Mario Tennis review. Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 developed by Camelot and published by Nintendo.
It's hard to remember a time before Mario sports games, but during the Nintendo 64 era, the concept was exciting and new. And the two earliest games proved Mario's natural athletic abilities. The first was Mario Golf, and a year later, it was Mario Tennis. This outstanding tennis game brought together the fun and simplicity of arcade sports games with the iconic characters of the Super Mario franchise. In retrospect, it's obvious. But in the year 2000, it was ingenious. Developed by Camelot, Mario Tennis is a simple tennis game packed with features. The gameplay is fast and accessible, offering up an impressive roster of 16 characters. That's only a few less than the GameCube sequel would have. The game offers several single-player modes, but like so many N64 classics, the real draw is its multiplayer. Mario Tennis supports two, three and four-player multiplayer with a variety of party-inducing modes. On a system known for great multiplayer, Mario Tennis fits right in.
This video review features video gameplay footage of Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek. - Hry
"First mario sports game!" Heh heh... The Virtual Boy would like to see you
Yes, but no one would like to see the Virtual boy.
Though there was NES open...
That luigi cry though.
Believe it or not, this game actually taught me how to play tennis before I was able to play it in P.E. at high school. :D
i know the mechanics are so deep for a mario game and they do it so well. brings back some good memories.
yo I know i didn't even know what tennis was before this game hahaha
lo i commented on your comment 1 year ago haha
Poor luigi.
You'd never know it just by looking at him, but Mario is an incredible athlete. He's the Pablo Sandoval of the video game world.
Welcome back CGR!
I'm sorry, Derek, but Mario was in sports games before he was in platformers. 1984's "Golf" featured Mario before "Super Mario Bros." even released. Not to mention "Pinball" which released even before "Golf".
Ahhh what a glorious day it is today! The return of CGR on youtube! WOOO!
I love seeing these videos in my subscriptions again. Nothing against the website, which I still visit, but as a mainly mobile user, it can be much easier to watch on here.
Welcome back to CZcams. ^^
Used to play this all the time 14 years ago.
These guys did such a wonderful job reviewing games. ... (Sigh).
20 years old now
Wow both CGR and Undertow is back, yeah im pretty stoked.
So are the reviews that went up to the website coming to CZcams sometime in the future?
Maio Tennis on N64 is surprisingly, by far, the most well polished Tennis game on any console in my experience.
So many intense 1 v 1 mario tennis matches with my friends. This game is crazy fun to play with people.
my favorite Mario sports game next to superstar baseball for the gamecube
Fun fact- Mario Tennis isn't the first game in the Mario Tennis series. The first game came out on the Virtual Boy. The game is known as Mario's Tennis. Source- I own a copy of Mario's Tennis and have played the everloving shit out of it.
Loardy, and Mario Tennis on the N64... That game is amazing. Got it from Club Nintendo last year. Worth the coins. Logged many hours into it
Mario Tennis is an excellent game, I love it. My friends and I still play it in the whitehouse
Did you ever play Bush?
X-Mas 2000, I remember this being my present. The ONLY good thing I got that year pretty much.
I wasn't surprised by the creation of Mario Golf. What surprised me is that they didn't do it sooner. I was already familiar with the concept due to NES Open Tournament Golf which featured Mario. I consider it related to the Mario Golf series. Nice touch with the old Conan O'Brien reference. Welcome back to youtube, though I watched this review on the video site that isn't youtube.
I'm usually not into sports games but Mario tennis is my guilty pleasure. It's so addicting.
Ya'll remember the other CGR U reviewer, GeneralLotz? Deeper voice, always ended his videos with "or whatever makes you happy?" He has a channel here on CZcams, and it is pretty high quality.
The nostalgia is real
Can someone give some insight on the controls...Holding A gives the power top spin shot but I have notice that pressing A twice also gives a power shot? Is it better to hold A or should I press A twice?
When I was a kid I didn't even use the 3rd or 4th controller ports, friends rarely went to my house (as opposed to now, where they flood it) and my dad was good, but not THAT good, and my mom liked watching me, because she became bored quickily, lol :)
(also, when a friend came to my house, it was da shit)
poor weegee :( great review derek!
my bro yoshi and me paratroopa we play this all the time back then vs the highest diff multiplayer i think like birdo and dk or somethin. I love this game. The mechanics are actually so deep too you can press alternate buttons like a and then b or b then a to do different tactics like lob and close net shots. really deep stuff for the time
Never knew Derek was so quick on his feet lol
I didn't even buy the wii until last year and it was used but only took me 2 months and wen out and bought the wii u and have already spent 6 hundred dollars since October of 2013 on the system plus games ..lol.
Wish they made a Mario Archery -_-
Baby Mario is an absolute beast in this game
No mention of this being the first appearance of Waluigi? Not a word about how his entire character was created because Wario needed a doubles partner?
powerpc127 deadset, didn’t know that aye. Cheers mate 👍🏻
Omg, the end with Luigi, hahaha.
I never expected you to look like you do. But hey, better than I expected
i'd tape that pirates hat too. LETS GO METS
That's a Memphis dingleberries hat
I wouldn't say Mario sports games stopped being good after the Gamecube era. We did get the awesome Mario Strikers Charged for the Wii. And Mario Golf: World Tour for the 3DS is actually pretty good too! But then again, there were quite a few disappointing titles since the days of the original Wii..
2:55 Waluigi is like "what the actual fuck?"
i never played this game but i did play lots of mario power tennis and if this is even close to mario power tennis then yeah its an amazing game.
Thats a cool looking n64, they have all the good shit back at their lair
They should make a Wii U or 3DS Mario Tennis that is kinda like that but also has the RPG mode of the GBC version.
YES! HE MENTIONED PERFECT DARK AND NOT JUST GOLDENEYE! :D
That Luigi is a bad loser
I want this game in the Wii U eShop, totally hyped for Ultra Smash!
Javier Peña It is now out!
He does not sound right to the way he looks but ok!
I missed the boat on the 64 I bought it late in its life and didn't really give it a chance because I found a game called age of empire on pc and didn't play the 64 after that
CGR and undertow are back in the same day. is it coincidence or ?
In the yeeeaaar two thouuusaaannnd!!
No one watching once you started uploaded to your site?
Glad to have you back.
The dude can ball!
So happy to see CGR back on the interwebtubes.
I thought for whatever reason this was actually filmed in the year 2000, I was like wow man you look the same you did 14 years ago lol. Was this or Mario golf Waluigi's first appearance?
Derek, I love you :)
whats the name of that intro song at the beginning? I like it 😊💃
This was another popular game me and the boys would play back in the day. We referred to it as warm up game. We would play this and a few other games like Rampage, Wave Racer and Excitebike 64 for about 30 mins each before we got to the bigger multiplayer games. This was mostly because we would get bored with it pretty quickly, not because it was bad but because it was there wasn't much to it. It was a case of quality over quantity.
And good to see you are reviewing things properly again Derek.
bigger multiplayer like?
You know. The classics we all know and love. Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, F-zero X, Super Smash Bros.
Jaeger Newman ye i was 10 yo when tennis came out, Goldeneye had a solid campaign too, hundred hours to 100%.
Much better then Virtual Boy Mario Tennis.
Great analysis this and Mario kart64 really classic video games
Is that the outside simulator 3000?
1:53 Oh boy, with those skills it is not looking good for the 2002 Soccer World Cup for Italy, Mario.
Cgr got handles 1:30
Its been too long cgr :)
Somehow I lost all of my data on this game. I’m sick to my stomach.
Lol I hae that Mario plush from the early 2000
again, like goes for gameplay footage and selected shown moments)
WELCOME BACK U LOVELY PEOPLE YOU!
I hope Derek is alive and well. I miss CGR Undertow :(
Hes somewhat active on twitter
Welcome Back Guys, its good to see you on my Subscription updates again.
Grow up, you childish little parasite.
twostinkyfingers It's pretty sad that this is how you spend your time. You could be doing something productive. You could be contributing to the world. Do you think you just have nothing to offer so this is the best you can do? Do you think this may as well be your lot in life? I think you can do better and actually spend your time in a worthwhile way. I'm not wrong to give you the benefit of the doubt, am I?
The Gameboy Color version was so much better.
Disagree about Smash 64 showing it's age. Its my favorite of the pre WIi U versions. I mean a game that you recommend heartily (goldeneye) shows its age far more than Smash 64.
I want to take mushrooms with derrick
Ahem you mean wwf no mercy
did no one liked super sluggers for the wii because i did.
Dude I still love it! Just played it the other day, and it was an absolute blast despite Luigi being robbed of two home runs.
Haha CGR videos just got better haha
Wow, Luigi is a really sore loser. You'd think he would be used to it by now.
year 2000? shouldn't you be look like a little boy Derek ):D
Haha! Battlefield Earth
Derek's Swag Basketball moves
i love you for saying mario tennis multiplayer is right up there with goldeneye. growing up with both and having played both during countless sleepovers, both games offered hours upon hours of nonstop fun. sure, goldeneye was a technical masterpiece for its time, but as far as fun factor goes, mario tennis is right up there as far as multiplayer madness goes (same with starfox, mario kart, and bomberman). So many fond memories
Explode 3:16
Damn, Derek has good ball handling skills lmao
oh Derek ive missed you
Automatic like.
Hope you guys are back for good....
DERRICK: I gotta tell ya. I'm really looking forward to "Battlefield Earth".
ME: And after he saw it, he was dead inside.
I had similar reactions when "Thomas and the Magic Railroad" came out. 3 year old me loved the shit outta that movie. 21 year old me rewatched it and wanted to die.
Dude, the voice does not match the face XD but still kickass intro
Hey Derek! your wearing a Pirates baseball cap, aren't you?
Why wear a hat that you're gonna have to put fucking DUCT TAPE over something?! ...in this case a shitty franchise's symbol
I remember game informer said this was about as good as tennis 2k2 in dreamcast but playing both this game controls really bad by comparison and not as good by a long stretch, like it is okay but if you had a dreamcast this Mario tennis is a major step down
I don't understand people who think the original Smash Bros. has aged poorly, or is the inferior entry. It's still my favorite by far.
Everything is subjective.
I like Mario Tennis
I wish Nintendo would bring n 64 games to the eshop
Welcome back to CZcams!!!!!!!! Dailymotion is for porn CGR, duh.
yay a review
Yet another review ruined by this guy.
This isn't funny.
N64 sucks.
does not
