      As a young African, two years ago I made a decision to join politics and what I discovered was truly very depressing. I realized that the crisis of leadership in Africa was more cultural and pervasive than I thought, basically as African societies we vote for bad leadership because essentially the society is corrupt and lacks fundamental value systems that are necessary to create good leadership. So the leaders are simply of the same cloth from which society is made of. We are cut from the same tree. Poverty, dearth of leadership seems so pronounced in black societies than anywhere else, I suspect it has a lot to do with sub-cultures that foster these cycles.

      every nation rn is guilty of that. The issue right now we are seeing across the world is the end of the old generation grip on power. They Brought us into the 21st century but they were a stop gap for where we needed to be. They were all rhetoric until it became too inconvenient, and now it is just easier and better for their cause to pull us back or break it in general. We need actual doers, ppl who actually want to uphold the ideal that strive toward but at the same time we need to beat the ppl who are ok with holding onto the old ways so badly that they want to take us back.
      The fight against conservatives that turned into regressionists (or even worsts fascists) and understanding the failure of old school liberals who were the compromise to progressives. That is the fight we are globally having rn.
      If you want to look at South Africa (as that is lens of this video) that party sold the indigenous africans the dream of right to self determination, they had the ideals and even a plan, but ultimately they needed to not only educate the ppl, build an economic structure that benefitted them locally and on a global scale but also wrestle the constant fight against old regime that still maintained influence and monetary power. And eventually they hit a wall. It is time for new blood to come in, the new generation but also integrate white afrikans that have lived alongside indigenous ppl that actually want to help and not just benefit the old school segregationists that will take advantage of indigenous ppl again. It is a balancing act. it's about incremental change but I could be off base there.

    I am a young African who aspired to join politics some two years back. What I observed and learned was disheartening. I had to admit to myself that for some odd reason, African societies lack basic value systems that make good leaders. African societies make it possible, by both lack and design, that bad leadership proliferates more than good one. Basically African leaders are a sample of its own society, inept, corrupt and lacking basic vision for collective good.

      @BTL_LTW It's not about picking sides, it's an observation I have of my own society and it's ineptitude. In my own country my peers and I are beginning to talk about these issues and it's good because atleast instead of petty victim politics that portrays Africa a a victim of prejudice and neocolonialsim we see ourselves in our true colors.

    • @BTL_LTW
      @BTL_LTW Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@kabelontitsane4943 And what color is that? What do you propose? Take your sentiment to its logical conclusion. Do you think the “neocolonialism isn’t the reason why Africa or said country is poor” narrative is something new? Some enlightened thought from “free thinkers”? Try reading up on your own history, that narrative is as old as colonialism itself, and is of course proposed and encouraged by the very people who benefit from colonialism the most… This is one of the issues with African education prioritizing STEM and having little to no emphasis on history or social sciences - it results in the “why” being defined by the people with incentives to control you.

    • @kabelontitsane4943
      @kabelontitsane4943 Před 5 měsíci

      @BTL_LTW There is a tendency by contemporary African political opinion makers especially with a Pan African ideological leanings that all or a majority of African problems can be summed up in one word, Colonialism. It's a highly ignorant view that whitewashes African history, glamorizing it to shore up arguments that Africa was led to fail. I implore you to read, not a romanticized history of African Politics, go to the numbers, the policies and their results. We talk of men like Kwameh Nkrumah, Patrice Lumumba, Houphouet Boigny, Modibo Keita and others with a poetic reverence as if they were some geniuses who were robbed of a vision they had for Africa. For the most part, if you follow their politics, their policies and their effects, these men were mostly grossly incompetent and inept. Few men had their hearts in the right place except they were still incompetent anyway, people like Julius Nyerere. Some capable leaders who did relatively good were Seretse Khama of Botswana. There is a tendency in people to glamorize the past more than the present, that's what most Africans have done with their history.
      But to Africa's credit, during the 50s and 60s decades of independence the concept of modern states was largely foreign, we were expected to do so much with very little. The Colonial masters did not rule Africans to develop Africans. But we were no more disadvantaged at independence than other countries with similar socio-economic problems like Singapore, Malaysia, Korea and others.

Hès correct obviously about the corruption and systemic issues with the ANC but his solution was so counterproductive and tbh historically/racially and politically tactless that he also deserves the ridicule and criticisms he has received especially from Black South Africans. Independence of WC is a low probability but more importantly reinforces the cultural divide between WC and the rest of ANC controlled provinces. But play out, if independence is declared and held...central govt funding immediately stops, new infrastructure requirements for energy, home affairs, etc needed, more housing demand for inevitable immigration to WC, new police force and army, trade deals need to be struck (think Brexit)...so almost immediately there needs to be huge injection of cash just to get the govt up and running. Two sources: Tax and borrowing. not great options esp the latter if borrowing is written off by country lender but at cost that bites you in the butt down the line.
      My view: rally the younger voters at university to get out an vote, make meaningful changes in WC for poorer communities (get rid of the townships in CT for example and build proper homes, improve education and health facilities or at least have an executable plan for it) to show intent for rest of country, tax wealth on the richest 15% to fund these changes and have a zero policy of corruption (yes WC has corruption too). Open your eyes this isn't news it's straight propaganda designed to destroy South Africa's reputation. The timing of this video is INCREDIBLY suspicious. I don't believe in coincidences. Of ALL the times TLDR could have decided to make this video they just HAPPEN to decide to put this out right as the ICJ is about to make an incredibly important interim decision on Israel's Genocide of the Palestinian people, 30,000+ civilians have been blown to pieces, 80% of whom are women and children, they are being starved to death, denied clean drinking water, medicine and basic humanitarian aid, over 100+ journalists have been deliberately targeted and killed. The timing of this video is BLATANTLY obvious. The blood is on the hands of these propagandists as well. They're literally trying to manipulate the public's perception (i.e, you!) so that not if but WHEN the ICJ rules that Israel is guilty of committing an active genocide in Gaza they can point the finger at South Africa and call them a failed state or whatever else they can think of to attack them.

      The reason is that the ANC started as a communist terrorist organization funded by the Soviets and supported by Cuba. Like all nations run by communists, it resulted in misery for the vast majority of the people and big offshore bank accounts for the rulers.

    Corrections:
    1. Arms deal was not during the Apartheid era, it was after apartheid formally ended.
    2. The factionalism was between Zuma and Mbeki's factions unless you're arguing that Mbeki was a continuation of Mandela which is not a credible claim.
    3. I would have used the term failing or floundering since I'm not sure South Africa meets the international defintion of Failed State but there are academics who argue that South Africa has always been a failed state. Might have been useful to give a definition and threshold of what a failed state is. South Africa still has credible elections, an independent judiciary and central bank, and broad respect for human rights by the state which I do not think a failed State has.
    4. The claim on preference for a dictator comes from a dubious poll given the way that the question in that poll was asked (assuming you're using the poll by the SRF).
    Great pronounciation of Steenhuisen, I'm impressed.

      Before a democracy has a good chance of working, you need a country with a stable rule of law. If a "benevolent" dictator could achieve that, that would not be the worst solution as a step towards a functioning democracy. The problem is that dictators usually are not very benevolent and even if they start out with good intentions, they usually become corrupt within a few years.
      Examples where it sort of worked are Singapore, Taiwan, and I think also South Korea.

      @ronald3836 sure, I am not saying it couldn't work. I am saying that giving up your democracy in the hopes you'll get it back is just crazy and a horrible idea. Why not vote the president you'd like instead of hoping he can get to power?

      @@joelimbergamo639 Agreed, but I guess they don't see any suitable candidate, so they dream of a non-existing hypothetical dictator who fixes everything.
      Maybe it is a lack of education, maybe it is a sign of desperation.
