  • I apologize for the crappy audio. I accidently recorded with the wrong microphone. Doh!
A few weeks ago I took my second (or maybe my third) photo trip to Adams, Tennessee. (Be sure to stay until the end to see the black and white photographs of Adams Tennessee's derelict old downtown.)
Now you may be saying Adams Tennessee? Never heard of it, or why go there?
Maybe you've heard of Adams, or maybe not, but chances are you have heard of the Bell Witch. Just as a refresher, the Bell Witch is the supposedly true and verified story of one of America's first hauntings, and it happened here in Adams, which is about 45 minutes northeast of Nashville. There's a minor tourist industry around the legend now . . . a few of the family homes still stand and there's a replica of the old John Bell house and a "haunted cave" you can visit for a price.
But what fascinates me as a photographer about Adams, is its run-down and abandoned little downtown area. There's still a collection of old buildings here, all from the late 1800s, which are all rotting pretty badly. Now these buildings were built well after the Bell Witch, which took place 200 years ago in 1817. Adams was once a thriving little community but like a lot of towns, the railroads left and the Interstate highway bypassed it, and it began to wither away.
The old Methodist church is in really poor condition and seems to be getting worse. The first time I shot it, there was a mockingbird on the roof that was really groping at me for getting too close to her property.
This is the JE Winters Company Dry Goods building, built in 1897. This is the only building that seems to be getting attention. Before, the side of the building was really covered in ivy but now it's all cleared away. It was really beautiful with the ivy though.
