    This was the line that the author of Attack on Titan Isayama left us with last year in 2021 when the story concluded. It’s me King Bullet and today we are gonna be discussing the likelihood of an anime original ending for attack on titan. I’ll call this theory the attack on titan alternative or for short AOTA

    At the beginning Eren hears “see you later Eren”
    and Mikasa wakes Eren up
    At the end Mikasa kills Eren and says “see you later Eren”

    I mean now that I think about it, the Manga's Ending does kinda give off "The Bad Ending" Vibes. I was content with it, but if it was always planned to be the alternative ending then I'll be absolutely dumbfounded at the level of planning by Isayama.

    • @sganarellelevalet7479
      @sganarellelevalet7479 Před 2 lety +62

      I don't think the canon ending is so much a "Bad ending", it's a realistic one, Eren had to die, even the protagonist can't get away with genocide.
      Thoses still alive at the end got to live their lives, yes, Paradis was destroyed (most likely because of the Yeagerists and their successors politics), but the final panel is actually hopefull ( I think).
      The kid about to come in contact with the source of all life is nothing like Ymir, who was terrified and wished an indestructible body, maybe this time something truly usefull to humanity will be created and not titans ?

    • @xetachron
      @xetachron Před 2 lety +41

      @@sganarellelevalet7479 you're right, "Bad ending" isn't a good description. More like the "middle ending" similar to the main endings of cave story or Undertale. I don't think the manga ending is even close to bad, but it's Missing the same flair I came to expect from Isayama. Like just a few things that don't make sense from a man of his talents. Big one being how historia's child seems to be a big deal until it just kinda isn't, the reveal of Eren killing his mother being hardly a single page, and things like the Eldian child Titan inheritance never really being used at any point in the story. Idk I might be nitpicking. The current ending is good but it could have been so much better is basically what I'm getting at.

    • @novakaizr
      @novakaizr Před 2 lety +16

      @@xetachron I simply don't see what a better alternative could be. The only thing I can even imagine is Eren succeeding in wiping out everyone, probably including his friends, which would obviously be much darker than the ending we got. With Historia's child I can understand why some people were disappointed, but I think that is the beauty of it. There is a theme in the story about keeping the children out of the forest, which is why it makes sense that this child isn't special, it isn't born for some higher purpose, it is just a child. The reveal of Eren killing his mother was in my opinion not really necessary, but it shows his determination, his tragic story and the idea that he is trapped by his own future. Eren is obsessed with freedom and yet he was forced to kill his mom to avoid a time paradox. The inheritance thing is in my opinion just a plot device. It is simply a reason to not kill the titan characters, as well as an explaination of why none of the 9 titans have been lost

      @@sganarellelevalet7479 you seem to misinterpet why many people (including me) hate the ending, its not because eren dies, heck it made me sad that he died but i didnt hate the ending because of that, what made me angry is the stupid way he concluded the rumbling. he either should have destroyed 100% of the rest of the world, or should not have killed anyone (getting stopped before he reached marley). because what happened now, is that basically the whole story had no purpose, or what did eren and the other characters achieve? nothing! everything that happened, was for nothing because paradise got destroyed and the cyrcle of hatred continued. Now the story was just a glimps of one, of the revisions of the never ending cyrcle of hatred which at the end resulted in paradise destruction. it just makes me feel what was even the point of me reading this if nothing changed at the end. imagine it like this: you drive on a road (the story before the mabga starts) and now take a turn to the right instead of going straight(the whole story we viewed with eren) and at the end you arive at the same road where you left at the beginning and arrived at the same destination which you would have met even if you didnt take the turn.

    My thoughts are the only way we’re getting an aoe is if Isayama planned to give the manga a different ending to the anime from the very beginning. He wouldn’t do it over negative reception or unpopularity. Either 1) Isayama gave out a fake ending to manga readers so both manga and anime viewers watch the true ending for the first time without getting spoiled, which is insane or 2) they add to the ending without changing the overall message, adding details or filling unanswered questions. Both outcomes give me high hopes, as long as they don’t just leave it as it is, as I was actually fine with the zoomed-out theme but upset with the smaller details.

The idea around Marley and SS4 part 1 is that Titans are getting out of time, Peace can't be kept forever, even if Titans still exist in the future, the founding would be useless against bomber jets because while blimps are easy targets for Beast's rock throws, what could he do against nukes or extremely fast jets

    I am surely convinced that there will be an aoe. Here are my main three reasons for believing so: one, of course, the most obvious, the beginning of the anime doesn’t start off with “see you later, Eren”, but rather a strange dream. The second reason, episode 5, that weird chubby royal dude was never shown in the manga, or put into simpler terms, never existed in the manga. Finally, in episode 81 the flashback with Eren and Mikasa (the one where he asks Mikasa about her feelings for him) isn’t even there, meaning it is probably going to come up later and that whole scene is going to play out differently. Hoping strong for the aoe! If it doesn’t happen, I am still fine with the original ending. It would just be a better conclusion to the story to have something such as Attack on Requiem.
    Edit: There is two more things I have to say - in the opening, toward the end, during the scene where Eren is screaming, you can see titan steam coming from his neck - almost as if he emerged from the Warhammer titan and regrew his head? Second, during the scene where Eren transforms into the founding Titan in episode 80, you can clearly see that he is transforming from the bottom up, as the bones are larger at the bottom and smaller at the top, opposed to the manga which is the complete opposite, having larger bones at the top and smaller bones at the bottom. Hope my friends... Hope!!!

    Mikasa being associated with a butterfly could also be a reference to the Butterfly effect, where one tiny change in the past can affect a much bigger thing in the future. A.k.a. Mikasa having a different answer for Erens question changing the fate of the entire world.

      Dude. I read that they tell us that the anime will have a different ending since the very first scene with eren lying on the free. The dream where he sees his mom being eaten and the house of the Tybur Family. Why would they show that so early when it took like four or five years for the manga to actually show that scene of Tybur. Is because Isayama suggested to include that on Anime, maybe it could be the first cue that the Anime is a different timeline or universe on its own. Now, look at the OVAS, that's is the other huge hint, the OVA where Mikasa can't save Eren no matter what universe she is, the one where the titans exists or attack the wall and the one where they do. OVA stands for Original Video Animation, and it makes sense, the butterfly thing is obviously a reference to the butterfly effect where a single event can completely alter the results of a timeline. So my theory is that the anime is basically many of the timelines Mikasa saw and even Eren saw through the memories.
      The last hint I found was the fight between Eren and Annie at the very end, he basically goes berserk with rage( in manga that doesn't happen he has control of the titan), he says that he will destroy the whole world ( the moment he went berserk it was actually eren from the future saying that to himself) , that could be a foreshadow that he will complete the rumbling sucessfully proving that the anime will have a different ending.

    While I hope this is true, I have my doubts. That other japanese game story sort of already fits with the 139 chapters we were given. The alternate timeline where Eren and Mikasa run away together, with Eren succumbing to the curse of Ymir seems to lead the to the time loop. At some point when Eren unlocks his future memories using the Attack Titan, he fully realizes that he looped when he was under the tree in chapter 1. This is why he shows Mikasa these memories so she knows that it has to be this way. He achieves his goal of saving Paradis from the world, saving his friends by sacrificing himself, and ending the Ymir titan cycle as well as the time loop. I feel like this almost works, but there were far too few sacrifices made in the end compared to any other part of the story, and it's way too similar to Code Geass. And not done nearly as well as Code Geass to make it worse. There are some things that do point to your theory, specifically in the added manga panels in 139. This either was genius work of Isayama or he's just doubling down on a bad ending, probably the latter unfortunately. Even worse than the original ending, Eren's only real accomplishment is saving his friends and Paradis in the near future. Paradis in the future is completely destroyed, and his grave site seems to have propagated the origin of the founding titan again. So his home is eventually destroyed, and a new titan cycle is probably going to start. I guess it's still better than the alternate timeline in the short term, but the extra panel details just leave you with dissatisfaction, making me wonder if it was really a necessary addition? That's the one similarity I see for an unfinished story like muv luv alternative. Now if Eren is still connected to the origin of the titans and can receive these far in the future memories, may be a far-fetched idea. Like I said earlier, the ending is quite frustrating as it almost does a good job. I'm not one of those fans who wanted to see Eren destroy everyone in his path including his friends, as that's pretty inconsistent with his character, especially looking at some of the flashback scenes that took place during the time skip before the Declaration of War. It was pretty obvious Eren was putting up an act, and he makes it clear before he starts his solo mission that saving his friends is his true goal. I just wish it wasn't dragged out with like tons of plot armored characters not dying, minus Zeke. If the entire alliance, even the marleyans, were safe from the get-go, the entire final battle is pointless, making it bad storytelling. An evil Eren ending still could've been executed better than the one we got , but the last few arcs would need major changes in the foreshadowing and in Eren's development. As it stands now it is pretty clear he was merely pushing his friends away, never planning on putting the main crew in harms way. If Eren had to kill all his friends in another time loop, there would have to be a pretty damn good reason for it.

I believe Isayama wanted to pack the visuals of this ending theme with as many references that could be considered 'anime spoilers' that catered to the manga readers at the time who were caught up with the story.

That he was doing the technique of the Warhammer titan while regenerating in Paradis. When Zeke dies, the rumbling would stop, and inmediatly Historia son was born and the power of the beast titan would go to Historia's son (Isayama never used the "when a Titan shifter dies, the power goes to the next Eldian born" card). By this time Eren would have already regenerated, he would walk to Historia son (that we also thought was Eren's son), touch him and the rumbling would continue and everyone die and Eren was successful.

    Personally I do not like the idea of alternate timelines all the time in certain series as the concept can easily be abused for narrative purposes especially if it is a cosmology with infinite timelines or realities which causes a endless amount of hinted chaos and a infinite amount of bad calamities to happen in the background.
    If the author truly goes this route I would prefer he does not abuse the concept in such a way that leads to that amount of meaninglessness where choices do not matter that many series that delve into multiverses do they go crazy and overboard.
    When you are dealing with a multiverse you have to be really careful how you make the cosmology less you practically make a eternal chaotic wide world. It is best to tread carefully in these grounds depending on your mindset and intentions within the verse.
    I know many verses that did that such as Magi and it practically ruined the experience for me and was quite annoying.

    The anime could be the timeline were Paradis prospers for years to come at the expense of humanity.
    Maybe the kid at end of 139 approaching the founding tree falls in and receives the founding. This could possibly lead to him tapping into Eren’s memories of saving his friends and Paradis. I'm convinced by the VAs being cagey about it. People are attached to the "deterministic" part of all of this but determinism also means alternate universes HAVE to exist, because SOMETHING had to start the loop that let Eren motivate Grisha in that moment. Perhaps Eren from another timeline to start that time loop.
    It's like in terminator, a man is sent back from the future to protect the mother of a leader of a human resistance against machines from a machine sent to kill her so that their leader would not exist, he impregnates the mother and their son turns out to be the leader of that resistance. How did this happen? That's a paradox. Well, someone had to have sent him back to begin with with a different goal. Or maybe the resistance leader was born to someone else, and was a different person in the original timeline.
    What I'm saying is, time loop paradoxes can't just HAPPEN logically, that would be a bonafide plot hole, something has to start these things.

      THANK YOU OH MY GOD. Everyone is absolutely convinced the “Eren influencing the past” plot twist is one of the best in fiction but as of today, it still doesn’t make sense. Why was Eren trying to make events that have ALREADY happened take place? There has to be a reason and hopefully the anime ending can shed some light on that.

  • @Jaegulhi

    Not sure if this debunks this at all but anime Eren already knows that he will die in the end. It's something that he saw when he touched Historia's hand, it's why he's so depressed afterwards. Killing the rest of the world likely wouldn't make him so upset just based on the nature of the character. Eren Kruger also sort of implied that Mikasa and Armin would be safe, but I supposed that isn't exactly concrete since it was more of a wish/hope. About the ops/eds implying that Eren might still live; I think those can still be true given the manga ending we got. After all, Ymir lived in the paths long after she died so who's to say that Eren doesn't? Sure the others weren't there, but Eren wasn't effected by the vow like them so I don't see why he wouldn't be able to chill with Hallu-chan for all eternity. Another thing, regardless or anime or manga, the overall tone of the story hasn't been very hopeful so I imagine that an alternate one would still be sad
