Met Ritchie at the Paris concert in 1982
Told him: "you are the greatest guitarist in the world !"
He said: "I know !" while signing my ticket
Ritchie is known for being arrogant.
@@markhaus2830 He has a very dry sense of humour, often self-deprecating.
That is Ritchie To a tee lol
@@markhaus2830 no is he isn't, as he is is literally the one of the most innovative, influential, melodic and technically polished guitar players in the whole heavy / hard / classic rock era ... he could play anything ... hard rock, medieval, middle eastern, jazz fusion / rock, etc, etc ... top of the crop. That was probably not arrogance but his, fully introvert, sense of humour
Lucky he even spoke to you
I love that you're following your curiosity.
This was the tiem when the former Deep Purple was split into Rainbow and Whitesnake. You had Ritchie and Roger in this lineup, and Coverdale/Paice/Lord in Whitesnake. Turner also sang on a Deep Purple album in 1991 after Yngwie. So many connections between these groups.
Another Rainbow song is on Yngwie's "Inspiration", "Gates of Babylon" from their third album with Dio.
More Rainbow.... nice!!!
AWESOME guitar solo! Blackmore rules forever!
Good choice and I one I haven't listened to for a while. I've always thought of this track as the 80's Rainbow version of DP's "Highway Star."
Nick, great to see you doing some more Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore has always been my favorite guitarist.
You said something very important after the guitar solo on Stone Cold. You said it was such a beautiful solo & it just goes to show, you don't always have to play fast, play with feeling. And that is the difference between Blackmore & Yngwie Malmsteen,
Malmsteen plays every thing fast, even when he's playing the blues, he's flying up & down the neck & it makes all his leads sound the same.
But I would welcome more Rainbow, obviously one of my favorites.
Rainbow has had now with the last lineup, 5 different singers, all of them are great singers. Here's some ideas for more Rainbow with each singer he's out studio albums out with.
Ronnie James Dio
If you haven't hit Stargazer yet that should be next.
Kill the King
Gates of Babylon
Catch the Rainbow (another beautiful song)
Graham Bonnet
Eyes of the World
Love's no friend
Joe Lynn Turner
Spotlight Kid
Jealous Lover
Street of Dreams
Doogie White
Wolf to the moon
Hall of the Mountain King
Ariel
Ronnie Romaro is the latest singer.
Also Nick you mentioned the Malmsteen Inspiration album, it's Mistreated on there not Miss Mistreated. Mistreated is a song Blackmore originally did with Deep Purple ( wich you should really listen to that , fine blues leads that build up towards the end of the song) he also did it with Rainbow.
Hi Nick , Rainbow ! Yipee ! Lol ... I have every album by Rainbow and I saw them twice live with James Dio on vocals. I consider it a privilege to have witnessed them live with Dio. Unforgettable performances. Richie Blackmore plays faster live. He extends his solos and will even slow suddenly, stop all distortion and play clean classical before hitting a switch and on goes the power chords. Like you said Nick, he doesn't need to shred with his many solos, he is liken to David Gilmore who's greatest guitar solos have no shredding. Even playing at high speed Richie still makes every note appear and not lost in the mayhem. That is some skill. His slow ballads are an absolute dream to hear. So beautiful. He & Gilmore can touch your heart with notes to caress your ears. If you ever get the chance with Dio on vocals then "Catch The Rainbow" from the debut album is stunningly beautiful and Richie's solo will reduce you to tears. Slow melodic utter bliss by Richie. Byee ! Jim X
What Jim said..... good post.
I would argue that the LIVE version of Catch the Rainbow on the live album "On Stage", or the DVD "Live in Munich 1977" version to SEE them do it, because its turned into an EPIC, and features Dio in all his glorious vocal abilities and emotions . . . . I think it would tear-up Nick and/or Lexi.
@@mvunit3 Live Rainbow especially with Dio is amazing but I do know they prefer if possible to hear studio tracks first. I agree with you ... but I also want to get them to hear Deep Purple's "Mistreated" ...so they can then hear Dio with Rainbow doing it live. Being Richie's song he didn't need permission to use it with his band. The studio version with Coverdale is superb but Dio takes it to another level ...as does Richie. That + "Catch The Rainbow" is going to eventually stun their perception of rock music. Lol
@@jimled50jl49 I get you ;).
I love Joe Lynn Turner but Dio is just a force of nature. His vocals in Rainbow's Stargazer is just amazing. The Man on the Silver Mountain is another good one and so is Kill the King.
Monumental 🎸🎸🎸🎤🎤🎶🎶🎶👌👌👌💥💥💥💥
Sir Nick.. You can never go wrong with Rainbow and Ritchie Blackmore. Saw Ritchie & Rainbow in the FRONT ROW back In the early 1980's and my hearing hasn't been the same since then. But it was well worth it! AMAZING SHOW!!!
I agree with BMac, I definitely hear hints of "Highway Star". I'm loving the Rainbow requests, definitely a gateway band to future metal bands and artists. I prefer the Dio days of Rainbow for sure, but Turner and Bonnett we're nothing short of amazing as well. We should definitely keep the Rainbow train going!
Don't forget about Doogie White, pretty damn good. Does a great live version on the their classic Dio track .... "Temple of the King". Blackmore ramped it a little faster for the concert it sounds great. Other great Doogie songs are "Ariel" & "Hunting Humans". Worth a listen.
@@jalkabre5904 thanks for the reminder dude! I did forget about Doogie! 🤘✌️🤘
Actually this was just me doing a marathon. It wasn't a request hehe 😃
@@NicknLex that's awesome dude! Well I must say this is a most excellent marathon. I would recommend doing a marathon based on Black Sabbath's Master of Reality album from 1971. Or even better maybe a future full album listen. Just a friendly suggestion my friend 🤘✌️🤘
@@greybeard2280 hey great idea!! Thanks 👍
Wolf To The Moon
Enormissime Blackmore 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👌👍
You made a good choice here. Spotlight Kid is another album opener in a similar style that was created with the opening of live shows in mind. From the Graham Bonnet era I would recommend Lost in Hollywood as a complete Rainbow package in four minutes, and Black Masquerade from the album with Doogie White. I think Blackmore's fastest playing was probably from the late 1960's when he was still using an ES335. The footage of Wring That Neck from Bilzen shows he was probably far ahead of what any other rock guitar player was doing at the time. But the real key to what Blackmore does is his phrasing and syncopation, rather than being able to play with metronomic precision, and I don't think anyone has a better touch on the strings.
Spotlight Kid is my all time FAVE Joe Lynn Turner era Track. Thos various riffs and hooks from Blackmore, and the super cool keyboard solo and sound from Don Airey (back when, sadly . . . keyboardists couldn't duplicate those original sounds live on stage :p).
This was the first album I ever bought! I will never forget hearing both of these songs on MTV and being blown away. Back in the day, at the top of the hour, they would announce 3 bands they would play within the next hour, and no one was played more than every two hours. I was glued to the TV when they announced Rainbow!
I'm so glad you're listening to them, I recommend Eyes of Fire. Great "mood" song, brilliant feel and amazing guitar work. One of my favorite solos on this album is "Tite Squeeze," even though it's very short it's just SO COOL!
Stone Cold. One of my favorite songs ever. Gives me chills.
Dio will ALWAYS be the best to me but JLT was awesome! FYI, he put out at least one solo album between Rainbow and Yngwie. He has also recorded lead vocals for one Deep Purple album. And don't snooze on his first album with Rainbow, "Difficult to Cure." The standout track on that one is "Can't Get No Release."
God bless!!
My favorite Rainbow album and on my top 10 list, I was in 10th grade and this was my first taste of Rainbow, I also appreciate the Dio days but this was my first. This song and Eyes of Fire take me right back
Nobody does guitar outros like Ritchie (Stone Cold). I remember seeing him (a few hour after I’d got JLT and Roger Glover’s autograph) play out I surrender, and he was in the zone. It went on for about 3 minutes, total improv yet totally fluid.
Try "Eyes Of The World" from the Rainbow "Down To Earth" album featuring Graham Bonnet on vocals.
Parts of this actually remind of DP's Highway Star. When Turner is singing 'Death Valley Driver' the music sounds similar to when Gillian sings 'all right, hold tight, I'm a Highway Star'.
Since he composed both I guess he wanted to write something like highway star again?
Yes definitely!
My thoughts exactly.
Nick, for a tasty solo like you were describing check out the 1977 live Munich concert for the song called "Mistreated". It is a slow and magical solo. However from the same concert, the solo for the song "Catch the Rainbow" has a mixture of soft and hard..... it is so good. I would listen to both these songs. What a concert.
I agree and have suggested this before. Also Mistreated has the greatest Dio performance ever!
Stone Cold was a hit on Detroit radio at the time. A more commercial feel (WRIF The Home of Rock and Roll), the kind of metal that chicks would dig.
I agree with the comments about that first track it definitely reminded me of That driving rhythm from Highway Star. I learned something today because I always thought that 2nd cut was from foreigner. Shows what I know 😱. I was super busy in college at this time and down the rabbit hole with jazz and fusion. It’s nice to learn new things. great reaction.
Nick........Deep Purple Bass Player Roger Glover is also in the band on this album. He was in Rainbow for a few albums. Roger also did some production work.
Death Alley Driver is one of my favorites
Ritchie plays pretty fast on DP's 'Burn' on the title track.
Also, FYI - Mistreated by Malmsteen was a Deep Purple cover, not the same as Miss Mistreated by Rainbow. 😉
Jeff Scott Soto (Sons Of Apollo) sings on Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force. JLT joined about 5 years later for Live In Leningrad in 1989.
He means the album "Odyssey" 1988 by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rissing Force (that was the title of the band) with J L Turner on Vocals.
You have to try Rainbow "you're tearing out my heart". Excellent JLT vocals
Tearing out my heart live is better..
Excellent guitar solo
Indeed lots had happened, and Ritchie was obviously influenced - well not influenced as much as egged on - by what Yngwie was doing here.
I love the dry mix, and the total kickass feel!
Saw them on the tour for this album 7 rows from the stage all I heard for a couple of days was guitar it was awesome Scorpions opened the show Phila. Pa. Spectrum and my shirt looks just like the cover PS if you search it up there is a full video of this concert.
Had this on 8-track.
I still prefer the original Highway Star. I also hear a lot of Foreigner's 'Waiting for a Girl Like You', in the verse of 'So Cold' and "Head Games' in the chorus. Maybe just me. Nice vocals though.
Oh my goodness, the beginning of the second song reminds me of Alan Parsons 'What Goes Up'...just the beginning chords.
That's a damn good call. I've heard both songs for forty years and never put that together.
I've always loved that song Stone Cold. Remember the video and song well from early MTV.
One of the things I admire the most about Ritchie Blackmore, besides the awesome guitar playing, is his ability to attract talent. Every time people thought the band was done he would come out with the next great singer. Even in recent time with Ronnie Romero.
Ritchie Blackmore enormisdime guitariste il fait chanter sa guitare comme personne 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏💥💥💥
Stone Cold is one of my favorite songs. Thanks Nick!
Maravillosa formacion...
Por siempre Rainbow.....
I loved this album and Joe Lynn Taylor is my favorite Rainbow singer!
I enjoy your reactions, Nick though one recommendation I will give you is less talk during the song and more before and in between songs when you do more than one. Ritchie is living on Long Island, NY now doing mostly old English, Middle Ages type of music.
Thanks for the feedback. I just have to pause the video and talk otherwise the record company could take the video down. It's really up to them. I'll do my best
Love your content
What tha'!? . . .
So this is a surprise going to the Joe Lynn Turner era on his "2nd" album with Rainbow.
"Death Alley Driver" is my fave track on the album. As a young man I thought this was yet another "Car" story, but as the lyrics convey . . .
"Running all the red lites
Riding the _white lines_
Your gonna make a dead stop
But you just can't see the signs
Oh - you'll never win the race
But you can't give up the chase
Running from the man... and you're running
From yourself
Another dirty angel heading straight to hell"
I used to create that "Engine" roar/rev on a Korg Guitar Processor and other weird noises in stereo with a friends stereo amp. Was a lot of fun programming my own sounds. But that _Keyboard Solo_ from the then member "Kevin Rosenthal" (he looked like he could have been "Kevin Moore's" older brother, from Dream Theater years later), fantastic unique sounds!
"Stone Cold" (nickisms) was a great power ballad . . . something Dio wouldn't be caught dead doing, unless it had a baroque spin to it. My other fave though would be the closer "Eyes of Fire", which is a mini-epic complete with orchestration!
The previous album "Difficult to Cure" though is the _strongest_ of the 3 albums with Joe Lynn Turner, and was the last album with the previous albums I sent you, as I thought the Dio, Bonnet, Joe albums were the prime years of Rainbow.
Better late than never with Rainbow Nick, you have LOTS to discover. Wait till you see ALL the LIVE videos from Dio, Bonnet (at Castle Donnington Speedway/Monsters of Rock I) and Joe. The stage presence of the band and Blackmore are taken to another level. Dio will always be my fave (the way he pronounced and annunciated words), but Bonnet had an unusual voice (and "look"), but it was VERY powerful in his younger days.
If you look at your Book "Rock Family Tree's" by Pete Frame, you'll see the insane "Deep Purple Family Tree" and all its branches, its very interesting :).
*Hair Jell*
As a man who still has all my hair, and being semi-long and curly . . . NO JELL IN THE HAIR! Nope! 🤣 That would be gross 😛. I came for the hair Nick, not the music, so please another 20min. of dry hair and what you use😅.
#nicknlexrequest
Some Bonnet era suggestions (faves in order):
Lost in Hollywood
Danger Zone
Makin' Love
Eyes of the World
All Night Long
Since you've been gone
If you ever get to "See" it, the Tour for "Down To Earth" from the Monsters of Rock Festival - as was said in my "essay"/Blog that I linked, it was excerpts I saw on a late nite Rock show called "Rock World" in 1981 that made me an instant Rainbow fan because of Blackmore's persona (and Bonnet's vocals, stage presence), and how he was "somewhere else" when he improvised solos, and his "Sound Effects Solo" which is insane and jaw-dropping (to some it was incoherent noise . . . but "I got it", it had a story, he made his guitar cry in pain, mesmerize the audience, and there was control in the chaos).
Again, for anyone interested, my essay link on a particular subject and my story with Deep Purple and Rainbow:
mavearworx.weebly.com/blog/witnessing-the-birth-of-progressive-metal-part-1-of-2
- Many tracks will easily digestible for Lexi from Rainbow. Its very cool to FINALLY see you enjoy Rainbow's music as I and many others predicted :D.
\m/
Solo like skating on ice
Ritchie Blackmore un monument j ai pas trouver mieux il est au-dessus du lot 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍👍👍
Catch the rainbow live on stage
The Joe Lynn Turner era is very good, too. I would recommend SPOTLIGHT KID.
There are two instrumentals that I recommend: the studio versions of WEISS HEIM and DIFFICULT TO CURE. However not without Lex.
Songs suitable for Lex are Stargazer, Weiss Heim, Difficult to Cure, Temple of the King, and Rainbow Eyes.
Loved your reaction, Nick, but how could you leave out "Street Of Dreams"? You would love it!!
👍🤘
1982 was a great year for music albums: Rainbow - Straight Between The Eyes, Rush - Signals and Toto - Toto IV just for starters.
Death Alley Driver is killer. Stone Cold is an absolute top power ballad.
"Metal Mastery" the teacher Ripping It Up! Nick I was fortunate enough to watch this lineup on the " Difficult To Cure " tour at George Washington University in D.C. it was Freaking Amazing! You said it brother, fast is something so many can attain. It is the soul that the greats emanate through their axes that separates the men from the boys. Watch SRV, Gary Moore and even Jimi and tell me that they are not channeling their souls through the guitars they are playing. Watch Gary Moore play "The Messiah Will Come Again" for proof of the previous statement.
Nick, you asked which vocalist we prefer...Dio all day, every day. If you are in the mood for a live Rainbow reaction you can do no better than their version of Mistreated from Munich in 1977. There is a video of this where you can see Blackmore switching between pickups all the time as he plays, which I would be interested in your take on. The tone he gets from his Stratocaster and his Marshall amps - unbelievable.
Take a listen to the album down to earth this song is with the world Graham unbelievable also want to Hilton shred stargazer you won’t be disappointed 🎸🎤🎵
Rainbow: 6 great Studio Albums with 3 different awesome Lead Singers. My singer ranking: 3. Joe Lynn Turner, 2. Graham Bonnet and 1. Dio. My personal favourite is Graham Bonnet, but i ranked Dio on 1 because the better Albums.
Great choice form Joe Lynn Turner´s era :-) But, in case of Rainbow you miss a lot if you don´t check out "Long Live Rock´n Roll", "Kill the King" , "Man on the Silver Mountain" and "Stargazer". And then there is one Rainbow singer who is unique, Graham Bonnet! No one, and I mean no one sings the way Graham Bonnett sings. Try the album "Down to Earth" and for example "Lost in Hollywood", "No Time to Lose" or "Lost in Hollywood". Pure gold! And as a bass player may I remind you who´s responsible for those magnificient bass lines, Mr. Roger Glover :-) He has also produced this album and many many more for different artists and bands.
Partly I liked Rainbow more than Deep Purple. IDK why. But it happened.
Just churning these out today en masse!
Du bist nur ein Reaktionsvideotier! 🤣
wir Deutsche lieben zusammengesetzte Wörter, aber Reaktionsvideotier must come out of a translating machine 🙂
More Rainbow Please! One of my favorite bands. Kill The King - Gotta do it. (You won't do it)
Hi Jeffrey i did like 2 other marathons on the channel and even a guitar solo 👍
It's summer time...get a flat top! 🤣
To appreciate Blackmore my friend you need to go to the live material, the studio albums never compare to the live version of the same tune … Blackmore is a monster live … Check out Live in Germany 1976 or Rainbow live On Stage … try each version of Catch the Rsinbow, you will understand my God invented the Strat ..
Hey, hey, now we really are at 41.8K! 8:10 EDT👍
How about desperate heart from bent out shape ?
💪🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
listen to machine head for fast Richie playing
U mean Stone Cold? :)
There are bands, who always had one singer, others had 2 and some even had 3. Each fan has his own ranking, but for me its Dio on 1, Joe Lynn Turner on 2 (liked him better with MSG) and Graham Bonnet never got me, there's something in his singing style, that I don't like too much. But not only because of Dio I liked the first 3 Rainbow albums best.... I didn't like the way Rainbow went too much afterwards ....
Here is the link czcams.com/video/ycqV9L7DuIs/video.html
Nick, wenn du Dinge änderst, solltest du dir vielleicht mal Blackmore's Night ansehen, um etwas zu finden, von dem ich denke, dass es dich überraschen wird.
Nick, Joe Lynn guested on Blackmore's Night remake of their song "Street of Dreams".
Ritchie is still god.
First part of the guitar solo it's a rip off from Bach Toccata in D minor!
Definitely too 80s for me. I prefer the 70s Ritchie Blackmore (especially with Deep Purple).
I don't like Manteca in my hair either.
Hahaha :D
ozzy osbourne, mr crowley, live with randy rhoads...

Okay I think you need to look inside yourself don't waste people's time
I love this whole album but my favorite song here is Eyes of Fire.
No one comes close to Blackmore
