- For Ott’s Garage we got a project for you! This is a 3 part series on how to build a Crankbait. I started making baits when I was a teenager and have made them for 20 years at this point. I dont make tons of baits anymore, but this is where the beginning of each Rapala Ott’s Garage baits comes from. We wanted to give you a behind the scenes look at how it all comes together. Part 1 is all about making the body of your bait and getting the shape you want.

That’s really cool!! Awesome video
The classic is in knoxville!
From Otts garage to a Basses mouth and I can't wait to see the finish product. And should have a give away to this also would be neat.
You may be on to something!
Woo too cool man!!! It shows that you’ve done that many times. Can’t wait to see the bill install. When do you have time for this nowadays?? Glad you do thanks!!
awesome, cant wait to see the rest. by the end of the third series, will the bait be finished?
Great video. Where can I get bass pro carpet decals for my boat?
The router work looks a little sketchy. Can you do it with a pusher or some other tool so your fingers aren’t so close? Wanna keep all the digits for fishing.
I was saying the same thing. That's just scary.
You want to be fully into your work in that moment
Ott I would love to be a camera man for you one day , I literally love to fish everyday of the year ( I live on Watts Bar) I’ve graduated and can even have a whole other bass boat to record out of.
Ott, I love all your posts, plus being a Christian is a huge Blessing. What changes to my Helix 7 G3N would you recommend when fishing the Big O or other shallow water fisheries? I fish lots of canals where the water is 5' max. I appreciate any suggestions.
Very good video. If you want to see a master of the combo old school/modern tools, check out Marling baits. He is a genius.
Using that router that close scares the out of me.
Where do you get your bills and weights from
How thick do you normally make your crank baits?
Can someone please post a link to a video for safer way to do the routing of the edges.
Very cool when can we expect part 2 and 3 to this series’s?
2 is Friday and 3 is next Tuesday
@@OttDeFoeFishing awesome thanks, I’ve been looking for something to do with my free time and look forward to the new challenges. Thanks
Ott, I’m confused. You said you send your reels out for cleaning, because you don’t have the “patience” for it. Then I see you hand making crank baits. I think you may have a little more “patience” then you let on.😎
I know balsa is the go to wood but I've got some cedar left over from a project. Would cedar work?
Yes it does. It’s more dense so it takes less lead for the weight
Being a Carpenter of 35 years I would like to Correct you. You Never cut off the line! They WILL be Closer to Consistent if you leave the line when Cutting and Sand the line off. You could get an attachment for your drill press to make it a drum sander? It's Neat watching you create a bait.
Win the Bass Master Classic and get a deal with Rapala then maybe you could correct him.
@@anthonydaskus2350 Dumbest comment EVER! Carpenter of 35 years. ANY Carpenter with some time under his belt will explain cut up to the line and sand the line to get "Consistent" results. It's NOT a Secret? When it comes to Fishing He's the Master (Wasn't giving him fishing advice). When it comes to "Carpentry", I'm a Master. It's his "Choice" to take my "TIP" or Not? Go watch a few Carpentry channels and get back to me.
Can I order some handmades?
You should build a jig to hold the bait when routing it.
I’ve racked my brain trying to figure out how. 🤷🏻♂️
@@OttDeFoeFishing Use a part of the scrap that is the shape of the part, put a lip on top that will hold the part down while routing.
I was thinking you could make 2 jigs . One for the bottom of the bait and one for the top. Take a board about the thickness of the bait. Draw the bottom half of the bait on the edge of the board . Then cut it out . Place your bait in the opening then route. Then repeat for the top half. I’ve never tried it . But I think it would work.
How do I donate $25 for a raw cut out to help me on my way?
Dude. Great video, but make a jig for that router table. You are going to need those fingers to fish those baits. Puttting on goggles and ear plugs are great but not if you are going to show people how to lose half their hand to a router bit. Please don’t try this like this at home folks. From experience, I have been building lures for decades now. That thing will jerk a bait right out of your hands and your hands right into the bit. A stick and some double sided tape is enough to keep you away from the emergency room. Be smart and be safe.
That is b.a
Wish you would get with Andy Montgomery and re-create the old Carolina kill'r crankbait.
As someone who does woodworking please find a better way to round the edges. Your fingers are way too close to that router bit. One false move or if that wood catches wrong it could easily take a chunk out of your fingers or hand.
I wish I knew one!
@@OttDeFoeFishing Hey I just saw this now and thought of your video here. This might save you from injury. czcams.com/video/8FJQZOJd360/video.html
If you're interested in this process, check out marlingbaits on CZcams. Great guy, super skilled and creative. I've been making custom baits for a couple year's now, all inspired by marlingbaits.
Just did. That is cool stuff
