Kudos for being the first bike reviewer who adds the hub noise!!! Some people, including me, are very curious for the hub noise!!! Great work! Keep going!
Good job, Todd. I like that you added personal commentary to your review, as well as the Canadian and U.S. prices. I believe that putting yourself in the video was a positive addition as well. I can see measurable improvement in your videos. I think your subscriber numbers will start climbing soon. I am looking forward to your next review.
Thanks Carl, much appreciated, I have a long way to go to polish these videos, lots to learn still.
Thanks for the honest review. Gotta look for another bike....
Ha ok well I went with the roscoe 8, thank you for the advice! The bike is sick and I have ZERO regrets! Thanks again for the suggestion!
This is the same frame used for Trek's police bicycles. A kickstand is a must have on a police bike.
Do you make a review of the 2020 mountain bikes?
I'm glad you mention the welds because to me the welds on that frame look awful. They make the bike look cheaply made and it's certainly not a cheap bike.
Please, review the 2020 red model.
This commentary thing takes a lot of work to get better at. Nonetheless, I have missed a few things I wish I had mentioned, the cheap grips which Trek list as being Bontrager race light lock on grips. These are not those, and I would imagine we will see a running change once they have sufficient stock. These grips look like 10 cent foreign grips. The sizing once again follow suit with regards to their new mentality that the frame between women and mens models are identical in terms of geometry, this is great for both men and women. What do you guys think of this bike? overpriced?
trek has done a bad job with the spec sheet, there has been something wrong with some of the bikes for a long time. trek doing a bad job with something is not a surprise, wit my bikes it was bad quality control, too bad components. I hope they set up their game, I heard the new bikes are stiffer, but I am always sceptical to Bontrager wheels on the cheaper models.
Great video! Could you do a review of the 2018 Trek Stache 5 pls?! Would love to see your opinion on it!
Land of Bikes is there any better Scott bike than this in the same price tag????
Good question, I don't think Scott has a bike similar to this.
I will try, I've been so busy with finishing my degree.
Personal experience after 2000 Km (80% city, 20% xc)
Bought in Germany, driven in Austria.
Crank (RaceFace Ride) non-drive side wobbling and so loud you feel like riding and old Ukraina bike.
Shimano bottom bracket BB-52 gone after 800km only. I have bikes from Trek, Cannondale, Scott since 24 yrs, never had so much problems with any of my bikes... Maybe a Monday piece?
First off love that you broke the price down between Canadian and US lol. Secondly its designed as a cross country bike. If your gonna trail ride it make sure to change out the tires, they are 100% cross country tires
And I agree on the frame the welds look like huffy quality
When I say this bike is for trail riding, I mean it in the general sense of the term, but yes, you are correct. This bike is a cross country bike. I was just trying to get the point across that people would use this for riding trails and not commuting in an urban areas where a kickstand would be needed. But the euro market is a lot different. Thanks for that incite thought, I'll be more clear in the future.
Trek roscoe shares the same frame and is more trail orientated.
Any chance you can weigh the new Cannondale Trail 3? I heard it weighs just over 30lbs. (In medium). Seems high considering it’s a 1x. 11. And air fork. .
Nice review
If I can get my hands on one, you bet.
How good/bad are the front fork and brakes of x-cal 9 2018????? Compared to bikes which come in this price range??
Comparable, they are all really similar. Shimano does a really good entry level brake without issues.
I would imagine that the ISO provides little relief over chatter and roots on the trail, though. I can’t see this being good on anything but mostly smooth fire road. Am I wrong?
ISO?
In Trek's words, the Adjustable Rear IsoSpeed Decoupler, like on my Domane. I jumped the gun and got confused. It's on the Procaliber, not this model. Their attempt at minimizing harshness, but a far cry from rear suspension. A sort of knuckle joint at the top tube-seat tube junction.
I have a TREK 2019 X Caliber 9, truly amazing bike, just had to sell my kidney to afford it
How about xcaliber 8’s suspension and the gears and all stuff
What exactly would you like to know about it?
Please review the trek fuel ex 8 eagle 2018
Will try to soon.
Done, check it out on my channel.
Hello, I am looking at purchasing a 2018 x-caliber 8 soon. As far as I can tell they are the same besides the tires and fork shocks. Can the 8's forks be upgraded when they wear out? Just getting back into the bike scene after MANY years and everything seems like spaceship tech now, I am completely clueless. I rode the 9 and it felt great but it seems like the 8 is the best price point for components/price. I am trying to figure out though if I will be kicking myself when it comes to maybe replacing shocks/forks etc down the road because of compatibility issues.
That’s tough, it comes down to how much riding and what type of riding. The standards now-a-days are a lot better and I’m sure you won’t see suspension compatibility change a lot in coming years. If you are already thinking about upgrading then get the 9. But the 8 is a great bike, so it really comes down to your budget. I’d also consider looking at the Roscoe 8.
Hey thank you for the quick response! The upgrades I was thinking would be in the future or maybe sooner if I am bottoming out the fork often. The thing is I will be using this bike for pleasure rides town and commuting once in a while/camping with a hammock as well. I was thinking the xcal 8 because of the my budget( would allow me to purchase a helmet and a dropper post because I will be sending it from time to time). I see the Roscoe 8 has a dropper post from the factory and a 120mm fork. Can that fork be installed on the Xcal 29" wheel if I modify the hub? Haha yeah you can see I am trying to find a bike that can cover my bases for at least two summers...and I wont be putting a kickstand on it... Thanks again for your advice, I will subscribe!
You probably could put the Roscoe fork on the Xcal, but that would be a waste of money, you cant make the xcal frame any wider. So you would be left with a midfat front tire and regular rear, not to mention that fork and front wheel would be a large chunk of money. I suggest you ride both bikes, I'd almost gaurantee that you wouldn't want to ride the xcal after trying the roscoe.
I was so sure I wanted the procaliber 8, but today I saw the xcal 8, and the price is way cheaper than the procaliber 8. Around $1,000 cheaper!! The xcal seems to be 1kg heavier. The bike looks nice though. Just the devil lies in the details. I'm not a competitor. I ride in the weekends. However, maybe in the future I could strat doing races here in my country. Not sure though .. What would you suggest? A procaliber 8 or an x-caliber 9?
Procal if you have the money, it is by far the best hardtail I've ridden.
Land of Bikes Thanks. I bought the Procal.
Why did this frame only lasted 1 year?
Was looking at the ex 8 and 9 today at My Local bike store the price gap is big butyou get a bit better gear, should i invest in it or buy the ex 8
Tough call, what kind of ridding will you be doing? Cause I may recommend a completely different bike. Sorry for the late reply, my life has been crazy.
Land of Bikes mostly singel track and trail riding, i`ve tried the ex 8 and ex 9 2017 to bad they were to small in size, i ride a 21,5 frame
can i fit a fox 34 , 140mm travel on this bike? thank you
Depends what tire you plan to ride. If you want to fit a 3.0 it may be a bit tight for clearance.
is there any real reason for me to upgrade from 2016 x-caliber 9 to this version?
No, if you are going to upgrade, go to a pro cal or a full suspension bike.
Have a doubt. Is trek marlin 7 better or scott aspect 730
What did you reseach figure out?
2017 or 2018? Which model you'd say is better buy?
I like the new frame, its a pretty big step up. It may be hard to justify the price increase though. It really depends on your budget, and what kind of riding you'll be doing.
I love the 2018 model
My concern is the rear uses a quick release and not a thru axle, only the front is..
I wisg it had a proper boost 148 thru axle instead of the QR, too. I hear yah.
Land of Bikes But could it be replaced to a thru axel?
Unfortunately not, it's a boost QR 141. Save up for the Stache.
Land of Bikes Considering the stache 5 atm, any comment on that bike comparing to xcaliber 9?
I'm European (Austrian) and don't like kickstands on trail bikes and I have hardly ever seen kickstands on trail bikes around where I live (Innsbruck).
FTStratLP sarcasm, don’t take the comment personal.
Can it work on paved roads,?
Technically, yes.
@@ToddJones how could you go about buying a set of road tires for this mountain bike? i guess you would need buy new wheel/tire set.
What is the widest tyre size you can fit on these?
That’s a great question, being a mid-fat it can handle 3inch for sure. What were you hoping to put on it? Or what kind of riding are you doing? I think a 2.8 would be perfect for trail.
I don’t think the X-Cal is touted as being a mid-fat HT so I doubt a 2.8” will fit on this frame and fork even though it is ‘boosted’... It does come with 2.2’s so I’m hoping maybe up to 2.6” might be possible?
Paleo Pedaler for some reason Zi thought this was the Roscoe vid when I responded. My bad, I think you could fit a 2.6 into this frame. Sorry for the confusion.
Michael Tan
The Rosco is the same frame. The tires will fit.
Is the suspension weak or good
it's good, just not air, which means it will be a bit heavier. The Roscoe 8 has an air fork, if you can upgrade to that.
In the video you said it's solo air. What's the difference? Looking into this bike and I'm trying to learn more about it. Thanks for making this video!
Hi would this be a good commuter bike??
I have one. I use it to get around town and it works okay for that but the type of tires on this bike are kinda big and slow you down. also the pavement kinda wears the tires out as they are meant to be ridden on dirt. I cant afford 2 bikes so I just deal with it but I notice I go through tires pretty quick and that costs money. I road a friends Fuji commuter bike with skinny tires, rigid frame and I was blown away by the speed I got with barely any effort. makes me wanna go buy a proper street bike.
@@aubreygaraghan7479 thanks for your comprehensive reply bro much appreciated.. I've bought a trek ebike lol. Got a great deal on the older model trek powerfly.....
New x caliber 9 2019 has a Judy silver TK fork.... I somehow think its a step down from recon Gold RL.... what is your opinion???? How bad or good is it ???
Very similar, I couldn't tell much difference honestly.
How wide are the new rims?
Good question, I can't actually find that information anywhere..
The size should be written somewhere on the rim, on a sticker.
hmm chisel from big s has more appealing to me
The kickstand comment is a joke. If you are European don’t take offence to it, surely it’s not because Europeans love kickstands, it is a comment directly from one of the Trek guys but he was being sarcastic. I’m surprised at how personal people take this comment seriously.
big increase in prices for 2018, across all brands and models.... like now a 2000$ bike has some cheap components...
Waveridermusic, not entirely true. Its common to see a price increase with a new frame, usually do to engineering costs associated with its development. This bike does get a bit better wheels, cranks etc. but the frame is a big step up from last year. I've noticed that bike prices have actually come down this year while being spec'd better.
I am from Germany, and we really don't like kickstands
Haha, I’ve gotten a lot of flak for that statement. It was a sarcastic comment. Most cyclist don’t, that’s why I found it odd that Trek put mounts on that bike. Thanks for watching!
Kickstands are a pointless product, as wind will blow the bike over, onyl way to properly walk away fro my your bike is to lay it on the ground or lean it against a wall, with the rear tyre and the bar leakign agianst the wall.
I would agree Johannes
Its there because Europeans love kickstands? I never saw someone here in the netherlands ride trails with kickstands. What a bull shitt statement from trek.
It honestly doesn't make a lot of sense on a bike at this price point, or on the Roscoe's either. I don't think they meant that Europeans trail ride with kick stands, but that these bikes are bought by people who use them to commute around the city and would like a kick stand. The European market is huge and far more influential than the american market, believe it or not.
there are a lot of silly things when it comes to city riding and letting the bike be outside, for example, racks that only work for thin tyres, bike racks where you can't roll the bike in with a mtb fork, or in the rear, so for this reason I think alot of peopel will use kickstands, but the problem is that it can be summer weather and very windy weather in the same day sop the bike will be brutally blown down, and scraped up, but as I wrote before laying it on the non drive side works best, when locking a bike outside, lock it against the bike racks lock the frame and both wheels, even this will block 4 or 6 or more bike racks from others to use. or take it inside the store with you.
Where do you live if the wind is that strong lol
I would not recommend his bike. I have one and it has good points, but is not trail ready by a long shot. If you want to ride trails do NOT buy this bike. The back wheel slips out every time you go over rough stuff. Why introduce a boost hub on the rear that is quick release? Should be a bolt through because of the stress through the axle from the stiffer wheel. In my opinion this is a MASSIVE design flaw. The forks I think are fine, but the brakes I find are weak on downhill trails. And the Bontrager tyres are a joke. I have never had so many punctures before. They also wore out within a couple of months of riding. Replaced them with Maxxis minions and have not had a problem in 3 months of riding. If you want a trail ready/XC hard tail, look for something with a bolt through rear hub otherwise you will be heading AOT on trails. Not impressed with this at all Trek.
I am European and I dont know why I am even watching this video but I dont know a single Mountainbiker around here and my neighboring countries, who would screw a gaylord kickstand on his mountainbike. That is some serious BS.
Agreed, and I don't either, thats why I mention how odd it is. I also think it was a BS thing for Trek to tell me. Not ragging on Europeans, don't get me wrong there.
Everythings cool, man! And I am not ragging on homosexuals either;)) Peace out and Ride on!
Complaining about a kickstand mount like this? Who cares? Don't put a kickstand on it. Problem solved.
Thanks for the feedback.
