I liked Yizhen the most, as she is very beautiful and elegant. Wished the show had her in a more prominent role. I liked this this scene as the main people in the household came to Shiyi’s defense and ganged up on the GM. Finally people stood up to her and made her realize all the things Shiyi did for the family.
Only Yizhen can calm the Mother because she understands ter temperament very well that's why she is always around her ...

Actually I think it's fault of shiyi because she kept on tolerating old hag nosy behaviour. If she could be little scheming and devious as her elder sister I am pretty sure old hag didn't dare to mess with her.
I mean think about it why didn't old hag ever tried to meddle in her son's life when her eldest sister was alive.

I can believe this, this metriach had made so much mistakes in the name of Xu family,I don't get this kind of c4appy marriage and family system, people do not have a voice ,all power vested in one woman,that is a total crappy system.
I gather that the idea is that the elders of the family have the most experience, and will use it in the most moral pious and proper way to care for the younger generation, while the younger generation practices filial piety to respect and cherish the elderly. With the emphasis on family the result is SUPPOSED to be that no one with a family will be without a home and support, there will be no need for nursing homes to warehouse surplus elderly, true young will have guidance, etc.
Obviously, that is the Ideal as seen through rose colored glasses. Here we are seeing glimpses of the many flaws in the system. Narrow minded stupid wicked or even dementia patients are allowed to trample about as they please and the young are expected to sacrifice life liberty and pursuit of happiness in the name of filial piety and the supremacy of the family.
Much of the time things managed along. Here we have an example of if this family had truly knuckled under to strict 'Mama Knows Best and Dead Rich Guys Rule' then long ago Shiyi would have been thrown out onto the street to starve, the evil concubine would have been forced as legal wife, Shin and the Princess' unborn child would be dead, the adults in the family would have been executed for crimes against the Emperor -- but GM would have gotten that worship from her offspring to the day they were all executed.
