  • The last living prosecutor of the Nuremberg Trials passes the torch to this generation. TEDxTeen opening music by Madijuwon. Benjamin B. Ferencz was born in Transylvania in 1920 and moved to America when he was ten months old. After he graduated from Harvard Law School in 1943, he enlisted in the army. Under General Patton, Ferencz fought in every major battle of the war. He was later transferred to a newly created War Crimes Branch to gather evidence of Nazi brutality. When the war was over, Ferencz returned to New York and was subsequently recruited for the Nuremberg war crimes trials. Ferencz was named Chief Prosecutor for the United States in the Nuremberg "Einsatzgruppen Case." Twenty-two defendants were charged with murdering over a million people. Ferencz was 27-years-old and it was his first case. He then played a key role in negotiating and implementing German agreements to compensate victims of Nazi persecution. Since then, Ferencz has devoted his life to studying and writing about world peace and replacing the “rule of force with the rule of law." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    I called him up tonight and wished him happy holidays - I was shocked he answered the number I had found- he was gracious and touched that a complete stranger would reach out. We spoke about his late wife, the Nazis, the world today, and CoVid, and he was of course, a total gentleman. I thanked him for all he's done to inspire so many and for all he's accomplished , and I meant every word of it. One of my few heroes in life.

      It's kinda weird feeling that a chief prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials is still among us.
      In Germany there are still trials against former SS men. They usually get prosecuted and sentenced as minors, since they were under twenty-one at the time of service. But they are small "characters" compared to Ferencz.
      Except for maybe Oskar Gröning the _"bookkeeper of Auschwitz"._

    Why isn't this video getting more hits? In seventeen minutes, this amazing man gives more wisdom and insight than a hundred other similar videos on CZcams put together. Not only does he talk about the Nuremberg trials, but in the last five minutes he vastly expands on his perspective on the future of humanity.

    • @ryancarper595
      @ryancarper595 Před 2 lety +2

      "he vastly expands on his perspective on the future of humanity" that is probably why. People are more interested in money today than anything else - also the reason why after 80 odd years he is still working to make people accountable for their actions. It obviously isnt easy work.

      He's a lawyer, not a politician.
      People tend to make such statements about very old people. Here in Germany everybody wished Helmut Schmidt should be chancellor, when he was in his mid-ninetees.
      He wasn't that popular while he actually was the chancellor. He was only able to lead the gouvernement because of a coalition with the FDP. The other big party in Germany, the Christian Democrats, always had more votes and seats in the parliament than Schmidt's party, the Social Democrats.

    The problem is there has never been a real place to bring disputes where people can negotiate a resolution that everyone is happy with. We have the united nations what happens there example Annexation of Crimea did the people who lived there have a voice? The UN could have held elections to see if they wanted to be part of Russia, but Russia won't allow it. Humans will never be able to live with one another until we learn to agree on a system to resolve disputes in the world. Now were reduced to only keeping the peace by pointing Nuclear weapons at one another which is a very dangerous game.
