- Taken from an 8mm reel of a 1970 Holiday, here is the Bishop Rock lighthouse relief. Before automation, a hugely popular event was the Bishop Rock lighthouse relief. The keepers and supplies were manually hauled up and down 45ft to the set off. With thanks to the Callen family for this wonderful footage shot by Don Callen.
8mm professionally transferred by TVV Productions using high res, frame-by-frame scanning for the best possible results.

2:11 that young lady smiled right at me :o)
For once a video with the perfect music! I work in a marine environment and we have to use harness to climb just 5 meters! Health and safety gone mad.... theses were tough men!
Amazing video.
Fantastic some skills there to keep everyone safe, all those old people who were young then I hope you all had a good life its a bit sad as a lot of them will be gone now missed by there families but not forgotten
My dad was a Keeper the same time this was filmed. Served on the Bishop, Wolf, Longships, Eddystone and several more as did a 2x Great Uncle in the early 20th C. Would loved to have followed in their footprints, but automation beat me to it. Became a submariner instead!
Kev G I’d have loved to be a lighthouse keeper as well, not for family reasons though, I just love the idea of living and working on a lighthouse out in the middle of nowhere. I’d have liked the Bishop or Wolf or the Eddystone.
@cornskid
Me too!!
A beautiful piece of Industrial Age technology.
♥️ my heart is there 👍🏻🤝🏻
Amazing, thanks for sharing.
Brave men!
I went on a similar trip to this lighthouse around 1980, i don't think the men were winched onto the lighthouse just supplies. I loved the Scillies and that day was special.
Lighthouse keepers had (have) to be such a hardy breed of people. Personally, I think I would consider winching as above and beyond the call!
I was very interested in lighthouses in the 1970's. With the help of my late grandad we wrote to bishops rock lighthouse. We received a reply from a keeper called Brian. We exchanged letters for some time. If anyone can provide any information it would be amazing. Especially Kev G
Hi there is a channel here called "Peter Halil" who was a lighthouse keeper He often replies to comments and sure he would help you with your questions.
Carte Blanche
I would love to see a copy of the risk assessment.
They used the dynamic RA concept: Done in their heads on site each time, along with commentary-aided hoisting🤣
Is it more Westerly than Rockall?
No. Rockall is far further west, but is far further north too.
name of the song?
Veracocha - Carte Blanche (Lowland Classical Translation)
Why are there so many boats full of people 🤔
I would think it special trips out to Bishop Rock put on for visitors to watch a change over.
