Yang Hyun-suk from Seo Taiji and Boys is the guy who started YG Entertainment. So you have him to thank for Big Bang, Winner, IKON, Treasure, 2NE1, BlackPink, etc... YG Entertainment is also where PSY and EPIK HIGH got their starts.
Fly to the Sky is a duo, although initially marketed as KPOP Idols, they kind of graduated to a more mature sound and are one of the most popular R&B groups in SK. They've put out 9 studio albums since 1999. Although they haven't released an album since 2014, according to Wikipedia they are still active.

What a blast from the past! I came to teach English in Korea in 1999 and was blown away by these first generation K-pop groups at the time! Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Had to stop everything I was doing as soon as I read the title 😱 Yaaaaas, I'm living for these 1st and 2nd Gen reactions 😭
Edit: Seotaiji & The Boys are living legends, they made a whole revolution in Korean music industry when they first started. They were the once who started all this kpop industry (even tho back in the days it was not yet kpop). Many 1st gen groups emerged after Seotaiji's success)) Also, that one member in red shirt is the founder of YG entertainment and creator of such groups as Big Bang, 2ne1, BlackPink and etc.
Shinhwa were created by SM (Aespa, NCT, EXO, Girls' Generation and many more). Shinhwa left SM after 5 years when their contracts ended, but they were able to keep their name to themselves. They are still going strong even today. Tho they are primarily focused on solo activities, they do release music as group once in a while. I suggest to listen to Venus, This Love and Sniper.
As you noticed Fly to the Sky were also created by SM, they were a duet)) and if I'm not mistaken one of the members Brian Joo is Korean American 🤔
There are more 1st gen groups you can checkout: H.O.T (SM), Scheskies, G.O.D (JYP), and S.E.S (SM) and Finkl for girl groups))

Thank you for clarifying to Pagan & everyone else that Seo Taiji is not KPop, because it was not KPop yet as you said. I have also been saying that for years. He only was the influence, impetus, inspiration & design template of what KPop was to become. That means he is not first generation KPop, because he is not KPop at all. It wasn't only him that was influential, but he was the primarily influence. Other influences came from Lee Sooman, J-Pop, Japanese early 20th century colonial rule & also that Korea had already been listening to western music since at least the mid 19th century. This includes Korean Trot music, which is traced backed to the United States. All of that finally culminated into what became KPop, but with Seo Taiji as the catalyst. I think a lot of KPop fans do not realize that KPop, aka idol industry, is not inherently Korean. Even the word "idol" in this context is not really Korean. That really goes back to the days of when Frank Sinatra was an idol. And something else that KPop fans do not realize is that the big irony of KPop is that its sound became more pop, hiphop & R&B rather than rock & metal music, which is what could have happened, but it did not.

I loved your reaction. Even though my favorite gen is 2nd gen I do really love 1st gen as well. And to answer your question about Turbo at the time of Black Cat Nero they were a duo, but they later became a trio. I am glad that is the dong of theirs you reacted to cause that is one of my top 1st gen songs.

This was fascinating and a blast from my childhood, for sure! Not that I was listening to Korean groups back then 'cause CZcams wasn't a thing, 2008/2009 2nd gen artists were my first intro. But you can definitely see the similarities with the US pop, RnB and rap of that era. I think @jbug1500 may be right with the Beastie Boys mention. Or other bands of that ilk. Thanks for the reaction Pagan 😊 Would love to see more from this period. Maybe even a dive into the performance style differences you see between 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen could be interesting 🤔?

Such a nostalgic trip. I started listening to kpop in 2007, so i grew up with 2nd gen groups, but i have listened to 1st gen groups, and technically i started with a 1st gen solo artist, BoA. Turbo and Shinhwa are still technically active. Turbo came back with a song called "Again" about several years ago, it was the first comeback as a whole group after 10 years i think. And during the time they were active in the 90's, they were only a 2 member group, the rapper was the one who changed half way through. And their new song "Again" has all 3 of them. The only one who has remained active throughout the years was the vocalist, Kim Jong Kook, who has done work as a soloist, he is an incredible vocalist, does mainly ballads.
Shinhwa i think is on hiatus right now, but few years back i think they released the song "This Love" and "Venus", and yes, they still look good to this day, and all of them are like in their late 40s early 50s right now.
Fly to the Sky is a 2 person group, mainly ballads, used to listen to their songs a lot, should check out some of their other songs too.
Seotaiji and the boys, iconic group, they are pretty much considered the creators of kpop, without them, there wouldnt be groups like Turbo, Shinhwa, H.O.T, G.O.D, SES, SNSD, Shinee, Big Bang, Super Junior, all the way to BTS.

1990-2010 is called the 'Renaissance Era' of the Korean music scene.
Currently, KPOP is dominated by idol music, but
In the past, in 1990, various genres took turns taking first place in the music world at the same time, and it was an era when all the people enjoyed and loved various genres.
The characteristics of the first-generation k-pop groups were also the era of 'mixed groups' that included both men and women.
For k-pop in the past, it is recommended to watch live stage videos rather than MVs. MVs from the early 2000s are not of very good quality.
For the best of the mixed group, we recommend 'Lula' and 'KOYOTE'.
We recommend watching the live stage video.
The world of K-POP is very wide and deep.

OK. Time for a Korean pronunciation tip! Whenever you see the letters "eo" together, you need to think of that combo as a single letter that sort of rhymes with the O in 'pot'. It's a blend of 'uh' and 'oh'. To make the sound of ‘eo’ you open your mouth to say uh but say oh instead without changing the shape of your mouth. Easy!
We do not have this letter in the Roman alphabet, so to represent it we use the 'eo' combo.
It is pronounced this way every time - just like it is in Kim Seok-jin or Jung Ho-seok. Korean family names are one syllable (mostly). So the name Seo is one syllable. The full name is not pronounced "SEE-oh TA-jee" but "suh-teh-jee". The emphasis is on the first syllable like in the word 'recipe'.
I hope this helps! Seo always throws people off but now you will sound like a native! 🤗
