  • Snatcher is a cyberpunk-themed adventure game written and directed by Hideo Kojima. It was developed and published by Konami. Originally released in Japan for the NEC PC-8801 and MSX2 in 1988, it was remade for the PC-Engine in 1992 and ported to the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1996. It was released for the Sega CD in North America and its counterpart, the Mega CD in Europe, in 1994, in what is the game's first and only official English version. Snatcher has gained a small cult following due to its mature storytelling, adult themes and (in later versions) voice acting. It was heavily influenced by various sci-fi and noir films, most notably Blade Runner (main character and city views), The Terminator (the snatchers) and Dune (random, freemen)

One thing i love about Snatcher is like all Hideo Kojima games (apart from zone of the enders maybe) is he always tries to use the in game graphics capabilities for all the cutscenes, rather than prerendered video, and pushes those systems to their limit. Snatcher could very well be considered the pinnacle of Sega CD graphics.

It still impresses me more than any modern HD games that try so hard to come off as movies. They really, really utilized the Sega CD hardware incredibly well for this port. If anyone ever needed a reason to own a Sega CD, THIS IS IT. I hope if Kojima ever revisits Snatcher for a new installment, he stays true to the gameplay structure. It's part of it's charm.

This was my first Kojima game. I remember being blown away by the stylish intro, the music, and the voice acting - which was so much better than you would hear in most games (pc or console) or dubbed anime at the time. I remember thinking the Working Designs games had great voice acting at the time and realizing many years later that it mostly doesn't hold up. I think the acting here holds up... even if it isn't nearly as special as it was in 1994.

I've always wanted to play this game for a long long time but never had the CD player for the Sega CD wow those are the days. Kojima is a mad genius.

I see. The influences this game has from various anime films and Hollywood blockbusters is unmistakable.

Here's the story; the game is openly very heavily inspired by Blade Runner, but also The Terminator and lots of other movies. One would think this would make a cheap knock-off, but this game is considered one of the 90's forgotten masterpieces. The creator is called Hideo Kojima, the man behind the Metal Gear series.

That's because they're all based off of BladeRunner. So many great 80's and early 90's anime/manga/videogames got their look from it. A classic.

I don't know how or why, but games made before this current generation of consoles managed to draw me into their worlds effortlessly. If we can crack the code on how these games did it we may be able to save the world from eternal Call of Duty darkness. That's not say Call of Duty is bad, but it isn't what we need as a creative species.
    Kojima for President, btw.

I had been looking for this game for a long time, and managed to acquire a JVC xEye and a copy of the Sega CD game probably 4 years back. This game was a lot of fun.

I borrowed this game and a Sega CD off a friend in high school... right around the time the N64 and Playstation came out. I was curious about the game because I heard great things about it in gaming mags... I figured I'd try it out for a day or two then go back to the N64 because 3D games were "cooler". I ended up keeping my friends Sega CD for like 3 weeks playing it.. you cannot put the game down once you start.

Thank you for reuploading this. I originally uploaded this but it was removed along with all of the other 199 of my videos when my original account was deleted. All because I used 3 seconds of Simpsons footage.

Yeah, but keep this in mind, my friend. This came out in 1994. 1994! That like 2 years before the horrible Resident Evil vocies were recorded. I say this is a freaking AWESOME voice-over for it's time.
