- Experiencing unusually cold weather early January 2014 as over night temperatures dipped down into the single digits I and my fellow coworkers scattered around the county at 4AM cranking up the school busses to insure they did crank, and were warm for picking up the children during the Bus routes. It is unusual we have temperatures this cold around this part of the country, we wanted to make sure everything was up, running, and warm for the drivers, and passangers. I hope you enjoy the starts, included here in are International DT466, Maxforce 7, Cummins 5.9, andf 6.7, Mercedes Benz, and Caterpillar.

The sound of these buses starting up in the cold is awesome
got to love it when the drivers hide the keys lol
Awesome video! I ride a CE, love it very much. It's got the B6.7
this is amazing the buses started right up.
I live in north Alabama also and attend Madison county high school and rode a bus last year I understand how cold it was but want to thank all Madison county mechanics as wall as the drivers that did this because the bus was nice and warm when my classmates and I boarded the busses
Thank You!!!
I know it's not good for the 08 IC when it revs up high, but it really sounds nice!
I've been on so many IC buses those buses are so smooth when driving and cool looking
I like the way the international buses drive, and the drivers compartment. I especially like the fact that now they come Cummins equipped.
@@RedDodge1968 RIP DT466
I've been on blue bird buses as well they seem to run pretty well
Drove bus a few years in Grand Forks, ND and also in WI. Holy balls you have no idea. Those new Maxxforce engines are niiiiiice
4 years later
@@5.43v So nice they don't even make them any more, LOL
@@hlpools3303 LOL REALLY? GOOD! They need to make the dt466 again!
I had to rebuild ours at 180k
reddodge. love the freight liner
I am a new subscriber and I love school buses
I hope you cut the heat back on for the drivers and kids!
What is the newest bus you guys have in your systen
what a great video!.. do you guys drain all your air each night? seemed not a single bus had any air in it when you started them..
That is a scary high revv
benji rob lox its the radio for the drivers to talk about routes
Nice! I ride with Decatur CS in North AL. I take it your with Madison County? We have been having a pretty good year with our buses(Thomas C2s and a few FS65S). Most of ours are Cummins 6.7 and a few Mercedes Benz. This last cold freeze all but one started! And the one that didn't start had pre existing issues. How is the MF7? We usually request no V8s
I got to say I prefer the Cummins, we have had a few issues with the International's.
School bus driver here and drivers not turning off the heat, fans, and master switches is my biggest pet peeve especially when I have to go move their bus it’s obnoxious it takes a couple seconds to shut everything off I’ll never get it! 🤦🏻♀️
Cummins seems the best, our Mercedes drop valves and Internationals need a lot of work, they are nice when they run right though. Caterpillar have issues as well.
They all have their own issues, Cummins biggest draw back seems to be oil leaks, but by far I rather work on them. Cummins engines are laid out much nicer with the servicer in mind. Benz is a nightmare on some work.
RedDodge1968 well our oldest Cummins are 2009 so not that old, but they seem like solid motors minus turbos going bad. Every once in a while a International or Mercedes blows up with around 150k and both lose a lot of power around 100k so I think it's a wash. Caterpillar always have issues.
You don't need to pay extra labor to make sure vehicles will start on cold days

Hey bud great video. I loved it I have watched it through two times now. I am wondering if you have any other buses maybe you could start up in the daylight?
We have over 200 busses, normally I just work on them, but during these unusually cold mornings I and my fellow coworkers went out and cranked them up early for the drivers.
You think though you could do another round of cold starts then if you have some more brutal cold.
@Benji Roblox
It's the communications module.
What kind
He could turn on headlights on buses at night
the '09 bluebird is 750000 by now
2004 Bluebird Freightliner ???
What do you think of the INTERNATIONAL CARPENTER CE300 I like the way it rides.
AMTRAN WARD Carpenter Navistar
Why do some of those bus's buzzers change pitch when you turn the key to start it?
It is the electrical load of the grid heaters reducing battery voltage.
+RedDodge1968 what do you think of those 2008 Bluebird Visions? If you've driven them do you think they're pretty fast for a school bus?
The blue bird visions are available with a lot of different engine options. They are nice buses but I do not like the drivers compartment. The steering wheels are too small, and the drivers compartment is pretty cramped.
From what other drivers have told me the drivers compartment isn't meant for big people. No offense to anybody. You guys have any 2015/2016 models? Oh and a question do you think you could do a video on a 2008 Bluebird Vision? Like a test drive and review sort of thing? Nobody out there on CZcams seems to want to do a review walk around and test drive. Figured I'd ask you since you work at a bus fleet. RedDodge1968
BTW the Vision that you started in this video was using a Volvo designed steering wheel and speedometer. I like the 2008 to 2010 models for that reason particularly. I also like them because they are fast. Until 2014 came along. They dropped down to a max engine rpm of 2100 rpm. Go to *****'s channel and see his 2015 Bluebird Vision take off. It should have a name that says "148 - Take off (0-55)." The 2008-2010 models can go up to 2600 rpm. And that is what makes them a fast bus. Also it don't take much rpm to get the max torque out of the engine. 1600 rpm I do believe. RedDodge1968
Good video of the starting of the busies. Do you have to start up each bus every morning during the winter like early morning to get the busies all warmed up.? And how loud do the engines get after each and every bus is running.?
Generally only in cases of extreme cold. Some of the engines can be quite noisy when it's really cold.
It looked like at least one bus had a pressure gauge for an air tank, so I'm guessing at least a few run air brakes. Did any of them get their tanks bled to remove water before the freeze? And did you run into any air line issues?
In our system drivers are required to bleed the air system down before leaving the bus after their route but they don't do this via the drain valves on the tanks. We rarely have issues with moisture in the systems, even with the humidity in the area the air driers, seem to do their job.
All of our buses are air brake
+RedDodge1968 what’s the difference between glow plugs and a grid heater?
Glow plugs usually go into the cylinder, and there is one for each cylinder, the grid heater is in the intake, and heats the air before entering the engine.
RedDodge1968 don’t the buses have Engine Block Heaters?
Many of them do, but where they are sitting there is no where to plug them up.
You really got one with the new Max Force? Those are the worst engines since the 6.4 Powerstrokes.
Same block?
@@5.43v Possibly about the same damn engine, but I think it probably has an inline maxxforce and not the VT series.
David Devine yes. There are a few small differences but it’s basically the same motor as the 6.4 pile of shit
11:25 what happened there
4:53 Thomas chime
I wonder if all the mechanics had to shut off all the engines when they were done cranking up the buses that sure looks fun to cold start a bus though
They keep them running till it's pick up time to get the heat going. No purpose to start them up then just shut them right back down.
What's the sound at 3:04 in the bus when he powers up the bus?
Benji Roblox it’s the cb radio
its the CB radio
Your 4bt sure fired right up!! Where/how did you find your 4bt?
The 4BT always fires right up, it has been a very reliable engine, been running it since Sept. 09. I placed an add on Craigslist that I was looking for one and a fellow down south of me called me.
RedDodge1968 Thanks! If I could ask, was yours from a bread truck? What was the engine history? Thanks again!!
akennyd The engine was from a potatoe chip truck, I really don't know much of it's history, appeared to be in good condition, and has preformed well over the past 4 years, even logging a 1250 mile one way trip out west over the summer pulling a trailer.
Thanks again for the info. I am looking for a 4bt to put in an older jeep that I have. I hope you continue to have good success with yours and hope I can find one as good as yours as it will be a daily driver for me.
I wish this driver had the key I'll be back when I find the key 2:50
That bus is my favorite.
how my fans on my bus I ride a 2000 bluebird and full leds with crossing gate my next bus ill be riding a 2016 ic ce 300
That 01 blue bird is it a tc2000 or an all American
more likely a 2005 all American. 1999 thru 2001 TC-2000s had different gauges.

Do you still work with buses
Yes I do.
Can you do another bus video maby like a update and tour
I’m actually at a different system now, since this video was made. Recently uploaded a Cummins oil leak repair on a bus.

Uhh School Bus Has Brand Volvo FH
IC CE's suck! It's all about the Thomas C2's with 6.7 cummins and the DD5's.
Women drivers and them fans!
You got it, but I see a lot of male drivers that don't know how to turn off accessories either.
Yes I am. I am thinking about doing videos of me and my team working on them.@Dustin Lanphear
