  • This will crack or drill thru? All my preparation and modifications will be for nothing if this 125 gallon tank shatters.

    I first drill ¼" pilot holes at the hole centers, followed by the use of a diamond hole saw with a ¼" center guide. I cut each hole halfway through the glass then flip the workpiece over and drill into the center from the other side. This causes the hole to cleanly break through in the center, eliminating the ragged edge sometimes created on the back side when drilling in only one direction.

    Use a circular saw to cut a few straight lines 1/4 Inch deep in the wood where the wood contacts the glass, that will help the water to get in the area you try to cut. Clamp the piece of wood down so it won’t move while the drill is turning..use both hands to hold the hand drill.

    Good idea wooden template to support cutter .

    If you need to test if it's heat tempered, use poalrising filter (or polaroid sunglasses). You will see the pattern of the colloing nozzle positions if it was heat tempered.

    that can't be tempered glass , as tempered glass can not be cut or drilled , it will be into pieces if you force it .(WEIHAO GLASS)

    Dude!!! What you should be nervous about was using a damn corded electric drill in water! Are you out of your mind??? Hell I was nervous watching you. Lol

    In all fairness you can drill a hole in tempered glass, you just have to do it prior to tempering it.

      Stupidity is you are just that! It's not tempered before tempering

    BTW most power tools are what is called "double insulated" to prevent electrical shock and I personally have never had problems in wet environments...I always did wear good boots and typically leather gloves is all ... plus I always protected and maintained my power cords and cordcaps (aka plugs) and but IF one is still worried about it, then plug cord into gfic outlet found in all kitchen, patio, bathroom, laundry rooms etc of any code built dwelling built in the last 20 years or more (in the USA at least) ...that assumes the devices have been maintained over the years and not defeated...you can buy a tester that replicates a ground fault and trips the device if it good. The other thing for the ultra paranoid is to simply use a cordless drill which are much lower voltage and DC rather than the AC so are intrinsically very safe for any healthy person (not certain that even that might not cause problem for someone with a pacemaker or whatever) ...And where do I get my information? From being an electrician for like 40+ years...

      excellent advice.and absolutely correct about using cordless.would if been by far the safest.

    Excellent test..... but tank glass is made heavy to withstand the pressure.... because it is not tempered I,m afraid. Tempered glass IS possible to be drilled ( yes I,ve done it ) but it is extremely difficult .... and never with a huge vibrating holesaw such as that . BUT drilling a hole that size in regular glass is nothing to sneeze at ! Good job.

      Not true. Just a score with a diamond tip will already shatter the glass.

      Tempered glass cannot be drilled, you have never drilled through tempered glass even if you thought you did.

  • @MarcFresko
    @MarcFresko Před 7 lety +2

    Of course, if you'd drilled the glass before assmbling the tank, you would have risked less!

      @johndzierzynski7162 Před 7 lety

      Marc Fresko If you absolutely must have tempered glass with a hole in it, the hole or any other shaping must be done before thetempering process. You cannot cut ordrill heat tempered glass. Not waterjet, not laser, not hot needle, not under water. ... There is no secret formula for cutting or drilling tempered glass.May 6, 2016

    You would benefit from using some other kind of speed control. If you put a zip tie on the trigger, maybe a variac would do the job. More research might get you the right answer. The shaking of that hand drill is going to cause problems.

    I think I would either clamp the wood to the glass, sandwiched between wood, OR if that is a bad idea at least securely tape or even adhere the glass to the wood...seems pretty sketch just holding it by hand? Also would high drill speed and pulsed pressure work better maybe??

    • @RobertosLife
      @RobertosLife  Před 8 lety

      no need for all that.the bottom was not flat.there was a 1/2 inch lip all around the bottom. the wood was cut to fit snug. man now I'm a pro!!! i don't even use a guide i 90 degree the bit and when i get a bite i drop it progressively until it's vertical. and cordless drills suck!!! if you just keep the plug out of water your golden.
