      Yeah... no. It really doesn't.
      This 700g model represents a full-sized aircraft weighing just 240kg.
      You can't compare a model with an unknown airfoil profile that's at least 20x lighter than it should be, with a full-sized aircraft.

      @sergarlantyrell7847 the horten 229 flew with jet engines for some time in its first and only test flight then it's engine failed during a landing and the plane crashed killing the pilot. The older prop and glider versions flew normal without needing an advanced fly by wire system (that wouldn't exist for the next decades anyway)

    Amazing indoor aircraft. I understand aerodynamics and these big models defy the norm. I’ve flown models for over 50 years of all types and I’ve read that there are helium sacks internally that offsets the wing loading. Either way they are great to watch. 👍

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 Před 5 lety

      Your wing loading would be the same... Now you replaced lift, with lift... Literally same upwards force, in the same direction, just think about it.
      This model is also incredibly heavy, I bet it was made with regular foam board (you should check out "Penny plane" rubber band models, those things weigh 1 penny, and have decent sized wings with 10 inch props and almost float in the air, hence some people get 1 hour flight times from a rubber band).
      Also helium in the wings is probably not worth it, have you had a deflated helium balloon before? The reason they don't float anymore is because the volume per area (basically material weight), is no longer good enough for the overall package to be lighter than air. If you look at these wings, what do they have? Lots of area, and barely any volume... It wouldn't help you, it could only hurt. This only makes sense for thick wings, and its only a couple grams of lift anyways, just spend more time trimming down your structure if you want improved results. Also you should be using Hydrogen if you want real lift, helium is far more heavy (yeah hydrogen is explosive, but you get so little out of helium...)

    • @bogomir67
      @bogomir67 Před 5 lety +1

      the Horten designs are actually inherently stable - they came from gliders in the 1920s. Both Northrop and Lippisch designs are much more unstable, which would make for a better fighter.

    @Luddite-vd2ts Před 8 měsíci

    That's an amazing bit of flying given that there are no vertical tail surfaces on this design.
    I have seen it said, elsewhere, that attempts to build flying wing designs post-WW2, were unsuccessful due to issues with control: the need for constant corrections that were beyond the capabilities of the average human pilots. That pure flying wing designs only became successful with computer inputs to the control surfaces.
    I wonder, therefore, how that RC pilot manages to control his model and how stable it is? That flight is a testament to his skill and also to the Horten brothers' design skills from almost a century ago.
