Ibn Hajar Al Askalani was an ash'ari, Imam an Nawawi was an ash'ari, the Hanbalis have always considered the ash'ari ma'turidi as part of ahlus Sunnah considering they were the highest in rank and knowledge. Not trying to compare but aside from ibn Taymiyya (hafizaallah) who else had knowledge equivalent to that if sheikh al islam level. There are a few but the majority of the Ummah was ash'ari ma'turidi. Again these aqeedah groups are simply made out of a necessity to defend Islam. For example imam Bukhari gave an interpretation of the Surah al-Qasas verse 88 (Everything will perish except his face) Imam Bukhari in sahih Al Bukhari states that this means "his Kingdom" So what this group of salafis likes to do is claim tafweed has 2 types and likes to confuse the audience of the 2 types and comparing it to the ta'weel that the ash'aris ma'turidis do. One more for you guys. Ibn Taymiyya, Majmu’at al-fatawa 2:428 He claims that the Quranic verse 28:88 refers to direction (Jiha).

All knowledge came to the Prophetﷺ by revelation. The Prophetﷺ recited the Qur'an as Jibreel recited to him, and then explained to people the Qur'an as Allahﷻ explained it to him. 1. Qur'an75:18-19 فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ So when We have recited it [through Jibreel], then follow its recitation. Then upon Us is *its clarification* ( *Both quran and its explanation are part of the revelation* otherwise we wouldn't be able to establish salah prayer, zakkah etc. ) 2. Qur'an16:44 بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَٱلزُّبُرِۗ وَأَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكَ ٱلذِّكْرَ لِتُبَيِّنَ لِلنَّاسِ مَا نُزِّلَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ With clear proofs and written ordinances. And We revealed to you the message that you may *make* *clear* to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought. ( *After it was made clear to him The Prophetﷺ had to explain* in detail to his companions what has been mentioned in brief in the Qur'an ) 3. *The Prophetﷺ used to explain the verses* to his companions(may Allah be pleased with them). Narrated `Abdullah: When the Verse - *Those who believe and mix not their belief with wrong.* was revealed, the Muslims felt it very hard on them and said, "O Allah's Messengerﷺ! Who amongst us does not do wrong to himself ?" He replied, "The Verse does not mean this. But that (wrong) means to associate others in worship to Allah. Don't you listen to what Luqman said to his son when he was advising him, *O my son! Join not others in worship with Allah. He was kindhearted and merciful, so he said, "Return to your families and teach them (religious knowledge) and order them (to do good deeds) and *offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers* , and when the stated time for the prayer becomes due, then one of you should pronounce its call(i.e. the Adhan), and the eldest of you should lead you in prayer. (Bukhari6008 & Sahih Muslim 674) 4. *The Qur'an & the Sunnah(prophet's sayings, actions)* are preserved through isnad-chain of narration. The same trustworthy narrators of the Qur'an, transmitted the prophet's sayings and actions(the explanation of the Qur'an), therefore there is no reason to reject the Sunnah. This verse in surah Al-Hijr15:9 إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ *Indeed, it is We who sent down the Reminder and indeed, We will be its guardian.* (means that Allahﷻ guards the Qur'an and its explanation, otherwise it has no practical value)
