So the original flambeges were made by medieval European blacksmiths, then adapted into modern manga with some exaggerated curves for better reading
ALTERNATIVE FUN FACT:
The whip sword in Demon Slayer also has a historical precedent, although the actual "sword" would be more whip like, usually with multiple heads stemming off of the handle for easier use
It's called the Urumi and it'd require a ton of training before you'd be able to use it without hurting yourself, but it would technically be possible
