    Good job, Todd. I like that you added personal commentary to your review, as well as the Canadian and U.S. prices. I believe that putting yourself in the video was a positive addition as well. I can see measurable improvement in your videos. I think your subscriber numbers will start climbing soon. I am looking forward to your next review.

    This is the same frame used for Trek's police bicycles. A kickstand is a must have on a police bike.

    I'm glad you mention the welds because to me the welds on that frame look awful. They make the bike look cheaply made and it's certainly not a cheap bike.

    This commentary thing takes a lot of work to get better at. Nonetheless, I have missed a few things I wish I had mentioned, the cheap grips which Trek list as being Bontrager race light lock on grips. These are not those, and I would imagine we will see a running change once they have sufficient stock. These grips look like 10 cent foreign grips. The sizing once again follow suit with regards to their new mentality that the frame between women and mens models are identical in terms of geometry, this is great for both men and women. What do you guys think of this bike? overpriced?

      trek has done a bad job with the spec sheet, there has been something wrong with some of the bikes for a long time. trek doing a bad job with something is not a surprise, wit my bikes it was bad quality control, too bad components. I hope they set up their game, I heard the new bikes are stiffer, but I am always sceptical to Bontrager wheels on the cheaper models.

    Bought in Germany, driven in Austria.
    Crank (RaceFace Ride) non-drive side wobbling and so loud you feel like riding and old Ukraina bike.
    Shimano bottom bracket BB-52 gone after 800km only. I have bikes from Trek, Cannondale, Scott since 24 yrs, never had so much problems with any of my bikes... Maybe a Monday piece?

    @dabullz2346 Před 6 lety +6

    First off love that you broke the price down between Canadian and US lol. Secondly its designed as a cross country bike. If your gonna trail ride it make sure to change out the tires, they are 100% cross country tires

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety +1

      When I say this bike is for trail riding, I mean it in the general sense of the term, but yes, you are correct. This bike is a cross country bike. I was just trying to get the point across that people would use this for riding trails and not commuting in an urban areas where a kickstand would be needed. But the euro market is a lot different. Thanks for that incite thought, I'll be more clear in the future.

      In Trek's words, the Adjustable Rear IsoSpeed Decoupler, like on my Domane. I jumped the gun and got confused. It's on the Procaliber, not this model. Their attempt at minimizing harshness, but a far cry from rear suspension. A sort of knuckle joint at the top tube-seat tube junction.

    Hello, I am looking at purchasing a 2018 x-caliber 8 soon. As far as I can tell they are the same besides the tires and fork shocks. Can the 8's forks be upgraded when they wear out? Just getting back into the bike scene after MANY years and everything seems like spaceship tech now, I am completely clueless. I rode the 9 and it felt great but it seems like the 8 is the best price point for components/price. I am trying to figure out though if I will be kicking myself when it comes to maybe replacing shocks/forks etc down the road because of compatibility issues.

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety

      That’s tough, it comes down to how much riding and what type of riding. The standards now-a-days are a lot better and I’m sure you won’t see suspension compatibility change a lot in coming years. If you are already thinking about upgrading then get the 9. But the 8 is a great bike, so it really comes down to your budget. I’d also consider looking at the Roscoe 8.

    • @peterbattle5702
      @peterbattle5702 Před 6 lety

      Hey thank you for the quick response! The upgrades I was thinking would be in the future or maybe sooner if I am bottoming out the fork often. The thing is I will be using this bike for pleasure rides town and commuting once in a while/camping with a hammock as well. I was thinking the xcal 8 because of the my budget( would allow me to purchase a helmet and a dropper post because I will be sending it from time to time). I see the Roscoe 8 has a dropper post from the factory and a 120mm fork. Can that fork be installed on the Xcal 29" wheel if I modify the hub? Haha yeah you can see I am trying to find a bike that can cover my bases for at least two summers...and I wont be putting a kickstand on it... Thanks again for your advice, I will subscribe!

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety

      You probably could put the Roscoe fork on the Xcal, but that would be a waste of money, you cant make the xcal frame any wider. So you would be left with a midfat front tire and regular rear, not to mention that fork and front wheel would be a large chunk of money. I suggest you ride both bikes, I'd almost gaurantee that you wouldn't want to ride the xcal after trying the roscoe.

  • @ArtificialJetleg
    @ArtificialJetleg Před 6 lety

    I was so sure I wanted the procaliber 8, but today I saw the xcal 8, and the price is way cheaper than the procaliber 8. Around $1,000 cheaper!! The xcal seems to be 1kg heavier. The bike looks nice though. Just the devil lies in the details. I'm not a competitor. I ride in the weekends. However, maybe in the future I could strat doing races here in my country. Not sure though .. What would you suggest? A procaliber 8 or an x-caliber 9?

      I have one. I use it to get around town and it works okay for that but the type of tires on this bike are kinda big and slow you down. also the pavement kinda wears the tires out as they are meant to be ridden on dirt. I cant afford 2 bikes so I just deal with it but I notice I go through tires pretty quick and that costs money. I road a friends Fuji commuter bike with skinny tires, rigid frame and I was blown away by the speed I got with barely any effort. makes me wanna go buy a proper street bike.

      Waveridermusic, not entirely true. Its common to see a price increase with a new frame, usually do to engineering costs associated with its development. Kickstands are a pointless product, as wind will blow the bike over, onyl way to properly walk away fro my your bike is to lay it on the ground or lean it against a wall, with the rear tyre and the bar leakign agianst the wall.

    • @ToddJones
      @ToddJones  Před 6 lety

      It honestly doesn't make a lot of sense on a bike at this price point, or on the Roscoe's either. I don't think they meant that Europeans trail ride with kick stands, but that these bikes are bought by people who use them to commute around the city and would like a kick stand. The European market is huge and far more influential than the american market, believe it or not.

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 Před 6 lety

      there are a lot of silly things when it comes to city riding and letting the bike be outside, for example, racks that only work for thin tyres, bike racks where you can't roll the bike in with a mtb fork, or in the rear, so for this reason I think alot of peopel will use kickstands, but the problem is that it can be summer weather and very windy weather in the same day sop the bike will be brutally blown down, and scraped up, but as I wrote before laying it on the non drive side works best, when locking a bike outside, lock it against the bike racks lock the frame and both wheels, even this will block 4 or 6 or more bike racks from others to use. or take it inside the store with you.

  • @bluemoon9uk

    I would not recommend his bike. I have one and it has good points, but is not trail ready by a long shot. If you want to ride trails do NOT buy this bike. The back wheel slips out every time you go over rough stuff. Why introduce a boost hub on the rear that is quick release? Should be a bolt through because of the stress through the axle from the stiffer wheel. In my opinion this is a MASSIVE design flaw. The forks I think are fine, but the brakes I find are weak on downhill trails. And the Bontrager tyres are a joke. I have never had so many punctures before. They also wore out within a couple of months of riding. Replaced them with Maxxis minions and have not had a problem in 3 months of riding. If you want a trail ready/XC hard tail, look for something with a bolt through rear hub otherwise you will be heading AOT on trails. Not impressed with this at all Trek.
