  • Upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT) courses are increasingly popular with professional pilots, but what does that phrase mean? And how do you recover from an upset? In this episode of Sporty's Advanced Pilot Skills Series, Spencer Suderman takes us flying in a Super Decathlon to explain the basics of UPRT, including the essential checklist: look, unload, roll, recover.
    SERIES INTRO:
Welcome to Sporty's new Advanced Pilot Skills Series, hosted by Spencer Suderman. Spencer is an airshow pilot, flight instructor and two-time Guinness World Record breaker for most inverted flat spins… 98 turns from 24,000 feet!

In 1977 as a young Private Pilot I took an aerobatics course at Santa Paula airport in California . It was one of the smartest things I ever did. Recovery from unusual attitudes has to be pretty much instinctive and the worst thing is when pilots panic because they've never been there before.

This is the training that is on my bucket list my only regret will be puking in Spencer’s plane he seems like a nice guy. Not far from St. Augustine either.

Just don't eat anything except maybe some fruit juice 8 hours before going you may wretch but you won't vomit. Carry a barf bag just in case and there's no shame if you need it.

I flew in a biwing a couple weeks ago. The guy did a steep turn and gave me 3Gs. I was going completely dizzy. Even trying to push blood to my brain, I was super disoriented. The moment he pulled out, I went back to normal. I decided that I'm not mean to do aerobatics.

If you havent done G's before, they can hit you hard - I had an all day headache after my first aerobatics session, but after a while, your body adapts. Weight training helps and learning to do hand stands to get used to the blood to head.

This happens to most people and most people get over it pretty quickly. But some people never do.

Hope I never encounter unintended inverted flight. If I do I’m going to pull the power back and gently roll upright. Be easy to break the plane.

The most likely scenario for being flipped upside down is wake turbulence and you'll probably be low and slow.
