  • Why is it that none of the Aardman Dreamworks team ups seemed to do well at all? Is there something that i'm missing here?
    Today we decided to dig a little deeper, with a particular focus on Flushed Away, the worst financial failure of the bunch, and try to figure out what went wrong.

    one of the things interesting things about flushed away is the representation of British culture. I think in an era of film where viewers were used to seeing films through an American cultural lens, flushed away is a stark difference to that.

      this movie was my first exposure to British culture. as a kid who always watched American cartoons, i grew up being able to speak English better than my peers. But i remembered when i watched Flushed Away, i can understand the dialogue but i always thought it felt different (in a good way) due to the British accents and the terms they use being different from American terms

    To give you an insight of how good the jokes are: my history professor told our class to find the best French joke to tell in class, and one kid went up to him and explained what Flushed Away is so he could tell him about the scene where Le Frog orders the frogs to attack and they all surrender. A dated and somewhat inaccurate joke but it still shows how this movie is viewed as having a great sense of humor by those who have seen it.

    I think a contributing factor is just that this takes place in a sewer. It's gross, they literally sail through human waste. Well, not sail, but you get my point. Not to mention the slugs. I enjoy a lot of Aardman's films, but not this one. It just seems gross to me.

    • @no1ofconsequence936
      @no1ofconsequence936 Před 2 lety +3

      @@Mariathinking , well, it's not gross for the majority. Sure, you have a swamp, and mud, and farts, but you also have fields of sunflowers, lovely forests, a volcano, and open fields. It's not all gross, and even the swamp has some nice parts. As iconic as the swamp is, it isn't in the whole film, not remotely. Whereas here, it's mostly a sewer. I don't know. I just know I enjoy Shrek's humor and story more as well.

For Awaytale, not Flushed Away. My favorite characters are Roddy, Rita, Spike and Whitey. Le Toad is a good villain, and Le Frog is a really good side villain! Me and my family quote Flushed Away all the time! Our favorite quote is "You got your mother's hands." The soundtrack is AMAZING. My favorite scene is where Roddy and Rita escape the Fridge! In terms of box office intake, Flushed Away didn't make that much less than Chicken Run or Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but the problem was that the budget was five times that of Curse of the Were-Rabbit, which was considered a success. British humour doesn't travel well in America because they're not as accustomed to British films as Brits are to their movies. For example, Hot Fuzz was a MASSIVE hit in the UK. It did have some success in in America, but not by American blockbuster standards. Although Harry Potter and James Bond have been rare exceptions to the rule.
    Chicken Run was a big deal because it benefitted from the fact it was the first full length feature by the makers of Wallace and Gromit, which had a large cult following at that point, so COTWR was of course going to do well in Britain. But Flushed Away didn't have any of that familiarity, so it was always going to be a risk. Apparently it was CGI because of all the water involved, which cost a lot more than stop motion. So, simply put, giving a budget of $149 million to a British animation kinda doomed it from the start.

    I freaking loved watching Aardman as kid. I still watch them to this day. I really find it disappointing that Aardman despite having one of the biggest animation studios by their side. Couldn’t reach as high they should have. Wallace and Gromit and Flushed Away had DreamWorks’s name attached. The studio that brought us Shrek. Surely people would have wanted to see something from the masterminds behind Shrek. But they didn’t. And that really upsetting because in my opinion DreamWorks and Aardman are the best animation studios. Yeah, I consider them to be better than Disney and Pixar.

The comedy was very funny from the adult humor to comical slapstick. I like the characters aside from the slugs, the voice acting was very good from Hugh Jackman to Bill Nighy to Ian McKellan. I know I joked the Oogway picking Po video could be summerised as "Tldr: Racism" but genuinely I think the reason Aardman's dreamworks movies go so forgotten is "TLDR: Racism" as its a british studio making movies for british people- Dreamworks wanted things for American audiances whereas Aardman wanted to continue doing their own stuff

    My guess the reason of using cgi and that stop motion style is that Flushed Away was animated by both Dreamworks and Aardman unlike Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit curse of the were rabbit were those films were animated by Aardman and was distributed by Dreamworks

    I rewatched this film about a year ago and honestly-- ehh. Yea it's okay, but the movie just has this uncomfortable vibe imo and a huge factor is probably cause it's in a sewer. I also don't like the art or animation style or that much. It's okay and I'd rewatch it again, but it's just- irrelevant I guess. I don't know what I would discuss about it with other people and that makes it so different from f.e. spirit or el dorado
