I really liked that Hugh not only claimed Vermithor, but did so by saving the bastard girl. Just a small thing, I'm sure we will never see her again so ultimately it doesn't matter, but it was nice to see mercy by the writers for once, if I am being honest.
I think it's not just that Hugh was brave, but the dragons see themselves a bit in the rider they choose. Vermithor was strong-willed and wild, and saw that in Hugh. The dragon that Ulf accidentally ran into seemed more meek, and perhaps was an outsider itself and saw that reflected in Ulf's clumsy, oafishness.
Ulfs dragon is silverwing. She isn't meek but rather docile. She's been stated to be kind towards humans. She's probably the only dragon that does indeed let other people around her. The rest of the dragons including Syrax do not let others near then

Ulf seems like an approachable, friendly guy. I think he made Silverwing laugh or amused her at least by her playfulness toward him. Both Vermithor and silverwing had been riderless since the passing of King J and his Queen. I’m not sure if silverwing would be so easily into bonding again unless her more cranky vermithor had done it. Who wants to be the last single dragon?
Yup. I'd say it was more stubbornness, but I'm pretty sure that "dozens of people got roasted, eaten, and smashed before two dudes got lucky" is one hell of a deterrent against this becoming common practice. No one's gonna want to claim a dragon if they know that Targaryen blood isn't enough and the odds are against them.

A question I always asked myself was, why did Vermithor choose someone like Hugh to be his rider? The show’s choice to answer that question made me very happy. They don't say it directly, but they heavily imply it’s Saera the mother of Hugh. Among all the children, Saera was the one who had the most of Jaehaerys' attention, both for better and worse. King Jaehaerys died asking for Saera, wanting to see her. He clearly had a lot to resolve with her, and it was probably a matter that still haunted him; he wished to reconcile with her. Vermithor being the dragon of Jaehaerys and choosing Hugh as his rider now makes total sense. Hugh is the son of the daughter Jaehaerys wanted to reconcile with and probably regretted how things went sour between them. This regret and unresolved feelings passed down to Vermithor, who could sense it in Hugh. I honestly loved this explanation.
I think Hugh choosing to face Vermithor to let the lady escape also played a role, not that Vermithor knows selflessness or anything like that but the balls of steel to yell at a dragon probably helped
I do think the family angle is a part but also because Hugh was genuinely brave and bold, something that young Jaehaerys was well known for. For Vermathor he was essentially creating a trial by fire to see who among the prospective riders would run and flee if things got tough, and who would rise to the occasion and stand up and protect others even in the face of death.
After seeing Silverwing's design, I am sure Syrax is her child. And I have also heard that Silverwing and Vermithor are lovers. So, the ending scene was quite literally, Mother, Father and Daughter assemble.

I like how there's no cut and dried way to claim a dragon. Seasmoke wanted Laenor's closest relative and ONLY that, even claiming Addam after he ran in fear. Vermithor would only accept someone brave and brash as he was (and maybe also of his rider's direct lineage?), but Silverwing chose Ulf because he submitted to her. There is no formula to it, no way to walk in and be assured you'll walk out. Either you are what this individual dragon wants, or you die in agony.
That's why Targs just give their kids cradle eggs so they bond with the baby dragon from birth. It is the safest way to gain a dragon and significantly lowers rejection rates. Otherwise it is a trial by fire (literally) if a dragon will accept you even if you have Valyrian blood pumping in your veins.
You can easily tell by the way she moves and sounds that Syrax is an offspring of Silverwing. Both seem more gentle and more elegant in their movement than other dragons.

Leaving King's Landing with Vaghar he wanted to destroy Rhaenyra, but he sees Vermithor, Syrax and Seasmox in front of Dragonstone and Silverwing, and surely on the way back, knowing that there is also Vermax and Moondancer, it's so enjoyable! We would love a Vermithor vs Vaghar fight, but I know they don't fight, I would at least like to see them close to compare the size.

Cause it was a hail Mary, throw all of them at once and see if vermithor would deem one worthy of his service. Plus she no longer had the dragon priests to be able to do them one at a time in the proper tradition so she just called him out gave him that knowing look and walked away to see what happened.
Someone actually mentioned how ingenious it was to wipe out all the other bastards who could possibly try to claim dragons in the future. Rhaenyra had a specific mission to find dragon riders to fight for her. If she let the others who did not get to claim Vermithor live, they might get ideas to claim another dragon down the road behind her back which would not serve her cause. She had to ensure that this secret meeting remains a secret. It might seem cruel at first glance - and interestingly enough, someone else pointed that it might come back to bite her in the arse because Ulf and Hugh will remember her cruelty and how she basically gambled with their lives (iyk, yk) - but at this point I think people need to cut her some slack. She is growing desperate and she's already lost so much by playing it nice.

He's formidable, but he's not "more" imposing. Sure he's younger, and probably a tiny bit faster, but not by much. But he's pretty outclassed by Vhagar in a 1v1. He's about 80-90 years old and fought in 2 conflicts in all of his life. Vhagar is a 180 and fought in a hundred wars and conflicts. She's bigger, stronger, has hotter flames, and has more battle experience. Vermi is my favorite of the non wild dragons, but there's a good reason that Rhaenyra never once sent Vermithor out to fight Aemond on Vhagar. She knew the only way to beat the strongest was to send their fastest and wildest. Daemon didn't think he could win alone in a fair fight, so he didn't fight in a fair fight.
@@kailanerman5090 He certainly is, i think you are forgetting the part where Rhaenyra says Vermithor is the most fierce out of all the dragons which we kind of witnessed last episode, and also when Vhagar chases Silverwing to dragonstone Aemond sees Vermithor parked up waiting and he tells her to flee and turns Vhagar back because he knows Vermithor's repuation and size wise he isn't far off her he's huge and he looks much more menacing than Vhagar although with a similar Komodo dragon neck but a T-rex head, plus he was the fastest growing dragon along with Sunfyre ever confirmed by George for being 90-100 years old he was not far off Vhagar's size and as we saw his size is damn impressive, yes Vhagar is the oldest and the biggest but she's past her prime, look what Meleys a dragon much smaller than both Vhagar and Vermithor did to her, it would be one hell of a fight between them if it ever happened, think your underestimating Vermithor after all the evidence you have seen sadly.

There's no NO way Vhagar and Vermi fight, and it doesn't end with a death As for species of dragon I think they might be the same. Horse, wolf, and trex type is what the show runners did. Belarion looks like a much older and more narled version of Drogon/Seasmoke trex style
@shahinm02 Rhaenyra isn't exactly an expert on all things. She thought that because Syrax was fast that she could make a match for Vhagar. I wouldn't trust Rhaenyra to know what her best advantage was unless Daemon was peeking over her shoulder and giving the nod. Aemond didn't flee because he just saw Vermithor. There was also syrax, Moondancer, Dreamfyre, and Seasmoke there too. Vhagar in a 1v1 could beat any one of them. But a 2v1? A 3v1? Or more? That's just suicide.
Vermithor doesn't even warn that he's bringin' the smoke (pun/joke intended); he just starts roasting everyone without even the hint of a glow in his mouth. I already have a soft spot for Silverwing. She just pushes Ulf, pretending to be a big ol' bully, and then is like, "Oh, I can make plenty of those. Let's head out."
I love Vermithor and Syrax at the end being like "Wassup bro!?, come try to fuck with us now!" Nothing against the human characters/actors but the dragons are the best characters on the show. The CGI and sound team for them is KILLING it.

I don’t understand why Rhaenyra didn’t set a trap for Aemond. It’s almost as if she wanted the Greens to know she had these new dragons. In hopes of what? That they would surrender? All she had to do was have Silverwing lure Vhagar to the island, and then have Seasmoke and Vermithor flank granny, while the other two dragons approach from the island, and Vhagar is done for. Anyway, Rhaenyra was basically daring Aemond and Vhagar to fight Vermithor. Syrax isn’t the largest dragon, but when you’ve got that backup, even Aemond has to tuck tail and run.

You can easily tell by the way she moves and sounds that Syrax is an offspring of Silverwing. Both seem more gentle and more elegant in their movement than other dragons.

We would love a Vermithor vs Vaghar fight, but I know they don't fight, I would at least like to see them close to compare the size.

Someone actually mentioned how ingenious it was to wipe out all the other bastards who could possibly try to claim dragons in the future. Rhaenyra had a specific mission to find dragon riders to fight for her. If she let the others who did not get to claim Vermithor live, they might get ideas to claim another dragon down the road behind her back which would not serve her cause. She had to ensure that this secret meeting remains a secret. It might seem cruel at first glance - and interestingly enough, someone else pointed that it might come back to bite her in the arse because Ulf and Hugh will remember her cruelty and how she basically gambled with their lives (iyk, yk) - but at this point I think people need to cut her some slack. She is growing desperate and she's already lost so much by playing it nice.

Man, if only Rhaenyra had recruited riders for Vermithor and Silverwing at Rook's Rest. Vhagar and Sunfyre would have been absolutely toast.
Vermithor is even more imposing then Vhagar because he's younger.
He's formidable, but he's not "more" imposing. Sure he's younger, and probably a tiny bit faster, but not by much.
But he's pretty outclassed by Vhagar in a 1v1. He's about 80-90 years old and fought in 2 conflicts in all of his life. Vhagar is a 180 and fought in a hundred wars and conflicts. She's bigger, stronger, has hotter flames, and has more battle experience.
Vermi is my favorite of the non wild dragons, but there's a good reason that Rhaenyra never once sent Vermithor out to fight Aemond on Vhagar. She knew the only way to beat the strongest was to send their fastest and wildest.
Daemon didn't think he could win alone in a fair fight, so he didn't fight in a fair fight.
@@kailanerman5090 He certainly is, i think you are forgetting the part where Rhaenyra says Vermithor is the most fierce out of all the dragons which we kind of witnessed last episode, and also when Vhagar chases Silverwing to dragonstone Aemond sees Vermithor parked up waiting and he tells her to flee and turns Vhagar back because he knows Vermithor's repuation and size wise he isn't far off her he's huge and he looks much more menacing than Vhagar although with a similar Komodo dragon neck but a T-rex head, plus he was the fastest growing dragon along with Sunfyre ever confirmed by George for being 90-100 years old he was not far off Vhagar's size and as we saw his size is damn impressive, yes Vhagar is the oldest and the biggest but she's past her prime, look what Meleys a dragon much smaller than both Vhagar and Vermithor did to her, it would be one hell of a fight between them if it ever happened, think your underestimating Vermithor after all the evidence you have seen sadly.

As for species of dragon I think they might be the same. Horse, wolf, and trex type is what the show runners did. Belarion looks like a much older and more narled version of Drogon/Seasmoke trex style

I wouldn't trust Rhaenyra to know what her best advantage was unless Daemon was peeking over her shoulder and giving the nod.
Aemond didn't flee because he just saw Vermithor. There was also syrax, Moondancer, Dreamfyre, and Seasmoke there too.
Vhagar in a 1v1 could beat any one of them. But a 2v1? A 3v1? Or more? That's just suicide.

in my opinion, Vhagar had a little chance. Seasmoke, Vermithor and Silverwing's riders just claimed it, they didnt know high valyrian language to command drags and yet Silverwing, Syrax, Vermax and Moondancer are never in a battle so...Vhagar could smoking 3 or 4 drags before dying..

Is it just me or does Silverwing look like a cross between a Skyrim dragon and the dragons from Reign of Fire??
I don’t understand why Rhaenyra didn’t set a trap for Aemond. It’s almost as if she wanted the Greens to know she had these new dragons. In hopes of what? That they would surrender? All she had to do was have Silverwing lure Vhagar to the island, and then have Seasmoke and Vermithor flank granny, while the other two dragons approach from the island, and Vhagar is done for.
Anyway, Rhaenyra was basically daring Aemond and Vhagar to fight Vermithor. Syrax isn’t the largest dragon, but when you’ve got that backup, even Aemond has to tuck tail and run.
She is an idiot, she needs to take advice from her advisors. She is in way over her head. She was not taught how to fight or strategies, she mentions it in the show too.
Because those dragonseeds are not trained yet
