year. They sure make a differece in air movement. Yes, that cow barn would be prefect for all your rams! Thank you so much for sharing! Love your videos!!!! :-)
you could put baffles in from the ceiling like they have cross flow dairy barns to help the ventilation.
respect you because you are practical and active
Would love a slow close-up of the post and beam construction of your bank barn. There is a lot of history in that construction. I couldn't make out the center line cross member construction of the rafters and any old hay processing system that may have been there. What I could see I didn't recognize and would love a close up video along with any voice-over you could do to explain what is there and how it was used. I know this is a sheep chanel but most farms have torn these barns down and you have a unique opportunity to record what is left of this one. It looks like there was a stable where the cows were with a mow over top. The mow floor has been removed but the holes where the floor beams were supported are still visible. Any history you could provide would be interesting.
Love your productions. Very informative and enlightening...! Keep on, keep on.
Love your farm. Thank you for the tour.
I love you channel!!!❤️
Thanks Sandi great video regards from the land down under
While the market/outcome may not be great, the process and the results were definitely something to be proud of!
Yay part two!!
Great tour, good to hear history of sheds etc. Seems an ideal shed for ram space.. time will tell I suppose!
Hang in there Sandi! God will bless your business and this whole virus thing will be over before you know it.
It looks so beautiful over there love your videos
The old barn where your straw is would be a beautiful back drop for a Fall family photo. The filtered natural lighting would be perfect.
I appreciate you & your videos.
I know your not doing cattle but are you raising one or two for consumption? Putting the rams in the bank barn sounds like a great idea really. Get you some seed and get after it! lol I pray the market turns around for you soon. I absolutely love your videos. I look forward to them everyday. Give Billy a scratch for me.
Really love your videos.
Great video, as always.
Your farm tour is quite refreshing. Hopefully you can get enough of your projects done and feel the progress.
Hi Sandi nice tour thanks did you're trip to nz inspire you're farming career. I live not far from Golden bay it's an awesome place.
Heyyyy All the way from Memphis Tn ❤️
Try not to stress about the markets. Although you may not get the returns you would like the cost of borrowing will come down and the input prices will also fall. Since you are pretty well set up its just a matter of chugging away until covid19 runs its course. Stay safe.
In the UK a local beef farm was selling to restaurants and that demand suddenly stopped.
However the locals have now discovered his great product and he now struggles to keep up with demand.
They provide butchered meet to residential customer's who collect the food 2 days a week
I just LOVE seeing all of the different parts of your farm, and how they all connect to bring it all together!!! I absolutely LOVE the bank barn and the potential it has. The lambs are adorable 😍😍💞🐑🐏!!! Do you ever sell any of your lambs to farmers? Or to those starting their own flock?? Like, if I were to start my own homestead, here in Michigan, in the US, would I be able to purchase some ewe lambs from you?? Or maybe go to where you sell them to, and purchase them there?? Just curious.
That old farmhouse is beautiful!!! 🏡 I realize the cost to renovate that farmhouse is 💰💸💰💸 but it would be so worth it in the end. Whether you turn it into one of those destination type getaways, where they pay you to work on your sheep farm, while staying in that house or just a regular air b&b, or whatever you want!!! Would just hate to see it demolished. 🏚 There is just too much history.
Sorry for rambling on so long!!
Thank you again for such amazing videos!!! Please keep them coming!!!
You have a beautiful farm.❤️😘
So future Sandi wants you to know that you DID eventually get the air bags/vents!
This may sound weird, but the fans don't seem to loud to me. They are kind of relaxing.
Awesome.
2nd! Love your channel!
Love the house and old barn hi lambs and you
I look forward to your video's ,would love to live in the countryside.
That is great!!!!
I meant ceiling fans with lights. They are also reversible to help with the drafts also.
Retirement savings hit hard
Very interesting!
Prices may rebound sooner than you think, hang in for a couple of weeks and things may get better. Probably not easter type prices but better. best wishes!
Nice tour
Long but loved every minute of it
UK lamb prices are apparently down to. It’s everywhere
Sandi the feeders has some major cob webs that I think should be cleaned out see 13:28-13:33. Billy knows his Mama. No better love than an animals. It a love that’s true, unconditional and so rewarding. I wish I had me a Billy. Did you ever think of putting Billy on a leash and walking with him? Is all that you’ve shown us yours and Mark’s land? How much land in total do you both own? Looks a lot! Take care💕☮️🐏🤟✝️
Such beautiful pristine Immaculate real estate
U have a beautiful home and farm sandi your very lucky 😍😍😍 xxx
Great video....and I know that when I send the hubby to market, I will have him buy lamb for Easter..... if you are in Canada, buy Canadian... Hugs from Halifax
were just about keeping markets functioning here in the UK - however farmers are not allowed to stay with therir stock - drop off only - so confidence in the buyers and auctioneers is not great atm...some shockingly low prices.
Using for your rams is best idea. Will give you more space in main barn. And the rams will improve.
I think making it a ram barn would be awesome, it would give the girls a lot more room and they may also fight less because they won't have girls around them all the time
Yes I think you should use it for the rams!!
Thank you for sharing your barn, all of this is interesting. Oh I like to purchase some of the wool products including a kits
Old barns can be used as people barns, in the uk we use them for weddings, fares, markets. With the house to for visitors you could as sell wool products Ther two.
spilt your pasture into 3 small paddocks, and have an alley way by the building to move the rams along, so you can move them along between them, then you can rest each small paddock
I don't know if anyone has said this but you should clean the fans so you have better circulation in your barn. It will make a world of difference especially during the summer. I would do it maybe once a year or twice just in case. You can also add heated coils during the winter and have warmer air flowing through. But just enough to keep it comfortable for the lambs.
Check out "On Pasture" for some info on how to rehab the pasture using no inputs. You could film some of it and that would be interesting to some.
Putting the rams in the old cow barn would free up space for lambing for sure!!
