    Man, oh, man! It reminds me my youthness up there at the highlands of Spain, trying furiously to start my lovin' Barreiros Diesel at -11ºC. Shortly after I bought that car, all the chicken, ducks, partridges an' usually feathered living beings migrated to the South or simply blew a coronay valve and collapsed.

    I had a few cold starts like that. I decided its better to let it sit until the weather is warmer than to risk damage. Those Series 60s dont like starting in the cold and that 15 W 40 is like butter when its cold out. My Webasto quit but I discovered my block heater works just fine.

    I would take a wire and a piece of cloth, make a torch, wet it with diesel oil, remove the air filter, which is already open and conveniently located, put a burning torch in there and start this diesel the first time and without blue smoke . One such to do problematic, but with so many people-elementary .

    This also can happen with a semi. If it has a engine heater, just plug it in a outlet and there should be very little problem, even if it could be cold up to minus 15. I never had a semi without a engine heater to plug in a outlet.

    How long does the Prevost usually take to start in REALLY COLD weather if it hasn't been started for several days? What's it like for pulling up really steep hills when the engine is really cold?

    • @breakingpointvideos1995
      @breakingpointvideos1995 Před 4 lety +3

      Diesels typically won't start in sub zero degree weather without either a block heater, ether (starter fluid) or a battery charger to assist. Block heater is best. Once started, the thermostat opens up and the engine is warm by time you drive a short distance and will be warm enough for a hill.

      Most large diesels don't have GP's. Some medium duty's will have grid heaters in the intake but heavy duty Don't have any. There is so much compression and the can generate heat quickly enough that they don't need it. Engines like the series 60 and dd13 15 and 16 don't have any starting aids.

    That was very painful to watch/hear.
    Its o.k., to give it a little bit of throttle to allow it to fire on all cylinders, then let it return to idle after it begins to run smoothly.
    Letting it struggle to run on only three cylinders, is a bit like child abuse.

The engine you might be referring to was the Detroit Diesel 6-71 a naturally aspirated 2 stroke began production in 1936 and was phased out of production for automotive applications in the early 1990’s.

      @@jetstream454 I have to say from recent direct experience that while today's German pedigree rental cars go much faster on the Autobahn with minimal signs of restriction compared to a Nissan effort, my ancient indirect injection Mercedes 300D with the said long cranking cold start advice gathers speed on the road only reluctantly, but has vast reserves of handling allowing full use of momentum for almost unrestricted progress on winding and rough roads. Conversely my ancient Unimog with direct injection starts instantly even in sub zero conditions (never had to use the ether pilot start aid) and then idles with no roughness or stumbling , which is at complete variance with Powerstrokes and other non German attempts at Diesel propulsion. I'll excuse linguistic lapses in the manuals and revell in the hardware!
