So I was at this event at the base of that ski hill. I'm not sure people realize how MASSIVE this firework was to see in person. Words cant really put it into perspective. It was magnificent. Nobody knew it had worked until the sky turned red and everyone lost their minds.
The year before, their first attempt, failed. It exploded inside the ground, and actually shook the ground and broke a window, and car alarms were going off all over!!!
So much power inside that thing. I still have the newspaper article from the next day pinned in my room.

Using frame-by-frame analysis, I found sound lag of launch to be 7.00 seconds, and the sound lag of shell denotation to be 7.23 seconds.
Steamboat springs has an elevation of 2,103 m, giving an air pressure of 101,301 pascals
The event also occurs at 7:56 pm in February, so I will assume a temperature of -10 degrees celsius
Steamboat Springs Airport had a humidity of 80% on 2/8
Using the speed of sound equation (and the gas law), the calculated speed of sound in the video is close to 325.44 m/s
    Distance from launch= 7.00 s * 325.44 m/s= 2,278m
    Distance from shell explosion= 7.23 s * 325.44 m/s= 2,353m
    More fun facts:
The initial speed at launch according to CNN is 300 mph = 134 m/s
    Mass of the shell= 2,797 pounds= 1272kg
The 62 inch shell traveled nearly a mile into the air

Take a good look at the Japanese "Yonchakudama" if you want to see artistic skill and engineering that surpass this. Yes, it was big but not beautiful at all and that is in my opinion the first rule with fireworks. They can keep the title, but I think people rather watch Japanese fireworks. 😉
