Zoologist Reviews Paleozoic Archetype from Yu-Gi-Oh!

- I review the paleozoic archetype from Yu-Gi-Oh! mostly on how accurate their artwork design is. I also talk about their effect, but not gonna overthink it. If you are wondering whether Paleozoic would receive further support, or maybe just want to make your own custom card, then I'll tell you other animals that would fit as the basis.

Note on Pikaia:
After further reading, i found out that it's named after the Pika Peak in Alberta, Canada.
The Pika Peak itself is named after Pika the animal.
You forget to explain about Paleozoic Rollback
He also forgot Paleozoic Waboku and Paleozoic Rise to full Height
Paleozoic burst can’t be left behind
Paleozoic Soldier Dragons are quite good too
He didn't mention my Destructive Paleozoic Karma Cannon
No mention of Paleozoic Laundry Dragonmaid? Smdh
Yugituber: "yeah, these bacteria..."
Anomalocaris: I am gonna practice unconsensual mitosis with your body ✂️
Soup rice mitosis
I Hope Josh sees This vid
The trilobite community will remember this
In case you were wondering: in modern variants of Paleozoics the best main deck Paleozoic traps are actually Marella and Leanchoilia because they can respectively send and recycle "Transaction Rollback" to your graveyard. Transaction Rollback is a trap that you can banish from your graveyard in order to activate the effect of any other trap card in your graveyard (circumventing it's cost), which is absurdly powerful. Olenoides, Dinomischus and Canadia are also played because for one their effects decent, but their main purpose is being extra bodies you can summon from grave to facilitate getting your XYZ Paleos asap. Eldonia, Halucigenia and Pikaia see no play since their effects are awful.
I always feel bad for Pikaia because it used to be really good but modern Yugioh just didn't give it a chance.
It's just a bit too slow, a bit too restrictive, a bit too nonimpactful.
that farfa shade was insane lol.
Sounds very deserved to me.
Farfa brings that onto himself if we're being honest. Like bro sees a woman in a meme and thinks it's automatically coomerposting . Are we really surprised he doesn't know what a Paleozoic monster is based on? Lmao
@@justsomeguy727 the funny thing is
He *STILL* does that
And then proceeds to breakdown every single time someone makes anything even tangentially related to the obliteration of infant dinosaurs via natural selection (or smth)
Wait what happened? I only left the game for 2 years...
@@rifarira9160 he don't realise that paleos are supposed to be paleozoic era lifeforms
Not bacteria
marrella: "i bury gun"
leanchoilia: "oh shit the gun escaped"
It was so fun and entertaining watching someone who knows both ends (zoology and yugioh) analyze these cards. Great video!!
Id like to imagine Anamolocaris excavating a card is the equivalent of it going on a hunt, with a successful one letting you add its prey to your hand
Paleozoic Olenoides S/T removal effect is a callback to another card called Deep Sweeper.
Never thought about that before
Thanks for telling me
These are the kind of yugioh archetypes that I think are the coolest, ones that are based in some kind of reality that you would be quizzed on for pub trivia or something
Like, nowadays if I see a picture of one of these prehistoric creatures, I usually can remember what its name is just based in the equivalent yugioh card lol
Just found this channel and not even 1 min "have you read misc?" bruh im rolling rn, are you actually a yugioh player? W channel
I am indeed a yugioh player, or maybe i should say i "was".
I played real yugioh till branded format. Nowadays i just watch others play basically.
great video, but you forgot to mention the most recently discovered fossil of a 25 meter-long Mech
I can't wait for someone to write a university dissertation on the Paleozoic era and reference this archetype
This is the YGO content I've been craving. Ty.
I was tellimg a friend about this Archetype yesterday and now it pops up in my recommendations. For once I'm glad my phone's listening in on me, lol.
Pokemon, Digimon, Monster Hunter, Godzilla, AND yugioh? Mans has a lot of the same interests as me yet he's a zoologist making interesting CZcams vids on the side while I've barely done much with my life. Thanks for giving me the push I need to finish writing my book, pick up a few languages again and maybe, finally properly pick up coding on the side
I don't know who you are but i don't think "I've barely done much with my life" is a fair statement.
You've done everything you did in your life. We just walk on a different path, that's all.
Everything is an experience and everything has an impact. Somehow, someway
Keep living and enjoy your life
Don't let your capital gains define how much you've done with your life. While yes it can impact what you do with your life. If you've been happy and haven't hurt anyone with your happiness then you've done a lot with your life already. You got this rando person.
Like many I sometimes think of custom cards for my favorite decks, which had me going down the Paleozoic rabbit hole for research purposes. I found it really interesting to discover all those species, even though the amount of them made it really hard to decide on a handful of them as most of them are pretty interesting.
We need paleo support and we also, more desperately need more content like this!
These are some of my favourite cards in Yugioh! Such a fun deck to play and such cool art!
Funniest part about this is the decks best friend is a big derpy toad
stumbling upon a fascinating zoology channel that also delves into fiction is always a treat! manyala bang
Yooooooo idk what this channel is but this was literally my dream video!!!
Now I’m really hoping they make another halluciginia with the correct shape!!!
Bro, its such a rare occassion when real zoologist look into games or anime stuff such as yugioh. Keren bro, lanjutin
Despite not coming from a yugioh channel, this video feels like such a love letter to the yugioh community! Loved this video alot!
Thank you so much for making this video! I learned so much and absolutely loved it!
I would love to see you or a historian do a video on the Infernoid archtype and go over the monsters, what they are based off and what they think of the designs. As far as I know the Infernoids were based off of mythological creatures.
I’ve been waiting for a video like this for years.
Never knew i wanted this video until now
Fantastic vid, finally a YugiTube video with some actual brain to it.
Instant sub!

Hey don’t you dare talk about my Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather Cubed that way.
I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT MAKING CUSTOM PALEO LEGACY SUPPORT!!! Thank you I'm gonna be referencing this a lot!
I have no idea why but the POV leanchoilia about to eat you made me laugh.
Very interesting video! :)
Near the end of the video I was wondering if there were more animals that fit the Paleozoic theme, and right after you provided a bunch.
Couldn't ask for a better analysis
Yeah and instead of halving ATK and DEF it doubles it as a callback to the original card/way people thought it was
Broo, loved the video. I wasnt honestly expecting someone to make this exact topic video but ofc I thought several times about wishing such thing to watch.
It was very entertaining and also ofc, looking forward on Konami making new support with some other specimens.
Great video and thanks😁 (ofc Im a Paleo player lol)
Miscellaneosaurus looks like something coming out of the fossil wars
CZcams recommended me this video and the algorithm wasnt wrong this time. I really enjoyed this video as paleozoic is one of my pet decks and i also enjoy paleontology
I asked my grandfather in British Columbia. Leanchoil is apparently pronounced "Leen-Coy-el"
Excellent video on paleos, have you considered doing something like this for Ghoti? I think they lean a bit more towards the "fantasy" side but I'm sure there's things you can talk about their real life inspirations.
Pikmin could be an interesting franchise to cover, as almost all of the creatures have scientific names and classifications
I've received several comments about pikmin before and i'm honestly quite intrigued since then.
The thing is, i literally never played pikmin before and i simply don't like talking about something when i basically knows nothing about them and just look at them on the surface for a video.
I'm planning to try playing the game though. Do you have any recommendation on which game to play mr. all-around helper? (don't cut my body into pieces though)
@@OutofPlaceZoologist Pikmin 4 has the most expansive roster of creatures overall, if you just want to play 1 game, and it has most of the ones from previous games.
I'd say either pikmin 1 or 4 are the best ones to start with.
1 still holds up as a great standalone game, but it's the shortest one. I think it delivers being "the first pikmin experience", having fun creatures and puzzles.
4 has more stuff to do in general and is easier, also with a lot of neat quality of life stuff. It's a lot longer but that means it has a lot more creatures.
talk about instant payout as a new sub, thanks for looking into our silly pieces of paper friend!
I really loved the Canadia joke.
I giggled with the way he said "or animals with jobs"
Love that Pikaia says Paleozoic card, and not trap. Leaves space open for cool cards. Maybe in the far off future we’ll have new paleo monsters that turn the deck into a boring midrange deck like Traptrix or Altergeist 😅 I’d want the monsters to be like Adamancipator, be references to the scientists who worked on the shale to discover these creatures
Very cool and entertaining video to watch
great stuff, i need more
Can you do more Yugioh Archtype stuff like this its super interesting i knew alittle about the Palezoic irl stuff but this was so cool
This is one of my favorite archetypes for my one of my favorite dumb time periods
I recommend you to check all the not dinosaurs monster in Fossil fighters, they take an interesting shot at how ancient creatures will look taking part of where they where found.
And so i thought i heard familiar accent i was right wkwk, nice video bro
Please excuse my lack of of proper terminology, but I've always loved fossils since I was little. My dad got be a bunch of plaster prints that still hang on my walls.
As such, this video made feel really happy, thank you! ❤
If paleos got support, what fauna do you think designers should take inspiration from? Eg: Wiwaxia has a pretty distinct look
Very cool video👍
this video was awesome, really cool learning about the Paleozoics
if i were to add a Paleozoic card, it would be a support card, like a continuous trap that helps speed them up a bit, call it "cambrian explosion" or something
also i can only hope you plan on doinga Transendrakes video in the future, or an Evol one
I was actually considering evol
Then i thought "who would care about evol in this day and age, it's not even popular back then"
Then i read this comment and thought "wow someone actually care about evol"
Then i look at your username and i was like "oh, that's a rare specimen"
@@OutofPlaceZoologist are Evols under loved?
here i thought people liked them due to being good dinosaur support and being very negate focused
@@evodolka Can't say for sure about that but i think majority of yugioh player nowadays don't even know evols other than dolkka and laggia
@@OutofPlaceZoologist yeah that sounds about right, still though if you make a dinosaur deck those 2 are definitely being used
Shame about Solda always getting ditched though
Regarding Anomalocaris, the reason we don't see the mouthparts is simply cause it is looking down with us in its sights, as such we can't see the actual mouth from that angle.
I wasn’t going to watch but the video deserves a view and comment to boost its plave in the algorithm.
Omg this is an amazing cross-over that I never expected wtf I love you king (no homo)
i don't mind this kind of video, this is really nice, love it
also if you going to make video like this about game, i recommend arknights, which have good material to talk about animal since their character are based on animal and even they classify the character race based on animal group, there's even someone identifying the species of every character
Fun fact: i actually played arknights since release and i love how they put the animal inspiration on the background of their E2 art (some of them at least)
@@OutofPlaceZoologist woah nice to see a doctor
Video summarized in three words: “Too many spikes.”
We need to get Josh to react to this
Someone pitch this video to Joshua Schmidt
19:34
This is something I really didn't need to know
Now he looks goofy with those eyes and I can't unsee them
Well, it was about that time I noticed that this girl scout was about 8 stories tall, and a crustacean from the Paleozoic Era!
(I also prefer Burgesstoma)
8:17
I m guessing those red things are supposed to be what they use to feed. Kinda like some kind of vacuum
I can't remember what I first saw you cover, maybe Ark or Monster Hunter, but I definitely didn't expect you to dive into YuGiOh! (no pun intended)
I absolutely adore Paleos, in both visual design and card design. They're the reason I researched the Paleozoic time period because of how strange and otherworldly they seemed. Still a fan favorite deck that is entirely unique in it's playstyle, which is hard to come by since the game has been out for 25+ years lol
Yeah my interest are all over the place
The trisaratops with fossil wings I think is a reference to the bone wars
"have you read misc"
God damn it not even in the cool Paleozoic video can I escape my inability to read misc I'm so cooked.
13:12 rumbling rumbling rumbling i coming for you
19:00 I like how the card has a fake face in the middle with its realbulbish eye at the side with two small blue dots as fake eye
As a bio major I really enjoy more "scientific" type decks.Paleozoics, Keawlers, Predaplants. They are some of my favorite for how they incorporate science into the deck structure.
I'm so hoping for a wiwaxia card
gotta get it out every wiwaxia wednesday
where are the fossils of Laundry Dragonmaid?
Whats going on with Herpetogaster
POP da baby!!!
12:48 the reason why canadia book their opponent, is because it is a reference to the famous catchphrase of the canadian streamer felix "xQc" lengyel during his famous gambling stream "BOOK, BOOK, BOOK"
Insert skull emoji here
12:59"SASAGEYO,SASAGEYO,SHINZO SASAGEYO"
"hated" !? Paleozoic is grandfather in as one of the most beloved decks of all time
0:30 I'm pretty sure I've seen its cousins in british museums before.
The better pocketmon..yu-gi-oh(mon)
Do the Ghoti Archetype!
Common Josh W
can someone send this to joshua?
Leahchoil should sound like "lan-chole" with the "ch" sounding like in "loch", I think.
Huh interesting Pikaia name would make more sense with polish word Pika as it means Pike
15:06
100% of brazilian viewers laughed in this moment
So if I wish for new paleozoic support I just gotta go and find a new critter irl? on my way
The fucking Cambrian
No way bro, Haug et. al thats my prof., I just clicked for yugioh
If hallucigenia was more playable i would be screaming for a more accurate alternative art
I love Paleozoic on duel links 🙂↕️
Bruh, you didnt give me time to rest my eyes and hydrate. :(
My IRL friend actually jokes about this before
Didn't expect someone to make this comment on my video lol
Theres aliens in my oceans
Asking why this specific card in the archetype does this specific thing is usually futile xD
You forgot to talk about the Paleozoic Rollback, Palaeozoic Karma Cannon and Paleozoic Elemental Burst.
Pikaia is named after the hill it was found. Nothing to do with the animal of the same name.
Thanks
I was confused about this because Pikaia was described in 1911 but the Pika Peak wikipedia article stated that it was named in 1928, so i thought "that couldn't be it".
I decided to go with the etymology given by the Royal Ontario Museum that stated it was named after pika the animal.
Added context in the pinned comment
@@OutofPlaceZoologist I guess what happened is the mountain had been given that name before, but the name was only made official in 1928.
To quote the discoverer himself: "Generic name derived from Pika, name of a mountain peak northwest of Laggan, Alberta, Canada." (Charles D. Walcott:
Middle Cambrian Annelids; Lord Baltimore Press 1911). The book is available at Wikisource.

It was actually thought to be a really big cambroraster
