He was still playing with Hawkwind when he wrote it and he used it as the name for his new band after he was kicked out of Hawkwind.

I was out in the hallway on a gurney, and the nurse didn't hear me. So I pulled out my Kindle, round CZcams, cranked it up ALL THE WAY and started playing "Killed By Death". The nurse RAN over, saying " YOU CAN'T DO THAT HERE", so I turned it down, apologized, and asked how else I could have gotten help, with no call button. She apologized and said that she would be back in two minutes. The band has as very unapologetic about who and what they were. They started all their shows with "WE ARE MOTORHEAD, AND WE PLAY ROCK SND ROLL". And so they did, for almost 40 years.
