    What great timing. I am making a solid oak jewellers bench for tinkering and, having never seen a jewellers bench in the flesh, was struggling with some design considerations. This video helped a lot thanks.

    Hi Andrew,
    I've just watched your video after I put my Durston Bench up. All your comments about the weight of the bench are correct.
    In order to get it into my workshop I had to dismantle the bench further. I was then able to carry the bench single handed up a spiral staircase. To dismantle you need to take the drawer section off first; four screw in the side and four at the top. It is then possible to remove the other box section by removing the screws holding it to the bench top. The order is important as dowels are used to locate some parts. Once all the bits are in situ it can then be reconstructed.
    My version came with a foot rest. I would advise others to leave this out as it just isn't comfortable for me (176cm) as there is insufficient knee room.
    I'm tempted to cut out an arch on the bottom of the carcass to match the arch in the lemel tray. This is made of MDF and I can't see that it will compromise the structure but it will improve kneee room. The shelf above the lemel tray is also MDF. The use of MDF in these visible areas is a shame as they detract from the overall finish of the bench.
    I think I'll enjoy the bench more once it gets a few scratches and scuff marks as it's too pristine at the moment.

    @Andrew Berry, would you say this is one of the better benches/worth the price? I am looking to upgrade to a proper working area and trying to decide if I should get one of the more economic ‘student’ benches, or just invest more now to avoid having to upgrade again when I outgrow a cheaper option.

    Thanks Andrew, I'm a beginner and am looking for a jewellers bench, but they seem to go from £99 then to £450. I don't want to waste money by buying something too cheap, but I'm not sure if I need something to this extent. Are you able to advise please? Many thanks

    I am with Team Skovhugger, spend the money on materials
    . The only things I like about this bench is the hard wood top, & the many drawers. The catch tray at the bottom is ok, never needed mine to have the curved front. The tray has the curved front but the bottom plate it sits on does not, & why is it even there at all? Two rails to sit on is all that is needed. The soldering should be done on top of the bench, not inside it. Seems like there is wasted space between the drawers & the open section. You can see it when they flip it over. I would also like to see more drawers that go almost down to the floor. I have always had a bench pin fit with a press into the bench, maybe with a shim, but never with screws. The piece the pin & mandrel slot into looks rather thin & flimsy for me.I have been a goldsmith for the last 20 years, with a more basic bench than this with upgrades as I went. I am going to be making a new bench for myself looking for ways to make a better bench than what I have now. I do like the size & shape of the cut out in the top & I think doing the same to the tray would be nice. Other than that I would redesign the whole thing.

    I'm building a bench for my daughter..so I don't have a jeweler's understanding about bench use.
    - What are the diameters of the holes for use with the mandrel?

    • @seagraham8813
      @seagraham8813 Před 5 lety +6

      In all my years of working I've never used a mandrel hole on a bench. Personally I can't see the use of one being very good for the integrity of your work station. In fact there seems to be a lot of added "extras" that are there just to justify the price of this thing. A heavy solid top and good legs to start your daughter on her way should be good enough. As her skills evolve, she will figure out as to what she needs to complement her work style. As for the whole catch tray set-up, personally I hate them. A piece of heavy leather is, in my opinion a way better option. She is going to find out jewellery workshops all come with a gremlin that likes nothing more than to move whatever you have dropped to the furthest point from where you definitly heard it hit the floor or a solid catch tray. If something falls when I'm working, it stops dead and rolls to the centre of my skin. Don't think you really need all that drawer space either. They are just going to accumulate junk that you don't need and will probably never use. Soldering station, not needed. Better to do that at eye level. Pull out for drawing and designing, not needed. You end up hunched over to use it and your lower back and shoulders won't thank you in the long run

    🤔 I think not ...
    Why use so much monny on a work bench that dont fit you any way and you have to build different from the start ...
    I would rather use the monny and buy good qualety materials and put a good work bench together that fitsvme just super ...
