  • A simple piece of roots style piano in F, improvised during the lockdown. I've kept this sample low and slow, with a few riffs and motifs you might just recognise. For anyone who hasn't played piano for a while or wants to deviate from classical music, learning how to play simple blues is ideal- not to mention an excellent route into the basics of jazz and improvisation.
Names like Jimmy Yancey, Otis Spann and Jack Dupree mean nothing to 99% today, but blues pioneers like these helped form music as we know it, from rock to jazz and soul. Their form of popular music could not have been more real or more different to today's reality TV bollocks. They would sink or swim on their raw ability, and the styles they developed were rough, ready and direct to deal with the dodgy pianos and rowdy, noisy bars they played in.
In a funny way you can imagine them a bit like the gangster rappers of their day, making bold claims, trying to beat their rivals and see off the hecklers. In fact, much like today's hip hop artists, they were magpies who would borrow, steal and adapt riffs and "hooks" from other players to create their own authentic sound.
Anyway, I digress. It's still enjoyable music today- and for anyone who owns a piano or guitar but hasn't played in a while, roots style blues is a perfect way to get your mojo back.
