- This week we pick our greatest Stormers team to ever play in Super Rugby. It was a tough one to call (specifically choosing between Habana and Kolbe on the wing...), but we feel this team could have beaten anyone on their day.

It really is painful being a Stormers Supporter. They have the best players most years, but there is always something that stops them from dominating.
So true, I think the last time I really enjoyed our local rugby was probably during Super 14
Ja, in every case they have something that holds them back. In each tournament, the Stormers have shown Super Rugby that they are formidable but for some odd reason, have never managed to nab a Super Rugby title. Only South African team to do so was the Bulls. A real pity. I can never fully enjoy supporting the Stormers although I always have supported them.

@@Skyscraper2015 Honestly I think springbok selection has a lot to do with it. They play WP brand rugby, which used to be flair and fast wingers, and then get drafted into a bok squad thats all bash and playing off the ruck. But now a days, i'm not even sure.

Use to love watching Pieter Rossouw stride out like a Flyibg Gazelle. Though we had Jonah's power, Rossouw was majestic to watch. Beautiful in full flight 🙌
I can't argue with the team too much because we have been blessed with amazing players. So I believe the "B" Team will give them a proper run! I would do anything to have been able to see this contest!

Willemse at 10? No ways, I'd say rather Demetri Catrakilis or Peter Grant. Some honorable mentions/bench should be Pieter Rossouw, Danie Gerber, Cobus Visagie, Joe Pietersen
Flyhalf was tricky and open to opinion. I think highly of Willemse. Grant was good, but not spectacular, although he would have worked in that backline. Gerber never played Super Rugby

Met Shalk Burger a few weeks back, the kid in me lit up. This video made me feel that same way.

Great video but as a Stormer eish "moelike tye" cant believe we could not win a super rugby title. Think we won the first 3 conference cups but that was it, I would change my 10 but it is a diff video to make over 25 years. Maybe make a team for every 10 years. But great video thanks for the Highlights. BOB Skinstad you legened :)
When Marias Joubert, De wet Barry , Pieter Russoux and Gio Aplon can't make your backline you know you're spoilt for choice beyond most teams
How Stormers never managed a Super Rugby title is baffling. Just look at this Superb XV and some other good Springboks they had include Mbonambi, Bekker, Kolisi, Krige, Watson, Van Niekerk, Conradie, Januarie, Rossouw, Habana, Barry, Joubert and Aplon.
Well I don't know how they imploded in 1999 and the "men in black" kit coz I was still young.
But the Allister Coetzee era I was there from start to finish.
They never ever had a world class fly half or any flyhalf that could have game management in the big games... They also never invested in a scrum half of Joost or Fourie Du Preez caliber.
But conradie and Januarie were good enough, so they needed a world class flyhalf.
They even tried signing the BMT choker Elton, they had the most mediocre 10 in Peter Grant ever, then there was this tall colored kid Coleman, who looked more like a centre than a 10.
Had Stormers gotten Andre Pretorius in his prime or even signed a NZ or brought in Fredrick Michalak or even the crazy English boy, Cipriani things could've been very very different.
Blame that on Coetzee
100% agree. I think Conradie and Januarie were brilliant but it was at 10 we were never strong.
I think Willemse stint at 10 pre injury was the best we had. And now Libbok seems to be the 10 for the job.
After his knee injury he changed his entire play and everything was about strength exactly like what happened to Frans Steyn. Started at 10 got a knee injury and bulked up and became centres
Thanks! This was great to watch. I love Kolbe, but how many tries did Pieter Rossouw score for the Stormers? Legend. I agree with some of the other viewers: Peter Grant at 10, Bongi at 2. I totally agree with your centre pairing (Jean and Jaque) and would consider them as the best Springbok pairing in the last 20 years. But Barry and Joubert as centres were special too. I enjoyed watching Joe Pietersen and Gio Aplon playing 15.
I kinda felt Lukhanyo Am and Damian De Allende are a formidable centre pairing as well.

The Stormers had some great loose forwards, I am a fan of Francois Louw and then there also were Kolisi and Krige (both Springbok Captains no less) and none of them made this list.
It was very difficult to leave out those loosies, all legends in their own right

I find it interesting how future Springboks as youngsters played alongside the experienced Springboks and got their call up.
Kolisi played with Burger and Vermeulen. We really are a Springbok factory.
Very tough decision, but agree with most of the line-up, although I would never separate 15. Montgomery, 14. Paulse & 11. Rossouw. That back three defined the Stormers creativity from the mid '90s to early 2000's. Marius Joubert, De Wet Bary, Robbie Fleck, Gio Aplon & Corne Krige are unlucky to miss out.
All legends, it was a tough choice indeed
I agree, as good as Kolbe is *Peter Rossouw was better*
not a bad line up.. but anyway it's just a matter of opinion..

3. Cobus Visagie (Malherbe can scrum, but Cobus was bad news for his opponents)

8. bob Skinstad (Thor is a legend, but Bobby was a very special talent)
9. Bolla Conradie (my view is that he was unfairly seen as quarter player, but he was a very good 9)
10. Peter Grant (very reliable boot and game manager, sadly had world class 10s ahead of him in the boks)
11. Pieter Rossouw (Kolbe is elusive, but slaptjips was just awesome too)

13. Rob Fleck (Jaque Fourie is a bok legend, but Fleck is a Province/stomers legend... if that makes sense?)

16. Deon Fourie (very underrated... very very underrated, very sad he did not get a springbok cap)

Aplon, Joe Pietersen, DdA, De Wet Barry, Marius Joubert, Peter Grant, Januarie, Krige, Louw, Kolisi, Watson, Visagie, Eddie Andrews, Liebenberg are all contenders for this selection. What a TEAM it is!!!

The Bulls from the year 2007 until 2010 were by far the greatest in their era won three super titles and a double in 2009 currie cup included and beat the stormers in 2010 super final stormers somehow could not deliver in big games with their great names
That 2010 season when we whitewashed all the Kiwi teams was special.

Wow what a team. I would have Peter Grant over Willemse and maybe Robbie Fleck at 13 (Foure was great, but didn't play that long for the stormers). Other players worth a mention: Pieter Rossouw, Kolisi, Habana, Becker, Frans Low, Gio Aplon, hell even

I'd pick Braam at 10... But therein lies the answer to why the Stormers have not won the title... The lack of solid world class (consistent) 9 & 10 combination. Closest we got: We lost in 2010 final playing against the bulls, led by Du Preez and Morne Steyn.
Fair comment, I just never rated Braam that much. Accurate kicker, but couldn't really get his backline away. Wouldn't fit into this backline for me

Kolbe ahead of Rassouw or Habana is a controversial call. But any of those would be great.
It was a tough one to be honest... Slapchips probably deserves to be there as does Habana, although I think Habana played his best rugby at the Bulls, so I included him in that team

Frans Lou has to be in there, I don't care where. Sorry but Schalk Burger might have to go to the bench, I'll never forget that jet black hair plastered to his scalp with sweat after stealing yet another ball from a Crusaders or Bulls ruck, for a good 3-4 years he was the best fletcher in the world, even before getting picked for the Springboks.
I also have a soft spot for Luke Watson coz in 2008 he was unplayable
