      For a shy Asperger's type guy, he sure seems to love the lime light and seems to have no anxiety or difficulty with speaking in public or in front of crowds (like his TED talk last year, although he seemed slightly nervous then).

      This podcast with lynsey dyer was great. She is a big mountain skiier so she doesn't have the same ignorant attitude as every other interviewer. She understands what its like to have people question your sanity and make stupid comments about you. Plus a podcast format is an infinitely better way of getting to know someone in contrast to a 5 minute quick fire interview.

    Purchased the movie and almost freaked out watching it at first but I was able to control myself finally realizing that he had to have achieved this monumental accolade or the movie wouldn’t have been made. He’s a down to earth individual who admits his flaws and follies and still able to remain humble and honest. Good for him.

  • @franzbeck3177
    @franzbeck3177 Před 5 lety +119

    this has to be the greatest thing a human has ever done. No profit, no gain, not doing it for attention or doing it to please others, Alex is literally living his life, just him and planet earth, nothing else but shoes and a bag of chalk. There the majority of us sit in an office thinking we are actually living life.....but in reality we are living within a manufactured living

    • @MrTobitobitobitobi
      @MrTobitobitobitobi Před 5 lety +4

      There are quite alot more significant things people have done for humanity so i wouldnt exactly phrase it like that. But it is for sure an incredible achievement even more in the eyes of people who dont climb for them it must look absolutely outrageous

    • @franzbeck3177
      @franzbeck3177 Před 5 lety +15

      people have done for humanity???? we are not talking about what people do for humanity, we are talking about a human doing something no other human has ever done in the history of mankind. what we see here is the pinnacle of human achievement and what is possible. Free soloing el capitan is something that could have been done ever since humans set foot on this planet.....but it was only achieved last year!!!!!!!!! Climbing Mount Everest can easily be done now by anyone with the cash to do so.....this however, money cant buy you this feat, hence why it is one of the greatest things a human has ever done.

      I've watched so many interviews with Alex and I'm absolutely captivated by him. If he was some meathead/daredevil type I'd probably just be sitting here like, you fucking idiot. I wouldn't be trying to find out more about him, in a way I wouldn't want to know more about him because of those risks, it's like, you don't want to get too invested in someone that's just throwing their life away. The fact that Alex has done this ridiculous thing, but that he still seems sane and thoughtful and like it's all carefully calculated and not just a stupid risk for attention/adrenaline really strikes something with me.

    I sky dive. When you exit the plane at ~12,500 feet you are so high that you lose height perspective altogether. It's is not like standing on the ledge of a rock cliff or looking out the window of a skyscraper, which is much closer to our height experience, and generates the visceral feelings you describe. Height is relative to one's frame of reference. Therefore, what Alex does is much different, to say the least, especially when free climbing. I know (thankfully) that Alex, survived his free solo ascent of El Capitan, which I can barely watch, yet I can sky dive with comfort, go figure.

    • @Biomirth
      @Biomirth Před 5 lety +4

      If every 100 feet down skydiving you had to make a difficult and highly technical physical move that, if you failed, would render your chute inoperable, then you'd be doing something similar. I'm not saying skydiving isn't rad. It is. It's just the technical aspect is so different.
