- www.ultralightflyer.com - The allure of a round engine is an oft-expressed notion by many a pilot and aircraft aficionado. The heyday of the radial engine is firmly in the past, yet the mystique has never waned. Verner Motor has developed a modern incarnation of these classics that delivers the advantages of the radial configuration. For those who seek a true radial engine for a light aircraft, a Verner engine offers a compelling value.
ScaleBirds have always been developed with the idea of round engines in mind. With the Scarlett 7 and 5 series engines, we have found an ideal round engine solution for our proposed lite and sport fighter lines. In order to make these engines more accessible in the future, we have agreed to act as dealers in the USA for Verner Motor. While this should lead to ScaleBirds that can come complete with comprehensive firewall forward installation packages with these unique engines from the Czech Republic, it also means that anyone who wishes to use a Verner on their own project may find ScaleBirds a good source of information, products, and support.
The Verner Scarlett 3VW is a direct answer to the problem of a light, powerful 4-stroke for real ultralight aircraft. As a direct-drive radial using VW cylinders, this engine comes in at almost the same weight as the most powerful 1/2 VW conversions, yet generates torque closer to a full VW. No longer do you have to carry the extra case weight and deal with the design limitations of a chopped motor: the Scarlett is designed from the ground up to be small and powerful, while still delivering all the satisfaction and sound of the real radial it is.
The Scarlett VW uses a Walbro diaphragm type carburetor, distributing to all 3 cylinders and will take both auto & aviation fuels. The electric starter is optional, and easily installed or removed. As with all Scarlett engines, the oil is a dry-sump system with return from the lower cylinders and the bottom of the case, and ignition is controlled by computer and fired by individual ignition coils.
The Verner Scarlett 5Si is a modern radial that brings real power in a minimal package at a great price. With specs and performance that put it right next to other 80HP engines, the Scarlett 5Si is still lighter than the other direct drive options and without the cost and complexity of the higher revving redrive engines of similar output. Verner makes this engine using the same cylinders and heads and systems as their already successful 7 cylinder engines, but reducing the weight and cost while keeping the power in a useful range. This motor would be a great fit for many aircraft that are out there today, and for those yet to come.
The Scarlett 5Si uses a throttle-body fuel injector with 2 main ports and 1 backup, distributing fual-air to all 5 cylinders. The engine will happily take both auto & aviation fuels. The electric starter is mounted direct to the back of the case. As with all Scarlett engines, the oil is a dry-sump system with return from the lower cylinders and the bottom of the case, and ignition is controlled by computer and fired by individual ignition coils.
The Verner Scarlett 7Si delivers the most power in the Scarlett series, yet retains the compact size of its siblings. With over 130 HP at your disposal, the 7Si starts to really mean business. Whether a Great War replica fighter, a classic 2-seat biplane, or perhaps one of our own ScaleBirds someday, the 7 cylinders and direct drive are a great combination that deliver the right look, the right sound, and all the performance.

That radial sounded GREAT!
These things look old and modern at the same time. I like it.
It is all about the look and sound of a radial!!!
One of these would be awesome on an aerdrome bleriot.
Love the sound!
G'day,
The Sound of ROUND....; they call it !
;-p
Ciao !
Some great new engines like D-motor (liquid cooled side valve boxer mogas) and these Verner radials (mogas). A slow plane like Carbon Cub might be really good with 7 cyl. Verner... a true "traditional modern" bushplane. D-motor LF39 might be better for a "fast" plane like Pipistrel Virus SW.
One of the great engines companies of the world. Just what you need for an ultralight aircraft.
Espectacular muy bien 😃👍
That biplane took off in less than 100’ after full throttle (visual estimation). That is pretty impressive.
We need a 4 row, constant speed and turbonormalized variant.
talk about that throaty roar some more. The Three cyl is particularly fascinating .
What is this biplane shown in the video? It looks like the same airframe in two paint schemes. These motors look promising.
But does it have a throaty roar?
What a sound !
Watch the WHOLE video.
Sweet, would be great alternative to having to go opposed engine designs such as Rotax.
Im' not understand if you need a ultra classic 4 cylinder boxer, it's exits LOTS of such engines, but radials such size are unique...
Just enlarge the pitch, same size prop then , right ?
I wonder if they'd work with a motor glider platform
man i want one, but the price... building a reliable budget plane is difficult when it comes to the engine. its the most important part...
I wonder if they have set up factory authorized service in the states or you will have to ship it all the way back to Europe. This would seem to be the biggest drawback to the Rotec engines service.
I wonder if they could be used in smaller scale replicas of some world war two fighters? or even smaller versions of the world war two bombers? Could the six cylinder ones be stacked to give more power to a world war two bomber replica or fighter replica? (just thinking out loud).
Thomas Lee Mullins Radials use odd numbers of cylinders per row.
VERY GOOD ENGINE, BRASIL OK.
how much is the 7 cylender
Nobody said anything about these engines prices, I am interested in that 3 cylinder one just in case anyone knows how much it is?
what model is the two seat biplane in this video?
Its one of my Customer, the plane is an Kiebitz you can buy only the plans by the german Michael Platzer. I think in europ fly over 300 of these biplanes
Dan, why don't you seldom ask the price?
Would be nice on my sky scout
Quanto custa o motor Verner de três cilindros e qual seu peso.?
what is fuel burn on the 3vw?
mogas
Based on 40 HP, I would assume perhaps 2 to 2.2 gallons per hour.
Looks more modern than the Rotec.
I like the the vintage look of a Rotec but I also need at least the build quality of a $150 Walmart lawn mower... which the Rotec doesn't have. Hopefully these are better.
Nice
I am going to assume that odd-number-cylinder-radial engines are an engine balance issue. So, how much for which ? And why did VW 4 cylinder always do so well...or Beemer bike engines?
Radial engines have odd numbers of cylinders because of the four stroke otto cycle. On say a 9 cylinder engine, you fire 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 2, 4, 6, 8 and every cylinder can do a four stroke cycle of intake, compression, power, exhaust. Multi row radials with even numbers of cylinders work because each row has an odd number of cylinders.
There are very rare radials with even numbers of cylinders that are two stroke designs, I recall one experimental 8 cylinder diesel radial. It wasn't put into mass production because the power to weight ratio was very poor, it was extremely heavy and had a very low power output. The one thing it had going is that it was very efficient, but a low power heavy diesel engine doesn't work well in aircraft.
is this RADIAL ENGINE available in PHILIPPINES?please reply LIGHT SPORT AND ULTRALIGHT FLYER
These engines originate in Europe - and can be shipped anywhere in the world, another radial engine to look at is the Rotec Radial.

Sounds good, but not like a -985 at 35” and 2300rpm..... hard to win that contest.....
I like the sound of those. they sound Harley.
What is that 2 place plane called?
I could listen to these engines all day. Wife don't understand it. Guess it's a man thing.
Anyone know if there's a Harley Davidson engine, powered airplane out there?
There's such a big line of engines to choose from... Why not use them?
You can bet these radials aren't so cheap. Yet if you wanted an engine that has similar performance and sound, it only seems natural that a Harley engine would get someone's attention. They even make them with dual ignition as well!
Motorcycle engines are so varied, powered, reliable, economical... What's the down side?
www.lightsportaircraftpilot.com/EAA_sun_n_fun_2005/21.html gives some information, there are several companies offering Harley Engine conversions for aircraft.
Can this be used in a kitfox?
There is no reason that it couldn't, that I am aware of. Kitfox is already fitted with other Radial engines, of the same weight and power.
Would not trust plug coils they have a very bad reputation on air cooled engines (including my own).
george waite i have coil packs on my VW n haven’t had any issues in 3 years
Dual Ignition?
A good enough idea that it should be made do-able....unless you're deeply into dead-sticks, lol.
Very cool motor. I have now seen way to many vids with your mic not working.........fix the damn the damn already! What the he'll is going on the editor keeps letting this things get by? Great video but seriously WHAT is going on?
Microphones ARE working correctly - problem is AT YOUR end.

Sounds ok to me
I can barely hear the guy talking in the red shirt and white shirt
what is the name and contact of this company please
www.vernermotor.com/ the manufacturer
scalebirds.com/about-1/ the US dealer/importer being interviewed
If you want to get rich producing these engines, adapt them to fit motorcycles!
It's already been done with a BIG one. Look em up
